Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

How does that theory work. With Goodes out he cant be dropped because he's needed to cover Goodes but saying that he'll play somewhere Goodes does not and take the spot of someone who does it better than Reid does?

If Reid cant be dropped why Goodes is out than he's anchored at FF.

how many talls do u want out at the same time cas?

Lets just leave reid in the same spot as the past 7 weeks, thats working out just fine and dandy..

how do you know reid cant do a better job then grundy?

Right now. The fact any physical play has ensured Reid doesn't win any contests or double back for a second lead. At the moment he'd be walked all over by tall physical forwards who would be able to lose him in traffic.

reid has been exceptional at spoiling all season, perfect for a defender..

instead of letting them take easy marks, reid could knock it down to the malceskis and shaws...

Reid's not been spoiling he's been spilling and when he has in the last couple of weeks it's fallen to the hands of the opposition runners.

He'll come good as a forward he's just a roadblock that needs a new strategy to overcome.

Who cares what his brother is?

to be fair to reidfactor, obviously sharing genetics they both have similar attributes, and a very close football upbringing and Ben got an AA.. Im not calling for it but Ive read many, many, many lol shitter calls on our board than trying Sam down back because of what his brother can do down back.

he's been spilling marks all season, not bad for 800k plus a year, could take them when on peanuts..

teams have worked out his weaknesses, so its up to us to counteract this.. or continue to be checkmated!!

How can anyone counter argue my opinion on reid, the stats dont lie, the guy cant get a kick, take a mark, or kick a goal.. how can he continue to play this same role when he's having no impact.

With goodes out, he cant be dropped, but he can be transformed somewhere else, surely someone like scottwade must agree, someone with a clue.. scott give me a reason why reid cant be moved down back to eliminate the double team.. and dont say we need him to just compete for the crumbers...

Hows this, Ben reid started his career forward as well, but had a similar goal kicking problem to sam.. so he went down back and won all australian.. you guys need to think out of the circle your going around in.. i know playing him somewhere different is surely a better option then dropping him to the worst comp in australia... this is my opinion.. stop killing him when theres another solution..

People have countered your opinion. Fact is, our defence is our best asset, and Reid still attracts the attention of defenders, resulting in less focus on our other forwards. Moving Reid back would risk us losing these benefits. Now, you could argue that it's worth the risk, and if you'd read my earlier post, I'm actually tempted to agree. But many don't, and that's a reasonable position to take as well. After all, it's a pretty big move to make, especially if it means shifting somebody like Grundy forward.

Of course, rather than accepting that we would risk these benefits but explain that to you it's worth the risk, which when it comes down to it is ultimately a matter of opinion, you have simply attacked both the football knowledge and loyalty (both considerable) of those that dare to think it isn't worth the risk.

Now, as I explained earlier, opinion on this board often varies wildly. There is no boys club in that respect. However, there is a universal rejection of posters who, rather than justify their opinions, resort to personal abuse and exude such an immense, and false, sense of superiority. If that makes it a boys club, then I guess it's a boy's club. Though I dare say Vonn, Soph and the other female regulars might have a word or two to say about that label.

What a soothing, didactic post.

What a players wage has got to do with getting dropped or not is the worst line of justification of your theory....
If you drop Reid who comes in, in other words who is better.
persistance and patience has worked for Jetta, so be bloody patient...
I would look at help..example every week Tommy Walsh has been crashing packs ect ect...well play him and give him license to hit packs hard and divert from Reid...
Another line of thinking, we have a legend still living in NSW, pay the big fella to tutor, support and mentor Reid, he would be pretty handy to demonstrate goal kicking ability.
How easy it is to "drop" him, what an easy solution...but is it right? or do you go to all resources and develop....
Now I wonder of all you screaming for him to be dropped are so pumped about Jetta this year??? interesting

Jetta isn't a good example. For the last couple of years he couldn't kick a goal to save himself and generally wasn't strong enough to be a truly effective 4 qtr midfielder. No matter what, he has always been effective, and has generally created something with his run.

Reid looked good in the first couple of games, looked like he was really going to do something special this season. Gets a knock against the Roos and looks like he couldn't dominate an U14s game. What do you do with him? Well you can either persist and keep his retched run of form going. The run of form where he hasn't kicked a goal and I wouldn't trust him to get one 2m directly out either. Or you could move him back, but seriously what a pointless move. Because his brother is, is a bullshit reason to do it.

My mind is you send him back to the reserves, have him focus on his leading and beating opponents 1v1. His goal kicking accuracy will come, but he is completely devoid of confidence in his marking at the moment. The only way he will get confidence to lead and charge packs is to send him down.

I'll just repost what I said on the main board thread:

He was a 19 year old playing CHF last year and he was much better. He kicked three goals in a half on McPharlin earlier in the year.

Look, I love the guy. Nothing would make me happier than watching him just explode into the CHF he has the potential to be. When I was sitting at the SCG I was so excited in that first half because I thought that was the game where he was going to kick and bag and really break out.

Instead, he got a huge knock on his shoulder about two minutes before half time and his output since then has been terrible. In the last 5 rounds he's kicked a total of 1 goal, is averaging 6.4 touches a game, and 2.6 marks per game.

I understand that as a young player in a hard position he's going to be inconsistent. Heck, if you went through my post history a month ago, I was saying that exact thing. But he's had five rounds of not just average performance, but really bad performances.

