Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

yeah, talls can often take a while to get going.

i remember Hawkins was looking like a dud for a while and people were questioning whether his presence in junior footy would translate into the afl, and then seemingly overnight he turned into a beast.

exactly! most people were wondering whether it was just a charmed run and whether he'd revert to his previous form.

but nope, he continued on that level eber since.

it was if he discovered he was capable at that point and like you said, never looked back.

alternatively, he was challenged from within the club and really stepped up to the mark.

slightly different situation to reid as he was given the key forward position to make his own. Reid has missed that boat, but it's time he really grabbed his opportunity with both hands and earn his place in the team without leaving any doubt whether he belongs.

career defining year for him

Defence experiment already failed i don't think he even made body contact with Cameron lol.

Unless buddy and tippett are both out i wouldnt pick him

But they will

The deal made sense at the time. He was marking everything in sight and looked amazing for a kid of his age. There would have been big offers from other clubs.

Yeah, in hindsight not a great move but at the time there weren't too many complaining.

He kicked that bag that one time and got us a draw on the siren that other time so, runs on the board and all that.

Its not even about the pay right now for me, its about earning your spot in the side, reid does stuff all and gets a game week after week

I still think he'll come good, but maybe a stint in the NEAFL to get his confidence back, make him earn his spot in the side as you suggest? Ted was dropped in 2010 (?) and so was Mal in 2012. Sometimes it doesn't do a player any harm.

Exactly

Give him a spot i still think back and go perform in that spot in the ressies and if you show form you get a chance

He is not doing the club or himself any good at the moment

Just my view

Overall do i think he can make it? Im not sure i used to think so, he can take a good mark, his kicking is suspect, he does not read the play well and he hangs back too much, he has pace for a big guy and pretty quick hands

Confidence player who to me looks like he is hoping to play well rather than believing he will

Man on Man against Cameron he went badly, that isn't totally unexpected or surprising, but when he played as the loose man across half back the Giants players were always in two minds in how to proceed forward as he presented the danger of the chop off mark. If used that way he'll work out, but not as a man on man defender unless he is given time to work into that role which is time he doesn't have.

Personally I would play Laidler in Round 1 as his kicks out of defence provide more early on than Reid as a tall loose defender. He can learn than in the NEAFL for a few weeks to get his confidence up and see how he goes.

He does probably need to earn his spot, wasn't amazing today but at least he was involved a little bit (as far as raw stats go, I know some of his kicks were shocking), 11 disposals, 8 marks and a few spoils for a key defender is much better than returning 8 disposals, 2 marks and no goals as a forward.

Worth persisting with, partially because we don't have a better option atm. Ideally he probably would/does need to earn his spot through the ressies, but if we come up against a team with a tall forward line - again we probably don't have another option - unless Laidler can start punching above his weight (which he probably could do from time to time, but I wouldn't think we'd get away with that as a permanent option). Likewise if Buddy or Tippett go down, we probably don't have another forward option either (not sold on the idea playing a 'true' ruckman in that role).

Was his first 'real' game of the season, everyone else played crap in theirs so I guess he's allowed to as well....hopefully he can grow into the role over the early portion of the season. Huge year for him though, needs to make it at one end of the ground. Looks like he'll get gifted games to try and do it in too, because lets face it XR didn't show anything to say he's a better option and the fact that none of Davis, Allir or McLaren played probably means the coaches think they're even further behind.
