Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

I hadn’t either but apparently some have gotten much higher!

He was talking 100% contested disposals.

Not disposal efficiency.

Oh whoops misread it.

Oh well to make my post a somewhat valid contribution I checked them all and he beat out all of them, most comfortably. Lings game comes closest with 14.

Cunnington has the most with 32 contested possessions for 38 disposals (84%)

No idea who has the most at 100%. I doubt it's much higher than Reid's 15 and probably has to be a key position player.

I would be pumping his confidence up and telling him he is going well and keep getting games into him. Try and get him leading to easier scoring zones. He just needs to get confidence up
Put a long term contract in front of him. This kid is future!

Delisting him last year should never have been a discussion. Even if he didn't break out this year, who would you rather have as our immediate forward depth: Reid or McLean? Reid is just a better player.

Re-sign him again, even if he just stays on year-by-year now.

On ruck ability Naismith

On knee durability Nank

9 things we learnt has a Reid mention:

6. Sam Reid is playing himself into another contract

A combination of injuries and inconsistent form have seen Sam Reid in and out of John Longmire's best 22 over the past three seasons. However, the Swans veteran continued a purple patch against the Giants on Saturday to illustrate why he's now an integral member of a team pushing for a top four spot. Playing as a key forward alongside Lance Franklin, Reid kicked three goals from 18 disposals in the easy win, but it was his back-up ruck work to Tom Hickey that was just as eye-catching, with his spring in the centre leading directly to a number of Sydney clearances. Reid had four clearances and seven score involvements of his own to highlight his impact. The 30-year-old has now played nine straight games and doesn't look like giving up his position any time soon. Currently on a one-year contract, he looks a certainty to go around in 2023 and who knows how much longer. – Michael Whiting

at some point in his most recent medical travails, reid must have been given the steve austin treatment
"we have the technology, we can rebuild him"
he's playing like a bionic man ... it is quite an astonishing career resurrection ...
surely, this time 10-12 months ago he was finished, just about everyone on this board would've thought so at some point
now he's dominating as a marking forward, a more than capable back-up ruck, moving up and down the field like he was doing a decade ago, he's become a tackling machine ... and he's even kicking goals (mostly)
the swans giving him a contract this season might even qualify him as recruit of the year

The Bionic Sam

if someone with more technical ability than me (my tech knowhow extends to flicking a lighter) could find the old Bionic Man television intro and get reid emerging from that tricky tricky surgery ... well, i'd certainly be impressed

I don't recall being that positive in here

well only took a decade to come good
You've got it all wrong, Kingy.

This is where you claim you're one of his earliest and most loyal supporters and shit on everyone else for doubting him, and thereby, yourself.

ha ha I was very early on the train

I just jumped off the train set it on fire, burnt down the station and pissed on the ashes.

The train derailed but has been rebuilt as light rail.

Credit to Reid he’s playing the way many of us had hoped he would for the last decade.

I forget where it was said, but someone mentioned that part of Reid's form, and injury run, was the fact that that he had to train harder than he has ever had to to get into the team.
McLean, McDonald, and Amartey aren't playing as well as Reid, but they are also part of the reason why Reid is playing so well. Spot competition is soooo important.

Worth remembering that he was in equally as impressive form early last season as well, before he got injured (and then, as we've always known with Reid, he was awful on return from injury.) So it's more than just one flukey season. Something has turned for him. I don't know what it is and maybe it's none of our business, as long as he keeps doing what he's doing.

Only part of the story but I think the delivery into the forward line suits him better. I have watched Sam since 2012 and he has always been better with a flatter delivery that he can jump at, rather than one that falls on his head. Our delivery is more often like that this season so I imagine he's taking more marks (too lazy to look it up).
His pressure, tackling and below the knees remains a strong point.
I think Raper's team may have worked a little magic. Sam has always had good ruck skills but he's getting up higher than I can ever recall. He beat Preuss a few times. Maybe his hammies are in best ever shape?
Whatever, I may have seen him play as well, but I don't recall seeing him play better. Hope he stays healthy!

2023 contract for Reid?

Without doubt right now.

Honestly wouldn't surprise me if another team offered him a multi year contract in his current form.

There are quite a few teams that would really value the way he's currently playing. Wife is a Sydney girl (I think) and he has a young family so it would have to be a really great offer for him to relocate I'd think.