He needs to go to the reserves because at the moment he looks completely lost. He's not leading, he's not jumping, and when he does get the ball, he's stuffing up his disposal. Get him in the reserves where he can work on this stuff and get some confidence back. No offence to Melbourne, but if we can't beat them without Reid, we weren't going to beat them with Reid.

The idea of well 'who's better?' seems a bit pointless. I'd rather a forward line of Morton, TDL and O'Keefe. If we don't have a tall forward performing, then we don't have a tall forward. Better to stick in a medium who might be able to find space and lead than a guy who's getting beaten in every contest he goes for.

Dogs made prelims before barry hall with just brad johnson. It's not like you need a tall forward to make the finals. They definitely help. You just need a functional forward line.

Well since you mentioned me specifically. :)

I don't think we can retain him in the team as a forward.
His workrate was poor yesterday and he is either injured or totally devoid of confidence. Perhaps both. He was rarely double teamed yesterday.
Last year he was leading at the ball, demanding the ball. Latterly he looks like a guy who is hoping the ball goes to another player. He's not getting to enough contests, he's not marking the ball enough when he does get to a contest and his kicking is poor.

IMO keeping him in the side is not doing him or the team any favours.

I think most people on here were in favour of his long term deal, because we could see his ability, his determination, his will.
He is so down in all those areas I think he needs to go to the ressies and start enjoying his football. Get a few touches, clunk a few marks, kick a bag of goals.

As for going to defence, I see 2 problems.
Our defence has been performing relatively well. We would be disrupting one unit to solve a problem elsewhere. However the more major concern is that Reid would be under as much pressure down back to perform as he is up forward. Also as far as I'm aware he has been predominantly a forward all his life. Making an out of form/injured player learn a new role, whilst playing in the seniors is a huge ask.

In his current state I think it is most beneficial for Reid's development and welfare and the team's performance for him to have a spell in the magoos.

Give him the game against the dees if he fails again rest him just a week off
To get his body right.

White should stay in as well, tho i didnt see last night, tdl shouldnt be sub tho

Your Jetta analogy is rear vision logic, THIS YEAR has become a real link within the team and has been our most accurate, your conclusion shows you have not understood the point made.
persist with Reid, alter his role within the team, by sending him back to the 2nds will not further development due to sub standards with that comp

Problem is that as bad as the Dees are going Reid could well be matched up against an AA defender in Frawley.

As for White I think if you did see yesterday's game I feel you might have a different opinion regarding him. Even his biggest promoter in reidfactor acknowledged he underperformed.

As for TDL I think he has got universal praise for his cameo yesterday and I can't imagine him anywhere but on the ground at the bounce down against Melbourne.

id only keep white in purely because before last night i thought he was unlucky to be dropped for the hawks. Now he has rubbish stats from last night but hes a tall big body and we need them to fire, so why not give him one or two weeks at least, get the confidence up and see, who else is knocking the door down.

I guess for Reid though v the dees he may get a better quality of delivery if our mids get on top.

One of the great days on this board.

Uh................yeah!

Glad I stayed away today.

May have been red carded myself.

We're sitting 5 & 2 & one game off the top, got some nasty injuries to critical players & our board has gone into meltdown because one of our genius posters can't handle another poster saying "no........I don't agree with you"!

This has happened every week after a game. The last few weeks has been about how White should be in ahead of LRT. Now the focus is off White because this poster FINALLY saw how little inpact White had, so the focus is now on Reid.

"Let's play him in defense"...........................Geezuz!

I don't care who plays next week.
Our coaches will put in the players that they think will do the best job in their best position on the day.

IT DON'T ALWAYS WORK OUT FOLKS!

But as a long time supporter of this great club, I will walk away still content with what the players give even if they come up short on the odd occassion.

I cannot believe that someone wanted Alex Johnson dropped.

I could have sworn he was one of our best through out whilst watching live at the ground.

So I watched the replay today just in case I had it wrong.

The guy was brilliant for the whole game. Tried his guts out with many spoils & saves. Nick Smith was too. Our whole defensive unit was pretty good considering the amount of times it came in because of the lack of frontal & midfield pressure up field.
A team's back six is always vulnerable if the players upfield break down.

Miller's marking & goals was just from passes from players running straight towards him down the middle with no pressure on them.
Scarlett or Fletcher couldn't have stopped those & any vegetable would have marked them & kicked the goals accordingly!

Even McGlynn was throwing himself around more than some others trying to tackle. He stays in the team as far as I'm concerned.

Just let the coaches pick the team because, as I mentioned in a post last night, if it was up to many on here, there would be 10 changes to the team this week even though we've only got 4 or 5 players in the twos that can cut it at senior level following the Swans game plan.

He was rarely double teamed yesterday.

That's not true. There was generally always a player blocking the space for him to lead into, and that same player would be the one who also ran back to help out his team mate if the ball was bombed into Reid.

Couldn't even take a contested 1v1 mark yesterday. In the 3rd & 4th qtrs they weren't even kicking it to him when he was 30m in space with just one player to beat.

He's gotta be back to the 2's until he can find his touch and rhythm again. Same with Everitt.

Agree totally, but we are playing melbourne this week so it's kinda the same thing.
