Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

He's quality when fit.

If he gets injured again we can pickup a pre season selection or a MSD. I think we'd be silly not to keep him at this stage

Iirc, he has not made the Top 10 of our BnF. Sure when fit he has had some good games, but has had many poor ones.

I think people remember but overrate his better 2022 performances. I will neither forgive nor forget the GF.

He provides more than the majority of state based players. We can draft a speculative tall but we have a couple of those already (MacAndrew, Edwards, Buller)

Unless there is someone we feel can push for selection I'm not sure what better option there is?

let's be honest he was finally pretty handy in 2022

But the careers been mainly ordinary

made a lot of money for kicking a long goal in a grand final

let us down more often than not

Most overrated swan on this board by a long time

He is unlikely to get on the park. When he has found form in the past it has been after an extended run.

Would rather we go for a goal kicking small or medium forward.

He’s won more flags with us than Buddy, Heeney, Papley, Mills and Rampe combined.

Don’t think he’s overrated - just frustratingly fragile.

Personally, I hope he goes round again in 2024. We can afford to take the risk.

It was the lack of Reid that cost us the GF and very nearly the PF v. Pies. Reid was central to us playing as serious GF contenders. As soon as he went down in the PF we collapsed and damn near lost it.

As I've said before, I don't blame Horse for taking such a big risk on Sam's fitness. It was a case of lose badly without Reid or take the risk that he miraculously stays fit and we have half a chance. I say half a chance because even at our very best with Reid we were no match for such an incredibly experienced Geelong side who got it all coming together right at the pointy end of the season. Chris Scott took a huge risk in riding that bunch of golden oldies to the big dance, the most finals experience of any GF side ever. Geelong's fitness staff and a huge sacrifice to Lady Luck somehow kept them from falling apart. Half of them were "managed" throughout the season but they juggled that very well too, keeping enough power on the field to take top spot.

If we'd had the personnel to manage Buddy in 2023, as we'd planned to do, I believe he'd have got through in reasonable shape. But we had a shed load of injuries to cover and had no choice but to run him into the ground. But that's another story.

If we can manage Reid for 2024 it will give us a ton of extra flexibility for very little outlay Who else can play ruck, forward or defence as well as he can. Who else can fill any number of key positions and fill them so well. He adds a booming goal kick from outside 50m, a load of tackling pressure and he provides a strong contested marking option out of defence. It's not so hard to replace smalls and mediums, but key position players are much harder. For a small cost we'll have a "break glass in emergency" spare key position player who can not only hold but dominate a number of key positions.

One performance on 2022 that is impossible to overrate is Reid's whipping of Tim English when he had to take on our no.1 ruck mantle. Reid used all his smarts and ability to fight the ground ball to get on top of a much taller opponent. It wasn't the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog that mattered. Good boy Sam.

McLean is a better ruck, forward and contested mark at this stage of his development. Reid is a spare in defence and not a defender as such.

Buller showed plenty and Will bound ahead with a big pre season. Can also ruck as can Amartey. I expect the Club will also train Up Ladhams as a Fwd and ruck. Logan will lead the fwd line.

All are younger and more likely to make it on the ground.

Tbf so has Mitch Morton and who is picking him over any of those names?

As a natural goal kicking forward including under massive pressure I have Mitch ahead of Wayward

Buller is a VFL player until proven otherwise. Amartey and Ladhams aren't close to Reid's class.

Health is always a concern but last time he was fit he was the most important player in grand final push.

14 years and he remains unreliable.

Just about to write this exact thing, everything went to shit the minute Sam got injured.
There are posters on here that just can't see the forest for the trees when it comes to players like Sam and have a distinct inability to acknowledge what he can and does bring to the team when fit - sadly he's never been fit long enough to be able to bring it consistently.
With the new additions to the list, a fit and firing Sam (big ask I know) is the giant cherry on top.

His problem is and always has been fragility not ability.

Im guessing it depends on draft night.
If we draft 3 players - Reids gone. But if we draft 2 players - Reid stays
Can’t do that unless things have changed.

Initial list lodgement is 31st October as that is when all the contracts are dated to end.

We have 7 days to decide.

We could of course delist him and pick him back up if we wanted, unsure if there is much point?

Well yes but not having a plan B till halfway through the year didn't help either, whilst structurally he was important we saw late in the year McLean startered to do that role which was promising.

I'd still keep reid for a year you are talking the last position on the squad, at worst he offers a mature head for a young key group of talls. Probably offer him a year with a coaching position after.

We have no idea what Sam might or might not have to offer in a coaching role. He seems a fairly quiet sort of guy and has not IIRC ever been in the leadership group. Pretty sure when his time is up that will be it for Sam.

Still think that experience can be useful teaching ur young players. Just wonder whether his durability would have been a factor in why he wasn't in our leadership group.

Yeah I agree, I think if he's extended it will be the very last offering made and it will be his final year. It was great to see McLean's advances this season gone and he was starting to look like Sam's long term replacement - hopefully without the injuries!
