Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

Leave him where he is and it will work out. He has been put in a situation where there are high expectations of him. He has double sometimes triple players on him, this is something he and the coaching staff will work out. As a previous poster has stated they persisted with Jetta for two years and he is just terrific at present. We have lost one game and that cannot be left at Reids feet surely? He is a big boy who is still growing physically and also mentally, I have no doubt he will be what we are hoping he will be. I have absolutely no problem leaving him in the team and backing him to the hilt.

We carried Jetta for 2 years and look how that's turned out. Be patient, playing against witches hats in the ressies does no one any good.

It'd certainly help him get his kicking confidence up, which is his main problem at the moment.

If he has been injured then he should not have been playing.

Sometimes lifes a bitch and injured players need to play for the need of the team.

However in the case of young players missing training it's not optimal where as the likes of O'Keefe or Shaw may be able to carry more of their natural strength into game day on less work.

Give the kid a break...he's 20 years old and already has 2 backmen on him at times, with 1 all over him. Not many 20 year olds are the focal point of a top 4 potential team. When he wasn't being held last night he took a couple of great marks and his kicks for goal were from 50m out on angles.

He gone far and above our expectations of him when we drafted him. He could be our best KPF we have seen, give him time, KPP take longer to develop.

Took Buddy a couple of years

His direct opponent had only played 15 games, saying that he got alot of help. Sam is young and will have alot of ups and downs, looking forward to seeing him pick himself up. Thats what champs do. You can see it, he is a winner.

If playing Reid is medically proven to have no bad repercussions for his current injury or the future I don't see the point in dropping him out of the side as he is important for structure. At this point in time we have no one to really stand up and assert themselves in the contest Reid style. Assuming he is injured of course.

With Sam Reid presenting and Goodes supporting him plus our crumbers, it's a very good structure. Barry Hall was great for us too - but don't forget for most of the time, we would consistently deliver it to him when he had 2 or 3 defenders on him. When Mickey O was up and running, then Hally had more space and was lethal.

It may take some weeks, but soon one of Jesse/Morton/Walsh/Spangher will develop into his forward partner supported by crumbers, Goodes, TDL etc. Something to look forward to.

And how long did it take Travis Cloke or Jonathan Brown?

Most youngsters take a great deal of time... You never really know how good they are going to be until they are 21 or 22

Talk about an over reaction, the kid is only 20 and has been double teamed all year, sure his not taking the marks, but atleast he is providing a contest bring the ball to ground. The midfield have to take some responsibility for the shocking delivery they are giving him, plus who do we have in the ressies that could do a better job than him............... jesse walsh pyke LOL

Just have to look at the rest of the young ower forwards this year

J volt - is a coleman medalist, going through some poor form

T vikery - kicked 35 goals last year, been awful this year

Hurley - before he got injured he had done nothing spectacular this year

J Buther - again has done nothing this year

L jones - similar player to reid, also having a tuff time now that bazzy has left

J darling - now that heis n.o 1-2 forward for the eagles and not playing on 3rd tall/HBF he struggled yesterday as well having to go against the best defender

Thats just of the top of my head, im sure there are more, so just give the kid a break, his form will turn around

Out of curiosity, do people consider that the potential of Reid, is better than that of Jesse White, who was spruked as a superstar early on also. There was alot if support for Jesse 2 years ago, I was one of them, and he hasn't lived up. I've no doubt at all that Sam Reid will come good at some point, so particularly while Goodes is out, he does need to stay and hopefully find some form and confidence.

I don't think White ever scared opposition defences as much as Reid can, even if Reid's kicking at goal is quite bad. Having said that, White still has the chance to become that 2nd forward we desperately need and I really believe he's capable of a 40 goal season if he plays intelligent football.

The frustrating thing about our forward line right now is we do have a potentially lethal forward line in Reid, Goodes and Rohan and now we'll have to wait until 2013 to see them play together.

Reid has so much more potential than White, his hands, his football smarts, his kicking (except for goal for now), his build is just as impressive and is growing, he is a natural footballer I cant believe Im having this discussion... did I mention his hands?

I like White dont get me wrong but c'mon. Only the fact White can ruck a bit is keeping him in although Id like to see him kept forward without rucking at all. Id say Reid could get over him in a ruck contest too but thats not what we want.

We should keep doing what we're doing with Reid. Play him. Let him learn. Let him take the bumps and grow with it.
He'll be right.

Oh and some time soon the umpires will notice the blocks and holds!

Agree. As I said much earlier. Wayne Carey had a similar slump at the same age despite the advantage of playing next to a Coleman medallist FF in Horse.

Sam is as natural a forward as Jesse isn't. That's not saying Jesse can't make it as a forward but Reid definitely will. With 2 of our tall forwards out injured folks talk about dropping our remaining pillar of the forward line ? Serious ? Vonn summed it uo. If he can play without any long term damage, keep him playing

Out of curiosity, do people consider that the potential of Reid, is better than that of Jesse White....

No I'm not. Neither am I comparing Reid to White in 2012. Obviously Reid is a class above. I am thinking about White from 2 years ago, when he showed enormous potential as a key forward.

Asked and answered ^^^

White came on in a rush in the absence of Hall, and seemingly gone backwards in his development since. In particular his inability to take a grab in the F50 and then convert this on the scoreboard.

I still believe Jesse has a ton pof upside but I can't say I believe Jesse has shared my optimism over the past couple of years.

He has a golden opportunity here to cement a spot in the team and start the road to redemption.

Let's hope he takes it.

Reid is clearly hurt at the moment. That knock to the shoulder against Fremantle has hurt him more than the club is letting on but with Goodes and Rohan out now, he has to persist.

Personally, I'd prefer him to sit for 2-4 weeks and heal his shoulder. This is our best part of the year to get him right for later in the year and beyond. He's still just a boy really. I know J. Darling is just as young but he is more mature physically. Reid is struggling now because he is taking a great defender every week, has a bung shoulder and is low on confidence when kicking for goal.

This week should be Mitch Morton playing out of the goal square, Jesse in at CHF working up the ground to act as the link man for our half back flankers who run forward and also Jetts on the handball flying past.

Would also love ROK to play deeper forward. He's not the running machine he used to be so I think he adds more value to the team as a deep forward. Creates another avenue for goal.

My favoured line-up this week is:

OUT: Goodes, Reid (through necessity to get his shoulder right. I hate dropping him as I haven't been this excited about one of our forwards that we have drafted and developed ourselves, probably ever).

IN: Mitch Morton, Jesse White
FP:Ryan O'Keefe FF: Morton FP: TDL
HFF: Lewis Jetta CHF: Jesse White HFF: Andrejs Everitt

Is it a premiership winning forward line? No. Does it have the potential to beat Richmond? Yes.

Mitch and ROK deep forward together could create a mismatch for us and if we continue to persist with Andrejs, at least have him start. He offers no spark whatsoever as the sub, but does add value up forward because his kicking is extremely reliable.

Who is omitted for TDL?
