Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

I reckon the toughest love of all is to leave him in the seniors, letting him get it from the leaders/teammates & coaches. We'd be letting him off easy giving him a couple of weeks in the 2s. He's got a nice long contract already signed up and knows how much investment has already been put into him. I don't think a couple of weeks off would help him more so than just prevent him from pushing through whatever issues he's having and learning to deal with it at the most elite level.

The argument of sending him back to the 2s sounds like, to me anyway, an easy way out and us wrapping him up in cotton wool a bit. I'd rather see us indicate our committment to him as long as he continues to work hard at developing. I mean, by all means if he's not fulfilling his obligation and not working as the coaches want him to then punish him by dropping him. Same for any player. But to drop him for fear he hasn't yet developed certain aspects (tank, body etc) I think will stagnate his development even further rather than push him to the limit each week so he can rpove to himself he's slowly developing and has what it takes.

We are in the midst of a premiership defense and a lot of teams have improved, we cannot afford to carry a kpf for the whole season. Sooner or later it could hurt the team. The players seemed to have lost confidence in him

Game 50 this week - important milestone for tall forward. I don't have time to re-watch the game from last week but I can't help but think that if oppositions are playing a defender close to him to stop his run and jump, and double teaming him at times that it is creating opportunities for our midfield to be so prolific.

People are way too harsh on Reid.

Yes he has dropped a few marks recently and has had a few clangers but he has been leading up the ground creating space for the forwards behind him.

He has been integral to our structure and is more than pulling his weight.

Just because a forward doesn't kick 3-6 goals every game doesn't mean he isn't doing a good job.
He hasnt kicked 3 - 6 goals in any game. I think every player needs to earn his spot in the team and not sure that he deserves to be there at the moment. I think a stint in the ressies would do him good. Many other players have been dropped to allow them to pick up confidence, Reid shouldnt be treated as a prima donna and treated differently. I also believe he will eventually be a star, but playing him week in week out in the seniors doesnt seem to be helping him atm.

Reid's working his butt off and pulling the lion's share of the defence. He needs to keep working through this in the seniors. Let the coach and players decide. I detest this BF sniping and sooking.

Live last week and on TV this week he seemed to be working hard. I thought he was OK last week but poor overall against North. No point in dropping him though - he is way to advanced for the NEAFL.

During the North game I was actually thinking we could take an opportunity to switch him with LRT. He couldn't play on a monster forward but he may be OK on a third tall. He is quick, agile, seems to work hard and tackles OK. Most importantly, he seldom gets outmarked - either one on one or in a pack. He doesn't take enough marks as we all know but he always seems to get his hands to the ball - even in a pack of 6 players. This seems like it would be useful as a defender and, let's face it, there would be no one better to be the third man to a contest to spoil.

I actually thought he was a CHB when we recruited him - could be wrong.

He was a CHB at state level when we recruited him correct, But he has only been playing in defence for one season.

Before that he was a midfielder, He just had a rather massive growth spurt between 16-17

God, this. The kid's 21 FFS. He's young and has a long way to go. PLUS he's pulling probably 2 defenders a week for the last season just about. Give him some time rather than saying he needs to be dropped. Dropping someone isn;t a confidence booster at all...

Not sure if u only meant this season but he did kick 6 against the lions last year. With his talent ad athleticism he is capable of kicking minimum of 3 a week. Just needs to put it together and believe in himself. I have a feeling if he can string 2 or 3 games together where he kicks 2-3 goals , there will be no stopping him

I may well be on my own here, but I didn't think his game yesterday warrants the criticism it has received.

Thought his first and last quarters were quite reasonable.
Quieter in the second and third.
Horrible dropped mark, but 10 disposals, couple of nice contested marks, 4 tackles, 3 dish offs off for goal assists and a couple of scores which admittedly probably should have been goals.

His role at present appears to mainly be to lead up, with our resting ruck playing deep and Goodes seemingly also playing closer to goal.

His development has probably been slower than I anticipated, but we have very little in the way of alternatives and provided his work rate is maintained I'm happy to retain him in the team.

Not on your own at all. The key is his workrate ... there's no doubting his potential; the thing he had to keep improving was workrate and effort. He showed sings in the GF, and showed again Saturday he's learning the value to the team of getting busy, chasing (when we've got the ball and when we haven't) and being in a contest.

Says it all. I think a lot of Sydney fans seem to be acting like spoilt brats, expecting every player to star in every game. The sniping and bitching has become obsessive; every week posters have to have a nitpicking whinge about one player for the sake of it, maybe because there's no genuine serious issues (in regards players, form, results, etc) to discuss. Let's face it, 2-3 years ago, a win like Saturday's would have meant this board was a full-on love fest for days ...

The kid hardly kicked a goal in the finals either yet he played his part, often taking critical marks between wing & half back. The most notable in the GF in the last when Malceski just couldn't quite get it through the half back line on successive attempts at kick ins. The Hawks just kept bringing it back. Reid took a critical mark that nearly killed Pike but it gave us the chance to push forward again, giving our poor defenders some relief, however short it was.

He is there to stay whether he kicks goals or not as long as he gives the opposition a headache where they need to watch him.
Our goals come from anywhere, anytime, from anyone. Unpridictability is the key to our success & is the reason opposition teams respect us. Sammy is part of that. He must be watched & shown respect by his opponent.

He's doing what he needs to do for the team.

He works hard, he always presents and even if he's not taking a bunch of screaming pack marks he's at least contesting and bringing it to ground for the crumbers. He's good at pushing up to take marks on the wing and getting the ball back inside 50 for the mids pushing through (who are kicking a lot of goals with this strategy).

Yes he was rusty against North and dropped some sitters but he's not at a point where he needs to go back to the seconds. He still provides a good focal point and wait until he doesn't have to carry the best defender around on him and he forms part of the two headed monster when KT gets on the park.

Would it be totally outrageous to run him through the middle now and then? Break the close attention, get him involved if quiet or getting beaten and he is pretty good in traffic etc, ala Buddy..

WTF. Despite the fact he didn't have the best marking game, i think i counted 2-3 goal assists from being able to stay in the contest and dish off handballs to finishes from Mcglynn and co.
Talk of dropping him for White is absolutely laughable. Our structure would go out the window.

There is one poster above, criticising, nay lecturing, a number of people for suggesting Reid might need some time off in the 2s to re find some form and he's earning earning plaudits for this criticis. Who when it suited him had been incredibly obsessive and anti a particular player and sticking the boots into his form and suggesting he was not good enough.

Frankly to see him now criticising other people for expressing a view on Reid that is mild compared to his on the player he had in his sights, that is extremely interesting.

Stab in the dark: goat and Grundy?

Don't remember goat having issues with Grundy.

Not that I object to to people having opinions, defending them, debating them, changing them or even scoring on them.

Just rather surprised to see someone critising others for even holding a contrary one....

bedford and our mighty captain Sir Jarrad McVeigh.

SM and Grundy would be who you stabbers are after. His hatred of Grundy is obsessive.

Bedford and myself have backed right off McVeigh; in fact, as I've posted several times in the past TWO FCKNG YEARS, IDIOTS, I believe McVeigh has grown incredibly in his role. I do now believe he is one of the elite midfielders in the game, rarely puts a foot wrong, and an outstanding captain. Not sure if Bedford's quite that far along the track but I think he's come to praise rather than bury him in recent times.
