Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

One of the best things about Sammy IMO, and something that really sets him apart from a lot of other young key position players, is his tackling and his ability at ground level. He has won several HTB frees inside 50 with strong tackles (his first goal against GC one example), and his pickups and quick hands are fantastic. I think it's a product of being short for most of his footballing years, before experiencing a late growth spurt that took him to his current height (at least, that's what a few articles says happened). He was a midfielder for his formative years, and he moves, and in many ways plays, like one.

He actually looks a bit unco at times, as if he's not used to being so tall, and his kicking is a good example. When he gets it right, he roosts it beautifully, but there's too much that can go wrong because he's bringing the ball down from so high. He has a midfielder's kicking action. That can be easily fixed though.

But yeah, his intensity and skills at ground level are something to behold for a lanky 19 year old CHF. They should really stand him in good stead.

Actually, let's go with what many posters have said this year.

1. Trade Reid and KJack - Bring in Brendan Fevola.
2. Sack Horse - bring in Terry Wallace.

There we go. I feel like a Richmond supporter. Better - isn't it?

Still needs to work on his kicking, should've kicked more in the GC game.

Agree with the poster earlier about his ball drop.

I've been watching Sydney when I can lately because I love the look of this guy. He is super impressive. Good speed, tall and a good mark. His kicking isn't quite there, but if there is one area you HAD to lack in early in your career, its goal kicking. With time he will improve his set shots and become a very good player for you guys. He is genuinely in my top 10 players I would like to steal from another club. There is so much to like about him.

You guys have yourself a serious gem here.

This kid is our shining light amongst all the shit performances of the past few weeks.

We really couldn't ask for any more from him.

Big rap for Sam Reid in the melb herald Sun this morning. A "Dorothy Dix" question from I presume one of Sam's mates from his home town of Bright asking Mike Shehan about the possibility of Sam Reid or Darling from West Coast winning rising star. Mike vote Sam as best as he has played CHF all year at only 19.

I saw the Sheahan remarks and I'm very surprised they haven't received much comment on this board. That's a massive statement, someone of Mike Sheahan's status declaring sam Reid his Rising Star of the season, ahead of the likes of Shuey and Heppell.

How good will Reid be when he grows up?

Some of the greatest forwards to have ever played the game didn't show as much as Reid has in their first 20 games.

He's either a very early developer, a potential superstar, or both.

I honestly think Reid is the most exciting young player i have seen at the Swans since i started watching the Swans back in the late 1990's. By exciting i don't quite mean his overall performances just yet but instead what i mean is the potential he is showing. I have never seen a 19 year old Swan with so much potential.

In saying that though i am dead terrified he will end up at GWS.

I have been thinking about the possibility of Reid and others moving to GWS and I don't think it will happen. Yes their is the lure of an enourmous wages but does anybody think that GWS are likely to win a flag before Sydney and after all that is what the majority of player want. When you see Reid doing the home invasions on the Swans site he seems very comfortable with the Swans players and I think that nucleus of Reid, Hannerbery, Johnson, Rohan, Parker and the others coming through Johnston & Lamb will win the Swans another flag. Why would you risk going to a club that is going to get flogged for 3 - 4 years when you are going to play finals in each of those years with the Swans?

Why would you want to play for the team that represents Blacktown?? I don't get it... :p

I agree, I think we are doing a reasonable job of developing that nucleus of guys like Reid, LJ, Smith, Hanners, Jack, Jets, Jesse and co. I'd like to see them give Jesse a bit more of a go personally but I guess at the end of the day his current form as opposed to potential is determining his inclusion. I'd just really love the coaches persist with a Reid, Jesse & TDL line up. I can see buckets of potential and a strong flexible foward structure in those 3.

Having watched Sam play a bit during his under 18 days, he's not an early developer. He was fairly lucky to be drafted as high as he was, and even then Swans said they drafted him on potential rather than ability. I've been amazed at how much he has improved since being drafted.

He was better at basketball - brilliant timing on the boards and amazing leap. His mum actually told me after he was drafted she wished he'd been a few inches taller so he might have made it in basketball instead! I think everyone has been surprised at how quickly he has developed into an AFL player, but he has a hell of a lot of improvement left.

Watching him at the G yesterday I noticed he often mistimes his run at the ball when going for a mark. There were quite a few occasions where he misread the flight and got into a poor position but still managed to contest.

So there's still a few parts of his game to come together yet, which is a very scary thought for his opponents.

Some of the comments in this thread have me seriously scratching my head.

How can ANY of you have doubts about this guy? I can tell you now there are 17 other clubs (not least of all, us) who would give up A LOT and gladly take him off your hands if given the chance.

I don't think you'll find a single swans supporter on this board who doubts he'll be anything less than a superstar of the game.

I think this thread's more a discussion about the areas he's yet to improve in, than any kind of doubts over his quality.
