Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

our midfield has really picked up the slack w.r.t kicking goals. They rotate through hf and the middle seamlessly and very effectively. Rok, kennedy, jude, mcglynn, goodes, jack, hannebery, bird are all capable of giving us goals when forward of centre.

Getting spangher in when he's fit (i still think he's the best option to be standing next to reid as the 2nd permanent tall) would be great if possible.

w.r.t?

A.y.s.w.a.p.d

I've never understood how people can roast a bloke who sucks in 3 defenders at a time, making it so much easier for those around him, if they make hay while the sun shines?

Reid doesn't have to kick bags IF we win. He just has to be the target, and if the others can convert, who cares, really????

We beat Hawthorn FFS. A side that has shat on us for years.

Absolutely spot on.

We smack the Hawks by 6 goals at their fortress. Sam Reid attracts 2 defenders all day. Fabulous result.

We haven't had a truly functional forward line for 2 years. But you don't need a good looking cow to end up with a fabulous steak.

The way the game is being played this year isn't conducive to big games for forwards. Most of the competitions power forwards seem well down on form so far.

Dunno what your acronym means but mine means with respect to...

Mine was,

'Are you serious, what a pretentious derpface.'

Wait til we suffer a loss eventually and reid has played 5, 6 or 7 terrible games in a row, then lets see who says that its alright to carry a down in confidence or injured reid....

This week gets no easier for him, rutten is a beast...

Was it shoenmakers who spent most of the game on reid yesterday, after gibson got hurt, most hawks fans think he is a spud...

How good will we be when reid snaps out of this rut he's in..

He'll come under pressure to keep his spot but guys like White, Spangher, Walsh need to put that pressure on him.

Can't work you out tbh, you bag everyone for saying similar to the above about White, yet you can say it about Reid?

I've stated it before, i love reid, hence my name is reidfactor.. Im concerned because reid isn't showing anything, all he's doing is taking the backman away from others...(well other being goodes when forward)

Nothing wrong with discussing reids form, figuring out why the sudden drop off in form, 14 quarters now 1 goal... He's our best forward ffs, stop using his age as an excuse guys...

I would only ever drop reid if injured, which he mustn't be if horse has kept playing him this long after freo game.

White must return and play forward mostly with a few spells in the ruck with seaby....

I think white can eventually help reid out, which he clearly needs...

Its awesome to have concerns and were 5-0 with the great draw ahead...

Nothing wrong with discussing at all, I'm just confused as to why you talk down Reid and pump up White.

It's a fact that the large majority of younger key forwards struggle, so bringing his age into the argument is perfectly fine. He'd love to ease his way into a career like Jack Darling with Lynch, Kennedy, Cox, NN floating around to take pressure off but he is pretty much a lone hand up forward. CHF is already the hardest position on the ground, let alone doing it with 2-3 defenders killing the contests he competes in.

As I've said before, you need to lower your expectations and judge him against similar aged players, not other no.1 key forwards for respective teams. Most no.1 key forwards aren't 20 and have played more than 50 games. We need Spangher/White back though, because he does need better support.

Reid's got a few things to work through.

1) Shoulder. Seemed to move better on the weekend
2) Confidence. Had those shots been goals we wouldn't be having this thread
3) Attention. Lots of it. No more slipping under the radar.

1) Will get better with time
2) Will get better with time
3) Will get better if we can put a more structured/settled forward setup around him.

Given Reid's average goal contribution is only a goal or so per game we're not in the position of depending on him scoring, eg, 'No Carey, No Norf'. What he does do, in the meantime, is to bring the opposition's defenders to him where he competes well and pressures well. The result is we have plenty of opportunities for our small forwards (eg, McGlynn, Jetta) and our goal scoring mids (eg, Bird, Kennedy, Bolton, Everitt, ROK, Hanners). When Goodes goes forward this puts more pressure on their defence. Another tall forward and some decent structure and any defence is going to be stretched to breaking.

Given we've booted some nice 3 figure scores this year we're obviously getting good results from our 'dysfunctional' forward line and have the luxury of developing a real depth of forward options.

Age is a factor. I've stated on another thread. Wayne Carey had a poor year at 20 years old despite having a Coleman medallist (Horse) by his side and taking the best defender.

The age excuse has been used to give Jesse game time but he's now 24 and has to earn it. He was unlucky to be dropped after his last good game but clearly Reid has the greater claim for patience and perseverance.

All the indications suggest that Horse would bring White back into the team should an opportunity beckon. In the meantime it's great that there's a host of potential forwards hunting like sharks in a bloodied bathing pool. I don't care who makes the cut in the end but we will get there.

One thing worth acknowledging is that even though he's not currently clunking marks, he's not letting his opponent(s) take marks either. He's bringing the ball to ground and at the very least creating a stoppage. That's why the "kick it to Reid" strategy is still working, despite his lack of goals; it gets us up the field, and our midfielders/resting forwards finish it off.

It would be a very different story if Reid was being constantly beaten and his opponents were rebounding off him. It's not ideal, but it's not too bad, and in fact, an argument could be made that with his goal-kicking as it currently is, maybe it's better that other players are the ones taking shots!

I dont have to talk reid down atm, his last 3 and a half games do all the talking..

White has shown more then reid last 2 games he played b4 being dropped, and i hope he replaces lrt this week..

I was right about the swans making a mistake bringing lrt straight back in at whites expense...

One of the things i thought horse did right yesterday was start smith as the sub, thats the way to do it, bring returning players back as subs or thru the 2's. lrt should never have played yesterday especially with a fit and improving white at his disposal..

Disclosure- again- white will never be in reids stratosphere but he will eventually be his right hand man up forward imho....

remember - when you have snipers like Benny, Jetta, Goodes, Jack, Kennedy sniffing crumbs, it's in the best interests of the team if Reid presents and drops marks.

Sam Reid playing injured?

Is Sam Reid playing injured?

In round 2 against Freo, he was dominating, taking pack makrs, kicking straight, beating McPharlin 1-on-1. Then right before half time he (IIRC) landed awkwardly on his shoulders and barely touched it for the rest of the game.

Since then he has played 3 games for:
21 touches (7 a game)
8 marks (3 a game)
and has kicked 1.4

Is he playing injured or are defenders just getting the best of him, or both?

Re: Sam Reid playing injured?

Have a look at his grab when Everitt scorched the wing taking 3 bounces, kicked long and finally got Reid one on one, he took at at full stretch. Shit kick at goal but thats not the point.. He hits packs not favoring it and he seemed to stretch well so if he is injured its a matter of managing it. Youd be surprised at how many AFL players play with a managed injury.

Kelly famously played with broken ribs.

As an aside, Everitt's scorch of the wing showed, among other things he did, that he really does have some pace. What's more he still had the time and presence of mind to centre the kick to Reid's advantage. Nice play. Last week Caj was trying to convince me Everitt was slow. I argued otherwise having seen him run in support of Jetta against Norvs in the NAB Cup. Not sure how fast he is over 20m but he can fly when he's moving. Wing seems to suit him.

Reid will learn to play through injuries like every player does that lasts the distance. Half will spend their lives after football paying for that. It may not have the biffo of yesteryear but players are moving very fast these days. It's still a bloody hard sport.

Re: Sam Reid playing injured?

FYI, I've merged the two Reid threads.

Still don't think he's injured, or injured enough to miss games, but he is still smashing packs. So at least he isn't useless.

when it comes to his goal kicking, he's doing a few things wrong..!. Head over the ball, he leans back to much....keep the leg straight , he's too bendy...drop the ball lower..and stop moving your arms around so much. Oh, and point your toe!!
