Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

The Granny is no place to continue his achingly slow development.

I do take your point. But he's been a key part of the way we plan to structure up all year in the best season this club has had in an age. Something is working.

Yeah, why stuff around with a structure that is working beautifully at the moment.

When you have 22 players selected for each game, not all of them are going to star. I'm comfortable with Reid being a bit player if Horse is.
Agreed. Too much emphasis is placed on stats sometimes.

Even if Reid is not having a day out, he still commands a mobile tall matchup...one less tall they can use to sit on buddy or Tippett. Has to stay in the team. Even if he is not clunking marks, he provides a solid target up the ground that helps straighten the team up

what i'm hearing is, "yeah he's a bit crap but he's tall."

surely we can do better

Is that you sir swans ? lol
nah i'm a noob. i'm sure you guys have been over this a thousand times but i just dont see the point of keeping him in the side when there is so much talent trying to force its way in. he's had a crack at it, he hasn't made an impact, they should trade him while we might still get a first round pick, instead of watching him turn into jesse white

We don't have any influence over the match committee, so whichever team you came from, trying to convince us won't change a thing!

I don't think Sam Reid is a potato by any stretch. In fact I nominated him 2 years ago as the player with the most potential on our list, though unlikely to reach it. But he sure as all hell is not worth the 400k+ he is being paid.

Hi, long time listener, first time caller. I felt the need to find out what other people think about Sam Reid. I just don't feel he is good enough and is a passenger on this team, and I don't see the development he seemed to promise a few years ago. He's played plenty of games this year and is kicking under a goal a game, 0.2 goal assists, 1 contested grab and one mark inside 50.
9 of his 19 games this year he has gone goalless, including hawks, geelong, port, hawks, port and our 2 finals. He goes missing in the big games and has not kicked one single goal against a top 4 team. In fact, he's only kicked 5 against the top 8!
I know stats dont tell the whole story but he's shaky in front of goal and appears to be beaten most weeks by the 3rd or 4th defender. Horse reckons his defensive game is pretty good, but he only lays 2.4 tackles (Buddy averages 3.1).
Now that he's under an injury cloud, why would we persist with him? We can push Cunningham (or even McGlynn) up the ground, bring in Mitchell (or god forbid we bring back O'Keefe into the forward line, I'm sure he would do more damage).

Dollars to donuts if they play him in our starting line up, he will try his heart out, get less than 10 disposals, no goals and subbed in the third.
Can anyone explain what I'm missing about this guy and why we go with him every week? The Granny is no place to continue his achingly slow development.

Dont try, you'll get shot down and accused of blasphemy from nutjob tragics who will put you in the 'enemy' crowd for even 'suggesting' we should 'discuss' other 'options'.

I started a new thread to discuss IF we were to make a change what would be considered. It got closed down immediately. If there was ever a week when discussing options was valid you'd think it would be this week, so I've just taken my discussions to other forums where people arent so precious.

Anyway ....the main advantages I see with Reid are
1. He's a flexible swing player who can push forward, back or into the ruck.
2. He's a backup incase a defender or ruckman goes down,
3. And he blocks off long kicks just with his presence up field (makes anyone think twice before kicking long).....but this doesnt really bother Hawthorn imo since they are the league leaders at short and long kicking accuracy.

More advantages below in my old post.

Anyway, IF the changes were to be made they should have started weeks ago, is a little late to roll the dice with a change now unless he is properly injured.

I share your worries though...there is a good chance he will go missing for 2&1/2 qtrs and the team will be too tall and not agile enough when he's around.

All that said, I hope he kicks 5. ;)

Read my old post below if you are interested in what I said a few days ago.

REID
Pros.

1. GF experience. This cant be underrated.
2. He contributes average/above average defensive work
3. He is versatile and can be moved back or forward, much like LRT was. Flexibility is valuable in GFs.
4. He is tall, strong and fast. Good tall option in defense to counter Roughead/Hale.
5. Good marking option coming out of defense and on the wing (but this year his stats are down in this area, not performing like he should imo)

Cons.
1. His stats are consistently in the bottom 2-3 in the team. Goes missing for LONG periods, always has, even before his new roles in defense. His DT and SC scores reflect this - they are low and unimpressive.
http://www.fanfooty.com.au/players/year.php?firstname=Samuel&surname=Reid&year=2014
2. Stats are down significantly the last few weeks, probably due to injury
3. It is probably fair to say his ligament damage is now worse since the injury Friday night. (How many weeks has he been carrying this? Anyone know? My guess is since the hyperextension against Hawthorn in round 18)
4. Arguably we already have enough height in the team
5. This year his marking has not been up to his usual standard of previous years

MITCHELL
Pros.

