Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

Compare Reid to most forwards that are 20/21 years of age and he is going great.

He has improved on last year, Kicked more goals and did all of this whilst playing injured.

I think next year we can expect between 35-40 goals (depending on injury of course) and the year after (2014) we can expect him to push to 50 and beyond.

I would love to see him gain another 5-10 kilos before next season starts... as whilst he athletically out marks his opponents of burns them for pace... he still needs a bit more strength so he doesn't get out muscled in mark contests.

Still prone to the odd shank or too...possibly the way he drops the ball? I hope he keeps working at it during the offseason.

Also agree with adding a few more KGs to his frame

Played with a dodgy knee also cops attention from opposition, has to learn to deal with it of course.

His grand final was quite polished i thought looked threatening, could be the making of him.

This ^^

Have always thought he looked like a bit of a confidence type player (Noticed how if he clanks his first mark the rest of the day he is flying for everything??)

Expecting a very very confident Reid next year.

Reid had some very crucial marks/touches at important stages during the grand final, even though his numbers weren't huge. Notable one were the mark from a kick-in with a couple of minutes to go which helped us clear the defensive 50, and a tackle on Schoenmakers which forced a throw-in near the wing. A perfect example of how, when you're not playing well, you can still do your bit for the team. Didn't have a massive influence on the game, but better than the last #20 to play in a winning grand final for us! ;)

There is a reason he was signed to a 5 year deal....patience ppl.

imo 2013's improvement will be better than 2012's.

Hawkins had arguably his best year in 2011, Riewoldt in 2010 and Taylor Walker this year in 2012. Prior to these seasons, the amount of games they played were:

  • Tom Hawkins (Prior to 2011) - 61
  • Jack Riewoldt (Prior to 2010) - 46
  • Tex Walker (Prior to 2012) - 45
  • Prior to 2013, Reid is sitting on 46 games
Can say that it's largely irrelevant, small sample size, yada yada but to me, it gives some sort of reference point in the optimism for Reid.

This is how many goals these key forwards kicked in their 3rd season of AFL

Sam Reid 31.19 (22 games)
Jack Riewoldt - 32.27 (20 games)
Tom Hawkins - 34.17 (24 games)
Lance Franklin - 73.62 (22 games)
Jonathan Brown 14.14 (19 games)
Travis Cloke 39.39 (25 games)
Taylor Walker 32.13 (13 games)
Josh Kennedy 7.4 (7 games)

So other than Lance Franklin Sam's 3rd year stacks up rather well against the 3rd year of those other key forwards.

This guy has huge potential and i'm sure he will come good with goals at some point, but he almost lost us the game today. What is up with this guy. Natural footballer, great to watch, but geez, his conversion rate is woeful. What is he doing wrong? How could he improve his return for effort, because god knows he needs to if he is to become the potent forward we all know he could be. How would he combine with Jesse White?
Leave him at CHF :) Trade White. :)

Too harsh OP. Probably the best game Reid has played for the club, he presented well and won the contested footy. Obviously his kicking was woeful but remember he's only 19 so he has time on his side to work on his kicking and produce the goods. Travis Cloke is a perfect example, one of the best in the business for a contested mark and presenting but couldn't kick straight to save his own life, that has changed somewhat this year with new techniques. Buddy would've had the Coleman in the bag already if he wasn't so inaccurate. Straight kicking for goal is hard to master. I'm confident Reid's kicking in future won't be a problem like we saw yesterday.
Now if you're talking about the grand final, he was excellent. But then again this post is almost 4 months old, so... are you a wizard?

Not really impressed with his preseason. He's taken the odd epic grab like he always does but he's still barely sighted on the scoreboard.

On the contract and coin that he's on I really hope he can take the next step in 2013 or 2014. As our number one target he needs to show quite a bit more over the next 18 months imo.

He's only 21, there is plenty of time for him yet. Putting natural development aside i think once Tippett joins the fray Reid will benefit immensely.

I was at the game and watched him very closely last night. The Suns defenders did a good job going body on body with Sam. Really cut off his run and space. At one point JPK was shifted forward and I noted Kennedy's efforts trying to shepherd a lead for him. But the defence simply didn't allow it. Reckon Sam is still getting his head around this sort of close marking. Time will be a great teacher.

I also note the number of mid/small forward goals last night enabled by the Suns' focus on Reid. He'll be a good player, Sam. Just needs time.

Will be a good player . May take some time to develop but he's still so young. Still has 10-11 years to get it sorted. Look at tomahawk, was struggling prior to the 2011 finals series. And in a 5-6 week period something clicked and he transformed into one of the premier forwards. Give Sam time I expect the same sort of development from him

He's still a lot like Liam Jones. Except Reid has the advantage of somewhat competent midfield delivery more than 2-3 times a game.

Big men take time so you cop the potential shown by these kids at 22, by the time they are 24 if they continue to develop the "what to do" won't even be a question.

There's no disputing that he is young, as posted by several above, but the players who have comprehensively beaten him for the past 2 weeks have been 21 and 22 (Thompson and Stanley). He has more AFL experience than both of them combined. At the moment he needs to be playing the Nick Riewoldt roving HF role because he is unable to impact with consistency or regularity when given a good 1-on-1 matchup at full forward.

Give Him time, I think his below the knee skills are brilliant for his size, this area is very under rated, he is quick, with sure hands in traffick, the goal he scored on the run in the GF demonstrates that he can mix it up the field, so at this stage more suited to CHF that will restrict opposition blocking his run, making him a double threat
Give him time he will be awesome for us

The game, and our perception of contests, is slanted towards defenders though. A defender only needs to halve a contest for someone to say he has won it. Whereas a forward needs to mark and goal.

Also, would you say that the players who have beaten him have had NO help? a forward's teammates can't help him win a marking contest beyond leading their man away, yet a defender's can.

Completely agree, as the forward has the 2 significant advantages of being the target - ie his teammates are looking to kick the ball to his advantage, and being able to choose when and where to lead. The forward is the decider, the defender can merely try and anticipate or react.
