Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

800K per season, WTF??? I want Reid to stay and like him as a football player but he can go. He is worth nowhere near that.

I guess the reasoning is , u can add 20% to all players salaries come next year...which makes a $650k player this year worth almost $800k next year.

He would fit in well with Richmond.

He is not worth 650K. Good luck to him if he wants that.

From memory we signed him on for around 500k a year over 5 years.

To me he's struggled to deliver on that, in terms of return on investment, aside from the 2012 GF. I'm not saying he's been a poor investment either.

Even Sam has said he needs to have a big year and prove his worth. I'm not sure what his worth is, to be frank.

I'm happy - like him - to wait until season's end.

Reid is a required player but not at $800k, no way, that's insane.

Whenever I try and explain the notion of inflation to my kids, I revert to the potato scollop (no veiled swipe at Reid in this either).

I explain that when I was a kid scollops were 5 cents each, and then I ask them how much they are at the shops near their school. I explain that little has changed in terms of it, only its relative value.

They kind of understand, and not, which is probably the best way to comprehend the arbitrary concept of "value".

How much does a scollop inflate in 5 years when according to some it was under cooked, soggy and too salty when it looked so good out of the fryer?

Haha. I like it.

In the 1700's the poor in France ate oysters and drank Claret because it was all they could afford. How uncouth.

Post WW2 chicken was so expensive families could only afford it once a week for Sunday dinner.

Not so long ago many thought 500k contracts for Reid and White were a worry..

Now Collingwood thinks 800k for Reid is a steal.

And so it goes...

Band one compo would be amazing. Would give us some serious young talent for the future.

The figure has been set for next year $12.45m, a whopping $2.05m increase over this year.

Interestingly clubs use a mixture of fixed and indexed to future salary cap increase contracts. So depending on what a club does some may not have much of the extra to use and others right up to the $2.05m plus anything they have spare now.

Would be interesting to see if both/either of Buddy and Tippets deals are fixed. If they are its a bonus for us.

On Reid, coming out of contract this year and being a key forward means bonanza dollars for him. I am confident he will stay but it is going to cost $600k plus. Whether you like it or not that will be his current market value.

It won't be money that's an issue if Jones leaves we will have enough to pay what the market is offering, it will come down to whether he wants to return to Victoria or not.

But Sam Reid doesn't make enough of a difference for our team to justify that sort of coun so we let him go & free up some space for a genuine match winner & a few bit part players on low income that can play a role.
It's what we've done for the last 10 years or so.

When I was a kid we ate crumbed lamb cutlets a lot, because they were considered "cheap meat"....lol, now...

Everything comes and goes...

Same article Reid pretty much says he wants to stay, loves the lifestyle, girlfriend's from Sydney. So we'll see...
He'll have to sign for 400k then because he isn't worth more than that at our club based on how much game time he has had. I have no problem watching him in other colours knowing he would be milking 600 to 800k from them while at high risk of getting injured.

I'm not going to bag Reid here, simply because I think he's tried his best, but has been injury plagued. And he's still well and truly one of ours...and I remember that goal he kicked in the 2012 GF...It was GOOD.

Compared to the 500k they are giving Mayne for 4 years to play reserves 800k for Reid is a bargain!

You're right but the problem is, he's quite literally our only contested marking option. We are already terrible in that area. Granted he's not elite in contested marking but he's still better than anyone else on the list.

Tippett is supposed to be the other one but we all know how he goes in that regard.

Didn't really notice any contested marking from Reid worth more than 400k against a developing Brisbane team that were pretty ordinary the other day!

Next years average player salary with the cap increase is likely to be around $470k

He will not be milking it getting $600k a year and certainly is not going to have to Settle for $400k a year anywhere anytime soon.

That deal and Collingwood's cash to Wells is not something you can judge value on. 1 clubs ridiculously poor management doesn't make it an industry standard.

I mean if 1 person paid 200K for a 2005 Hyundai getz, would that mean that it sets the value of the car market?

Agree, but equally people need to adjust to a $12.45m total salary cap next year.

There will be average pay packets of $470K next year so $600K for mid age injury prone key forwards will be the norm.

We have to accept that now.

Pays will increase that is for sure. But if someone wants to pay 600K+ for S. Reid, even though I want him to be a Swan and I rate him as a player, I would tell him to take the cash and run. That's if he wants to leave Sydney and make his missus move interstate.

There is a salary cap, but just because of an increase you don't need to pay ridiculous overs to keep a player or sign a player.

That's not entirely correct because under the AFL rules you have to pay 97.5% (or there about) of the actual cap so depending on age profile etc on your list you will be playing some blokes overs.

I agree that Reid is not really worth $600k a year based on his inability to get out regularly onto the ground but one of the side effects of a $12.45m cap and no overall increase in list sizes means players are going to be overpaid under certain circumstances

Reid has been lucky enough to find himself in that position.

You pay players what they are worth. If you have a young/shit team, you would front load contracts. **** paying overs, you would just front load contracts so that when the team develops you have a war chest to get a Danger/Martin/etc... to polish off the list.

If someone is getting payed 500K per season over 4 years (2 million in total), you dont need to pay them 500k per year in the AFL. you could pay them 1 million in their first year, the rest over the final years for example. There is an art to list management. ****, you could pay them 1.8 million the first year and 200K over the next 3 years.

Basically, the AFL does not have a minimum wage per year as long as it is satisfied over a contract period.
