Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

Some encouraging signs from Sam last night. Didn't do much in the first half but he was still active and presenting. Chased, tackled well with Tommy and showed some good hands in a few strong grabs and handing off to teammates (had 3 goal assists).

Second half he got on his bike and started presenting at the ball carrier, 3 tackles, 2 I50s, 3 goal assists, 5 marks. The sort of statistics that have been missing from his game in recent weeks.

His workrate was up, his intent was up and the rewards were there.
Good to see.

He worked himself into the game, he's building slowly and hopefully he'll return to form soon. I'm sure the game helped his confidence levels. Hopefully he puts in a strong performance next week, he played well against the saints last year, so that's promising. I'm sure we'll see the old Reid back soon

The second half shows exactly what impact bringing Walsh into the team did. It allowed Reid to go one on one for the majority of the half and surprise surprise started winning his own ball, taking marks and being effective. Hopefully the bullshit 2 and 3v1's we see against him (like the first half and the past 5 weeks) will slowly stop becoming as commonplace if our other talls stand up.

One only needs to compare Reid to what watts should be doing for his team. He's getting 1 v 1s which means he will kick a bag in the coming weeks if Walsh and LRT keep drawing defenders like in the 2nd half. :thumbsu:

I think having tall bodies in Walsh, LRT and Pyke, and the ability to find space where there is very little inside 50 in TDL, allowed Horse to free Reid up to play CHF. Lately, Reid has been playing almost exclusively at FF and has thus been drawn into physical battles against packs of players he was never going to win. Last night started similarly, with Walsh starting as more a CHF, Reid a FF. As the game went on, Walsh stayed closer to home while Reid started getting up the ground, burning his opponents with his speed, and collecting some ball. He got a couple of kicks around the 50 arc, both of which he missed but made good contact. The first faded wide but was good off the boot, the second was right on target but fell short. Even though he didn't kick them, it wasn't the usual shanks we've been seeing, and I reckon he'd have taken some confidence from them. He then calmly slotted probably the most difficult shot he's had all year.

It's hard to read too much into anybody's game, given how terrible Melbourne were, but he will hopefully take a lot of confidence out of this. Having a couple of big strong lads in Walsh and Pyke that can take a contested grab and stay close to goal will free Reid up to really out-work his opponents up the ground too, which can only help.

Bump.

16 goals in the last 6 games. What's more, he's kicking accurately. Extremely accurately, in fact, with 16.3 over those 6 weeks. He now has 21.12 for the season. It's a gigantic turnaround which IMO deserves more recognition.

Nick Davis: the gift that keeps on sporadically giving.

Huge turn around, could end up with a 40 goal season which would be amazing. Even 30+ would be fantastic considering he's still a kid.

Bright future!

Make that 19.4 over 7 games. He'd probably be the most accurate kick in the competition over that period. He is kicking them beautifully. Even the one he missed tonight was just a normal miss, not one of his really tentative, weak, wonky kicks that he was coming up with earlier in the season.

He's also finding the ball and taking marks, but we all knew he could do that. I admit I have always been a bit worried that his kicking might never come on, kind of like Nick Riewoldt, Richardson, etc, but he seems to have really gotten on top of it.

Well on track for a 40 goal season now and looking superb. Imagine when Rohan returns and he and Jetta are banging them home with Reid? Scary!

His kicking was great last night, his skills around his feet were very good and he clunked marks in packs. But what I liked most was his one on one contested grab against Glass. That's one of the things that he will do more of as he gets stronger but the fact that he can do it now on a premier defender is a great sign.

Looks alot more fluent in his kicking routine now. Hope it will stand up in finals.

Nicky D, you miracle worker!

He looks fit enough to come back.

Reid has got confidence back thats the biggest thing ive noticed, he wants the ball and want to go for goal.
Fantastic

This guy has huge potential and i'm sure he will come good with goals at some point, but he almost lost us the game today. What is up with this guy. Natural footballer, great to watch, but geez, his conversion rate is woeful. What is he doing wrong? How could he improve his return for effort, because god knows he needs to if he is to become the potent forward we all know he could be. How would he combine with Jesse White?

So what, he Reid) had the yips for a spell, that happens to younger players, in fact even the older ones. I was never concerned about his kicking as I always knew it would come good. He just needed time to build confidence and now he has it.

Approaching 50 games, had a serviceable GF (was by no means great or poor). Will 2013 be his break out year?

Possibly, although he's still only 20. We probably shouldn't expect too much from him.

Next year I think 30-40 goals should be the expectation assuming he stays fit. Anything above that is an exceptionally good return from a 21 year old.

I think he is tracking nicely for a 20 year old. Bit up and down, but when he starts fufilling his potential hopefully he develops consistency along with it. A lot more accurate in front of goal this season though.
