Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

In his first two seasons i was well and truly on the reid hype train. He was marking everything in sight and looked like an inposing figure....has not fired a shot since.

He would be perfect for playing a high roaming centre half forward. He has shown the abilty to be a strong marker and he covers the ground very well. However he cannot find the pill. His best bet now is defence. Red and ted are both failed forwards so he has some good role models

Who will get onto the field more, Tippet or Reid. Their contracts are a fair bit on a per game basis.

Sam just isn't sure where he fits in the team structure, and there's a confidence issue.

I think some people tout him for his size (vertical) and his ability to get around the ground. But he's kind of a middle ground - Too small physically to be imposing and not quite quick enough to lay tackles or compete with midfielders.

Get him off the weightwatchers, give him a gallon of milk to drink every day, and send him back. Don't think we can accommodate him in the forward structure.

i think there's definitely confidence issues with him.

you wouldnt rely on Reid to bring you back into the game on the big stage. i don't really see him as anything more than a role player who can chip in. not a champion who will put you on front.

there's still time, but im just not sure he'll get to the level where he justifies the early hype placed on him

He won't work as a forward anymore I don't think. Maybe to just try something mid game. If he can be a good backman, it will help salvage his career. If he can stay fit

I Will give Reid one out, his role has shifted a hell of a lot

Didnt help halls swans career ended early, but almost became the main forward after being a potential defender or swingman then we have him and goodes and win a flag, but then we get tippett then franklin

Now he may go back he may not

Give the kid a spot imho down back and let him go for a year he has skills but no confidence or presence

Membrey showed more aggression and presence than reid last year and he only played once

i wonder how membrey felt seeing Reid continue to get games and not getting a look in himself.

i know he had things to work on himself, but as a youngster you just want an.opportunity to prove yourself.

the swans just weren't the right fit for him in the end

There was simply no place for Membrey he went down the pecking order behind Towers and with Goodes playing on and Reid being persisted with it was a no brainer on his part to save his career otherwise he would of just been delisted this year (3rd year as a rookie).

Are the Swans the right fit for Reid? do you see Reid finishing his career in the red and white?

Frustrating he could of been a good fit if given a go

There was a spot last year for Membrey

Possibly mate but perhaps the club didn't play him knowing full well he wanted out?

Do you think Reid will finish at our club?

dont know career defining year
Could become a good backman

Or float around as a hack forward and fade out of afl

I think he just struggles to get into good positions or doesn't have enough match awareness, struggles to play with other fowards there is Synergy and understanding with Buddy and Tippett i just don't see that with Reid.

2015 he just played like crap lets face it but for some reason he is gifted games and a big contract on glimpses

He should of gone back to the reserves last year membrey should of played

Maybe it would of made reid

But he seems guaranteed a spot unlike others

The contract was one of the biggest blunders fair play to his manager how he managed to get him a 5yr 500k deal.

At the time he was starting his career fairly well, iffy kick at goal but his marks were brilliant and getting 7+ a game. At the time he was well worth the money to lock up his potential. He was the future of our forwadline.

Then he never progressed, seemed to lose his ability to mark and with the introduction of Tippett and Franklin into the team never really had a place anymore. Not worth the price now, but meh, win some lose some.

Maybe, may be not. I'm hoping that he still comes good. However, I seem to remember that at the time there was almost universal praise from Swans Bigfooty posters that we'd managed to lock in a budding superstar and keep him away from the evil grasp of Eddie. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

He was well on his way to looking like a star in 2011, even 2012 looked like an absolute gun in the 1st half in round 2 against Freo..was tearing Mcpharlin to shreds but did his shoulder just before half time and hasn't been quite the same since. His back-half of 2012 was decent with a few standout games(couldn't expect too much more from a 20yr old playing as the number one forward) 31 goals that season was a good return.

Just hasn't progressed from there, had a few games here and there (e.g Carlton, Gold Coast) last year where he looked back at the level (coincidently he was playing as more of a main target in those games). Hopefully he's just a case of a KP player taking time, needs a defined role though..probably in the backline, they like him as a forward but it's probably his last chance as one..if he doesn't impact when up forward this year he needs to become a permanent defender. I think he can make it in that role and would like to see him there straight away. He seems to be following a similar career path as Grundy & Richards...and let's be honest a lot of KD play down there because they don't have enough of an impact up forward.

I don't think he is a permanent defender and don't believe that he can make it in that role as it carries a lot of risk. Doesn't read it better than his opponent and can get bodied out a bit. I feel that his leap and grab suits the forward role better. He seems to be a victim off not wanting to get in the way of two forwards who should demand the footy. Therefore he is playing second fiddle and a contributor. He also has a pretty decent offsider in Goodes. Naturally the thought then is he goes to the defence to add some much needed height. It makes sense and perfect world would solve some matchup problems. He may be a little surplus to requirements. I would like to see him get a forward role but follow the ruck man after the bounce and encourage our ruck to get forward when needed but not have to worry too much about the defensive side as we have reid who is playing the role on the likes of Hale. Just a thought for certain teams.

i think Reids importance to the team will increase when goodes hangs up the boots.

atm we have 3 quality talls, so reid is surplus. however, if he spends time down.back and learns the leading patterns of other forwards from the opposite side he may be in a better position when moved back forward.

once goodes is gone, he'd become an important asset to cover injuries and stretch the opposition defence as the 3rd tall (which he has done at times).

if he's serviceable down.back then he could turn into a good swingman who can also provide a marking target along the wings.

i think 2015 will be a great year for him to settle into a defensive role and just work on his game.

my only concern is that we're pretty set for talls at both ends, so he could find himself in that makeshift role he's been.occupying for the last couple of years.

and given how his progress has stagnated, i think he'd benefit from being given a position to focus on for the season.

Very different players though.

Biggest issue holding Membrey back would be his athleticism and height (Although I still think he would have made it with us).

Reid needs to get moved to defence (Was an better defender than forward as a junior from limited playing time (Had previously been an midfielder)).
