Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

Watched AFL Insider last night and then the replay on TV just then.

Sam Reid is doing some amazing things off the ball that doesn't go on stat sheets.

Our midfield is scoring because of him.

1) He crashes packs and makes a contest for our midfield at his feet. Even ones that are numbered heavily in the opposition's favour.

2) He took the spare man in defence as made two on ones so that the rest of the team had one on ones and we had a spare in defence.. AFL Insider explains. Gibson and Hodge are good spare men to have in defence but Stratten and Shoenmakers are not and are told to take key forwards from the opposition. What Reid does, while being chased by Shoenmakers, is go to Hodge. As mentioned, Shoenmakers will follow Reid and this makes the 2 on 1. Two things happens, either comment 1 (see above) or the midfield hit up another forward, a mid who ran in to the forwards line or a resting mid. It also keeps our free in our defence. The other options is for Shoenmakers to think that Hodge will cover Reid and he (Shoenmakers) will be the free man in defence. But as mentioned, Shoenmakers is not a good free man in defence. So we win the position coz Reid does a non-stat able clever thing!!

Go SAMMY!

In relation to this thread i must say we throw the kitchen sink at Cloke who will be a restricted free agent.

That would automatically mean Cloke will get the best defender allowing Reid to flourish.

Reid/Goodes/Cloke hmmmmmmm

Sounds good, but the salary cap might get in the way. I think we stick with what we got right now, keep developing Jesse and look to teh draft for a mobile tall who can ruck a bit

Isn't that Walsh? Or is he something different again?

Good point, I hadn't thought about Tommy, the general feeling among those who watch ressies is that he's a fair way off playing seniors. He probably will make for a good forward option, but they are still playing him at both ends of teh park to sort him out. He may even end up in the middle after all that. Too soon to say from what I've been told

He has let the money and hype go to his head, it is so disappointing how bad his form is.. I rated him so high, but everyone needs to pull there weight, taking 2 backs is not enough.. He's paid to kick goals, time for a spell, bring tdl or white back in...

i called this weeks ago, its getting worse

I agree with the criticisms, but we'd be absolutely ****ed without him, ESPECIALLY if Goodes is out. It's not like we've got any other options banging the door down. There isn't a single other player in the ressies that will demand the attention of opposition key defenders that Reid does. At present, he's preventing opposition key defenders from marking and rebounding, because no matter how bad his form has been, he's never being out-marked. You put White in Reid's position, and you might get an extra goal per game out of him, but you'll also get about 5 fewer scoring shots and 5 more opposition rebound 50s, which is a loss overall.

The mids weren't doing him any favours by kicking straight to him and Talia, and asking him to enter a wrestling contest. He's not strong enough yet to win those and instead his teammates should be kicking into space for him to lead and jump into, that's what he's good at.

Reid is out of form, yes but I have no idea why people are going crazy over it.

Lots of young players have very down periods in performance. Lots of young players are given time to improve this situation. Jesse White was given an age an a day in the seniors to put together some consistency. He didn't so he went back to the ressies fair enough, but he got MORE THAN 3 GAMES to prove himself.

Reid is down on confidence, had been triple teamed in a forward line that he knows is very dependent on him. It's pressure as much as anything. An easy stint in the ressies isn't going to help him fix the problems he's got in the seniors. All it might to is break his confidence more.

Anyway it's not like we've got player in the Reserves jumping up and down for his spot either.

He stays.

Settle down.

What does money or hype have to do with his form?

"He's been a bit sore for a couple of weeks with a few niggles and he hasn’t done a lot of training," Longmire said.

"He was able to do a full session on Thursday, his first full session for a couple of weeks, so hopefully now he can get into a full training program and that will help his form.

"You have to be able to train to get your form."

Earlier in the season it was Hannebery & ROK, now Reid, I wish we'd be a bit more circumspect in playing underdone guys.

I know a lot of players play with niggles, but Reid has been down for 3 weeks now, surely a rest could have been considered.

He's a mirror image of Liam Jones.

Both struggling with more attention this year, after really not capitalising on their talent last year.

The thing is though he's copping the same amount of attention as last year.

If he hasn't been training much he is struggling a bit with something. Confidence has dropped a bit.

I get the feeling it is only around the corner. I think he needs to lead further up the ground at times to bring himself into the game, but of course that may not have been the instructions given to him.

Looked a bit better in the second half, and I am sure he will continue to develop. He is playing a role in the team at the moment, taking 2 defenders often gives us an extra man. We have used this to very good effect so far this season.

Eventually he will come to terms and our delivery will be better to his strengths. Too often we kick to him at a 1 on 1 contest(or 1 on 2). He is not yet strong enough to win these. We need to kick it out in front of him. It is possible his injury is causing him to be a little "pack shy" so to speak. But he is playing his role and if the medicos think he's good to play then we have nobody else that can play his role.

The boy is a superstar!
He stays in the team as his upside in 10 minutes of football can be devestating to the opposition. He must get senior games into him this year so he can get to that magical 50 - 60 games mark where players seem to find their feet & become more consistent. In the seniors he comes up against different scenarios & different defenders every week. It will benefit him in the future. In the reserves he comes up against some rubbish!

He understands the team rules & follows them even when not having a great game statistically. That's what the coaches want from him.

Unless he is under duress, he should stay put.
I'm sure the Swans coaches will do the right thing by him & his family!

In the mean time everyone should leave the boy alone because he is an extraordinary talent for his age.

We carried Jetta for 2 years and look how that's turned out. Be patient, playing against witches hats in the ressies does no one any good.

+1

Reid was clearly hindered when trying to mark yesterday. he's at least getting into good positions like he is supposed to. Lets wait wait a few seasons, he is only 20 and will be a class marking forward when his time comes.
