Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

He played well on the weekend. Better than just OK. Restricted Westie, blocked up any long avenues to goal and got 10 possessions of his own at 100% DE. If he works out then he'd be good value money-wise for an eventual replacement for Richards, particularly as he can also play forward and ruck if needed. We've been missing that flexible tall since LRT retired.

Am I the only one who thinks that he looks quite androgynous?

It's almost as if his physical appearance was being described over the radio to an alien shape shifter.

Noticed in the NAB challenge game v GWS, where Reid played in defence, that they zoned off him when we had the ball in our back 50, essentially inviting our other defenders to use him as our outlet. Presumably the theory was that he would not use the ball as well as some others.

However given the players mainly used in our back 7 last week (Richards, Grundy, Rampe, Smith, Laidler, Shaw and Reid) we don't have great ball users or speed back there.
Worked OK last week, be interesting to see what happens if teams press against us.

Keep him there till 2017?

Nah serious suggestion would be go play back in the reserves and get some form

All he has right now is height but he creates more opportunities for the opposition than he stops

But no doubt horse is encouraged by his development

I don't think the NEAFL is the answer, what form is he going to discover in the NEAFL?

Play forward and kick some goals on state defenders?
He needs to learn how to kick to a team mate over 15 meters and handball from 2 meters, those two skills seemed to let him down badly today.

He's a spud who hasn't even played a good game in 2 seasons. Get rid of him and bring in Tom Mitchell.

The problem is that you get sucked in by his potential. Tall athletic player who can play forward and back and take a strong mark. I think the coaching staffe are like me in thinking"this may be the week".
But sooner or later a line needs to be drawn

Then what is the point of any of our fringe players being in the NEAFL?

Out of curiosity, if at the end of the season we decide to trade Reid (hypothetically), what do you think he'd be worth?

Depends who wants him. Prior to last year, would've said late first round or early second to a Bulldogs like side. Now, late second or early 3rd

Similar to Liam Jones, Josh Bruce etc as young KPPs in their 20s with similar production in Jones' case, and Bruce with more talent but less experience and demonstrated production.

He is a good mark, if they build a forward line around him, could be good. I have faith in him still

No he was a good mark for a bit

Averages less marks per game in 2015 than players like Brad Hill, Harry Cunningham, Adam Schnieder, Jessie hogan, Jarred waite et al

It has been 3 games :p But yeah. Seems super down in confidence. I really think he would do some time in the reserves just so he can start to think he is doing a good job.
