Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

I wouldn't play Reid forward, I'm put him in the gym, bulk him up and play him as the new CHB and push Richards out to the 3rd tall role, or vice-versa. His time as a power forward, or a forward in general has ended. The only time he should play forward from now on is to pinch hit.

I am a big Reid fan but IMO his issues won't be solved by moving him into KPD.
Bucket loads of talent, but dreadfully inconsistent.
It is all mental with him. He needs to get the 'mongrel'. Horse has to remove the kid gloves, the carrot approach will only take you so far, time to bring out the big stick.

It's a combination of injuries, being shifted out because of Franklin, and playing backwards & forwards all the time. He's probably confused and self-conscious when he plays. That's why if you stick him down back and tell him you're our new CHB work on it and we'll play you when we're ready, he'll be better for it. Just work on everything out of the spotlight.

Look i dont care if i get blasted or whatever but this is a nothing role, its nothing you could remove him from the side for most of the home and away season play with 18 men and you would barely notice he was gone.

He offers nothing to the side is going to be 23 has 2 years left on his deal to forge himself a career or else he wont be getting a new deal based on his current output.

Horse develop him as a KPD or trade him simple as that.

If Goodes retires, Reid then has a legitimate 3rd tall role which he can make his own. Another pre season, get a little bigger and he will be valuable for us.

But here's the thing, when he first came on the scene he was playing as 2nd/3rd tall and everyone said "Give him another preseason, he'll get a bit bigger, stronger, fitter and he can take over the role as 1st tall". He then took on that role and everyone said "Give him another preseason, he'll get a bit bigger, stronger, fitter and then he can take on the big gorilla backmen that he now attracts as 1st tall." He then kept getting monstered and everyone said "Give him another preseason, he'll get a bit bigger, stronger, fitter and hopefully we can get another forward in so he doesn't get double-teamed so much". We got Tippett and then everyone said "Give him another preseason, he'll get a bit bigger, stronger, fitter and he will start to monster the smaller defenders that he gets due to Tippett being in the side".

Now with Buddy and Tippett in the forward line and Reid again underperforming, are we really just going to say "Give him another preseason ...... " and expect him to make the difference next year?

I include myself in the "everyone" that wanted to give him another chance after another chance, but I think it's best for both Reid and the club to part ways. Look at his stats - he has completely stagnated (and in some ways gone backwards). I feel he just needs to move somewhere else to rejuvenate his career, because whatever is happening at the Swans for him isn't working at all. It always guts me to say that about a Sydney player (and especially one with as much potential as we all saw early on), but his time is up.

Still think they will play him forward next year.

IF Goodes goes he might see more of it being that genuine 3rd tall.

Time will tell

To be honest, I think Horse should mould Reid into a defender. He could be like Daniel Talia.

How long did it take for Grundy to cement his spot in the back line? I lost count at how many times he was tried forward then back. I've had a lot of time for Reid but my patience is getting very thin. Next year is the year for him. If he shows no improvement, time to trade.

Reid would be good trade fodder, Sydney should definitely see what the market is like, but may have to pay some of his wage as I understand he may be slightly overpaid.
Don't think he's overpaid just got a lengthy contract, wouldn't be surprised if it was front loaded as we didn't have too many stars when he signed up

Give him a key defensive post or trade him simple as that. His brother started as a forward in 07 and didn't make any impact until moved to defense in 2010. This ridiculous role he has had this year has seen him play everywhere. I really believe he could make a great defender, he's not gonna be any good on big forwards like hawkins but could certainly match it with the athletic ones like n riewoldt.
Even play him in a role similar to maxwell or m Johnson.

I'd trade him. Have been a defender of his for several years but he just doesn't do enough anymore to get a game ahead of a smaller tackling player.

Actually now that I think about it, get Reid out for a small crumbing forward. I don't know who that might be though.

It is McGlynn!

Ben McGlynn is too small to be the extra in & under hard nosed midfielder that we needed in a big GF.

He has played his best consistent football when he came to the club where he kicked many goals.

His best year was this year surely?