1. He is a tackling machine. Expect him to be in the top 3 on the ground. I wouldn't be surprised if he pulled another 13 tackles or more. This will leave more important players on their feet more often.
2. He is a clearance machine.

That's it. That is all he would need to do. Nothing crazy, just tackle and clear. Tackle, and Clear.
A third indirect advantage would come from McVeigh dropping back and strengthening our defenses.

McVeigh;
a) reads the play better than Reid
b) is a better kick
c) is better defensively
d) will significantly improve our rebound
e) will match up better against everyone of Hawks offensive players except Roughead and Hale in the air.

This is probably more valuable than Mitchell's input in the middle.

Overall, our defensive line will become significantly more agile and rebound more effectively.

McVeigh wont go missing like Reid....and neither will Mitchell since he'll be at every stoppage.

Overall this equals more pressure around the ground.

Cons.
1. Mitchell's inexperience
2. Slower and smaller than Reid
3. Kicking efficiency is below average.
4. Less potential to kick goals
5. Less defensive pressure
&
6. No McVeigh in the midfield will mean DE from midfield will drop slightly and our inside-50 entries will suffer slightly too.

While I am hesitant to mess with the midfield, winning stoppages through tackles and clearances will be critical (Mitchell), as will countering Hawthorns small forwards (McVeigh). IMO the advantages offered by an injured Reid is less than those offered by these two.

We already have enough height around the ground, and this small change would significantly boost the team's inside pressure, tackles, clearances, defense, and rebound.

Anyway, just my 2 cents. Reid will play imo, but IF I was to make a change, this would be it.

Sigh.

There really are better ways to start a post.

Just stating the truth.

Never have any problems on any other forum. This is the only place where I've found conversations are shut down for expressing an opinion outside the norm. Too many people are way too sensitive here, Bigfooty is renowned for it, it really is beyond a joke.

But this is GF week...lets not fight, haha.

If you don't like Big Footy and have better options to discuss the Swans, by all means take those options up. But don't belittle others here by pretending to act as if your opinion is the only one that counts.

You haven't been stopped from expressing your opinion on here this week, despite what you say. Maybe you can't handle counter opinions???

Thanks Theta, some interesting points. I agree McVeigh provides a better option up front with Mitchell doing his thing at the stoppages.

As you say Reid is useful as a back up ruckman or defender (I'm thinking of the drawn match against Freo) but if that was what Horse wanted, LRT would not have been dropped.

As you say, it looks like they won't change the team but its an interesting proposition. I also hope he kicks 5 and I won't mind the egg on my face, but I'm certain it won't happen.

Ditto.

Still got a hardon for me I see robbie. Never quite got over us getting off on the wrong foot did you?

Like I said, I never have any problems on any other forum, just here.

This is GF week, how about you leave it.

That pretty much voices my opinion on Reid ... in another team he might be given more of a star role, and probably play to it well, but that's not his job with the Swans at the moment, and is why so much criticism of him on this board for the past year or so has been ridiculous. He was particularly effective "playing a role" in the 2012 grand final.

Same here, I dont understand the cricism he has copped this year either, he has played a different role (LRTs swingman role more-or-less) and in many ways he has been great at it (better than LRT imo).

My only concern (and its a small one) is Hawthorn's precision kicking and elite ability to find space. This often left us exposed against them this year and looking a little tall, and to counter that slightly smaller, more-agile players could have helped. If we have weaknesses this weekend this is in my top 3, especially with him carrying an injury (I was also worried about this in 2012, and we ended up subbing mummy. This time we're taller, and they're more agile!).

All things considered I'm not really worried about it this weekend, I think we've got'em covered. Swans by 22.

I suggest you take your own advice, it's GF week, I think we're done with this kind of talk thanks.

i think reid played his best game in ages on the weekend, its not about the stats, but he was taking a mark and moving well, then he got bloody hurt.

Hawthorn are a side he is also more than handy against structurally and i think we got the forward structure right last week so hope he is fit

on the flip side i hope we dont play him unfit...

i expect more than he delivered this season, but thats just me

I hope he makes that call himself.

If he gets a slight knock early we are in trouble

Reid will win you big moments. That late mark in the 2012 GF when the Hawks were pressuring us is a case in point.

Reid and Buddy along with West Coat Josh Kennedy are the best defensive key forward in the AFL. Reid will tackle, smother, come off the line and lock the ball in.

His work as the loose man in defence late in quarters cannot be understated.

This GF may be for Reid, what the 2011 GF was for Tom Hawkins - the moment they took the next step.

With Lake on Tippett and Gibson on Franklin, this could be his time.
