Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

I think negativity is saying one of the best midfields in the league provides 'pathetic supply'. Why are you hating on the rest of the side?
We are 18th in the league for kicking efficiency in 2013.

That may have something to do with the words 'pathetic supply', which despite being crudely phrased is highly relevant when discussing Sam's form.

This is what I try to wrap my head around. Horse knows the value of a forward line, yet can't seem to build one up here. You can imagine how frustrated he would be if he was on the end of some of the delivery into the forward 50.

Then again, it's not like he is teaching Sam Reid how to drop marks.

Too much focus on marks he misses. Sam snagged 11 marks against Freo including the draw saver. Pretty easy to spoil a big kick like that but very difficult to mark. He drops the odd one when his confidence is down but he's still one of the best in the team. Get Tippet in and Sam under less pressure. I expect we'll see why we signed him for the long haul.

Just sayin' :P

It just highlights how much more flexible Horse needs to be in using Sam. No point putting him in the 50 where he gets the best defender or double teamed. Use him around the grounds to clunk those marks and create opportunities.

It sadly creates an argument to have Walsh or White in the team until Tippett plays :( Although in the ressie highlights, Jesse actually looked like a forward at times!

Your right Walsh or White one of them will have to play until Tippett and LRT arrive , unless Everitt goes forward but I think we will need him dowm back this week , don't no who they will pick out of them 2 flip a coin, but one thing is if Plugger come back nexted week a played in that 2s league he would kick 10.

Still see so much potential in this guy. Was a bit better tonight.

It is odd how many times he gets himself into a great position, gets hands to the ball and doesn't hang on. He also drops sitters.

When he first came into the side he clunked everything.

Not sure if it is a confidence thing or not, but if we can get him going he will be valuable.

He surprised me with his competitiveness in the ruck contests, has a better leap than i thought and has an incredible reach. Can see him making a great swingman, but i don't see him being as effective as LRT has been in defence. He has been a highly underrated (maybe not amongst Swans fans) lockdown defender for a number of years - but i think Reid is easily athletic enough to sit in the hole, cover ground, provide a contest and take grabs in defence.

The kid is just 21 not played anywhere near 100 games, been asked to (until this year) in a position that is beyond his years, and in my view done it very well, now with Tippo and Buddy around he will now be given the opportunity to develop his game against the third best defender ect along with roaming,
A) You never trade away mobile key position player, particularly those as mobile as Reid.
B) Big players, requires patience, yes this will test our own sometimes, however the reward will be high.

Longmire commented on it after the game in the press conference. Sounds like Reid will be the new LRT.

I (and many many other on here) have been saying it all along. We need Reid to take over from LRT and last night was a fantastic example of what Reidy can provide as a big mobile unit. I was pretty impressed with his teamwork with Derickx too & thought he really worked hard to provide some added defensive pressure around teh ground when required too. For a guy his size that's a massive plus in my books.

Very happy with his game last night and am hoping for much the same over the coming weeks as Bud, Tip & Goodes have relieved him of being a stay at home forward.

Well said. Some of the impatience and criticism directed at him over the past 2 seasons has pissed me off.

I think he is now playing as a giant go anywhere man, a bit like Justin Westhoff does at Port. The arrival of Tippett and Buddy will be the making of Sam, going to be very valuable from here on, not only for his versatility but for adding to the game day opposition coaching headaches. I'm sure Sam is feeling a sense of relief too and will enjoy his footy much more thereby improving his rate of development.

I'm liking what I'm seeing.

it takes some young talls a while to finish growing and get the body right. Just from his frame you can see he can get bigger without losing is athletitism. Yep, he can fill the swingman role with aplomb, height, speed, and a big tank. Great asset to have, if buddy, Tippo or goodes need a games rest, swing him forward and bring LRT in. I thought his centre square ruck was smart, no jumping into Big Boy or Hale, nah, skip around them, let them jump under it, and tap.:thumbsu:

Was his best game as the swingman role yesterday IMO. Was very clean in the wet for someone at his height and looked alot more confident around the ground. Yes his ruck work isn't great at all but as long as he can provide a contest to nulify his opposition ruckman it will do.
Really liking his versatility atm.
