Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

Think Boyd is worth it.

Actually turned up to a grand final :(
You can't argue with this. 7 million investment that wins you a flag, without him we probably win that gf and the dogs drought continues. Even if he never plays a good game again it was worth it.

The figure has been set for next year $12.45m, a whopping $2.05m increase over this year.

Interestingly clubs use a mixture of fixed and indexed to future salary cap increase contracts. So depending on what a club does some may not have much of the extra to use and others right up to the $2.05m plus anything they have spare now.

Would be interesting to see if both/either of Buddy and Tippets deals are fixed. If they are its a bonus for us.

On Reid, coming out of contract this year and being a key forward means bonanza dollars for him. I am confident he will stay but it is going to cost $600k plus. Whether you like it or not that will be his current market value.

It won't be money that's an issue if Jones leaves we will have enough to pay what the market is offering, it will come down to whether he wants to return to Victoria or not.

If the Buddy deal isn't fixed we're absolute morons. Although after what a did with the Tippett contract it wouldn't surprise me.

The point of signing someone for 9 years is you can lock them in and benefit from the increased cap later on.

Better today

Coached stuffed him again

Now back it up next week is the challenge and not go to sleep for a month

Someone who we need to keep hold of, but don't have much hope. His importance to this team is immense. I felt so comfortable when the ball was being bombed inside 50 by Norf when he was the loose down back. If he wasn't playing today, most of those would've been plucked by a Norf tall. His ability to reid and time the ball in the air is what makes him one of the most valuable utilities in the game.

He played half the match in defense and was still the top goalscorer for the game. To say he's been 'sleeping' at times this season is very harsh for a bloke whose played in the Forwards, Defence, Ruck and Midfield. Only since Goodes in his prime can I remember a Swan being thrown around so much

And some people think he is not worth paying $600k a year.

Mid 20's, tall, can play either forward or back and pinch hit as a mobile ruckman.

We don't have anything else like him on our list and neither do a lot of other teams.

Only issue is staying on the park.

Don't want to lose him. If Longmire kept him in the forward line he would be kicking 2 or 3 goals every single week. His set shots are so much better these days as well than it was when he first begun. He is actually quite reliable in front of the big sticks.
I dunno how he turned around his kicking but it's amazing these days. Could never do that sort of thing constantly before

Honestly reckon that was one of the best games he's played for us on the weekend. Was the most influential player in whatever part of the ground he was in.

Rankings wise only game better is the one v gold coast in 2015

For the same money ? Reid.

Jones has lots of potential but Reid's type are rare.

Hopefully Reid feels some loyalty and stays for less

A fit AJ would be a boost for Reid

I was re-watching the game against the Bulldogs.

Reid was noticeable for his strong marks in the game... more so on replay

He has shown he can play like this before, but just with no consistency.

Usually the pattern is 2 good games, than a bunch of shit games.

But, a showing like he had against the bulldogs, his price can only rise.

Reading Ben Reid talk about Sam moving makes me think he'll resign

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-06-12/magpie-hopes-to-talk-brother-into-move

"He does love it up in Sydney and he's very settled up there, but at the same time I'll definitely try to get in his ear.

"It's his decision and whatever he decides on, as long as he's happy and playing footy, that's the main thing."

Maybe I'm reading too much into it but he keeps talking as if Reid will still and there's just a chance he'll move on

I may be a little one eyed but I think that article bodes well for us. Sydney is his preferred destination and it'll take something extraordinary to get him to move.... which would probably be big enough to guarantee us a tied to first round pick.

Smoke and mirrors..

I would take anything his family or agent says with a pinch of salt
Ben Reid was caught prattling on 5 years ago anyway, so I wouldn't put any thought towards it.

I wonder what's holding up his and Jones' signature though. There may well be salary cap pressure at the Swans, as some of the new contracts may have already taken the salary cap close to new maximum (Mills & Heeney). If that's the case, we've got to ditch Tippett, as there's no way in hell that's worth losing Reid & Jones, especially when he's going to be pissed off in a season anyway.

I think it's the TPP holding everything up. From what I've noticed (and i really haven't looked that closely) it is only the clubs that already would have a heap of room in their cap that have announced any significant re-signing.

That's right. And they're trying to get in early before the rest of the clubs are suddenly cashed up.
