Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

I hope, and I think he's turned a corner.

Won't expect that every week , but I'd expect him to work his way towards putting that sort of performance in on a consistent basis.

More evidence to suggest he will struggle

He was good defensively last night too, threw his weight around a bit and laid a few tackles. Something like one of LRT's games from a few years ago.

Has set a standard now thats needs to be maintained

If last night is his usual output with every few weeks a game like the dockers game it adds a lot to the side

Ditto jetta if he can increase consistency

Injuries aside, he is a handy player. Gutted freo dint get him in 2009. Hes Victorian. Put him up on the trade table, Vic clubs will chas him. Hes af free agent in 2017, he will get offers. He seemed like a good key forward before the tippet and buddy era. Might be a richards replacement.

I like him on the wing thou, we are at our worst when we bomb long to buddy/tippo 2 on 1. with reid on wing i always back him in contested mark 1v1. seemed a better option to stop the 60m give away possession kick.
I agree. He seems to like the wing, and often gets on the end of those panic clearances coming out of our backline. Then fading down back to help out, it's a good mix for us.

Liked how he used his big frame to shepherd through Mitchell's kick on goal. Smart play. Is Reid coming of age ? He's been doing a lot of smart things lately.

Would like to see him as one of the players who atones for the GF this week

Yup if he performed he actually gives them a match up problem

lake will be back to scrag buddy, frawley will go to tippett and gibson intercepting if goodes and or reid dont make the hawks accountable

Hawks have their cavalry arriving just in time for the battle. No excuses from them then.

Is it purely confidence with Reid. When he first came onto the scene he was clunking grabs like they were going out of fashion. He then spent 2 years dropping sitters, a few good games and he has buckets again.

I honestly hope he can go on with it, he has a good motor too

He will be fine just needs to string a lot of games together in the past whenever he has looked good he has done a calf or a shoulder and is out for a month.

Thus loses all momentum.

His 'role' is actually something this year. He is getting heaps better at positioning in the back half and most importantly he is attacking the ball and the contest which he wasn't doing before.

Yep tho to be fair he has been played in every position :p

I LOL'd after the Freo game when Horse said 'that is the role we've been wanting him to play'. Horse was having a lend, that was the first game he played in the middle as a mid/wingman that I can recall.

I'm now thinking that it isn't a confidence thing but more so a role factor. Why? Playing his role now is typically the old 'wing' role'...one side bp to fp doing hthat forward/defensive thing kand he's doing it with great effect! My opinion but really does make some sort of sense. Either way...he's flying!

He really seems to like this role, and is turning up where needed to great effect.

Definitely the role he is playing in the team is to focus less on his goal kicking and more about what he can do all over the ground. Pushing forward is also a benefit of Reidy. Him being that utility player I believe is his best role and suited well for him.

Good on him and for the coaches persisting with him.

I know most people are thrilled with his game v hawks. I thought he dropped plenty of marks. The number of times the commentators said "Reid did well" after dropping marks I lost count of. I dont rate him still.

Sure he dropped some marks but so did most players, Reid second efforts after he makes a error are much improved from the past.
