Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

He basically played loose defender today though not key
Don't even think he knows , he got out bodied like he does as forward and turned it over with dicky little kicks. I agree 100% he seriously needs to go back to the 2s , don't care about this role playing bullshit horse pulls , its all bullshit. he was shit last year and held his spot

Yeh its just putting the team on paper and going oh no we are a bit short reid is tall put him in

Bugger it id rather see some undersized player like laidler having a crack than reid hanging back bobbing around

Barely played a decent full game in his career so far

People keep saying oh hawkins came good. Well hawkins was already good by this age and showed way more earlier

Man on Man against Cameron he went badly, that isn't totally unexpected or surprising, but when he played as the loose man across half back the Giants players were always in two minds in how to proceed forward as he presented the danger of the chop off mark. If used that way he'll work out, but not as a man on man defender unless he is given time to work into that role which is time he doesn't have.

Personally I would play Laidler in Round 1 as his kicks out of defence provide more early on than Reid as a tall loose defender. He can learn than in the NEAFL for a few weeks to get his confidence up and see how he goes.

Yes just the way to let him bludge his way through the rest of his contract and then piss off to Collingwood.
He has no intensity or urgency about him what so ever so letting him bludge across half back will not make him a players arseh*le. 3 times under no pressure he hit the opposition lace up. **** him I'm sick of talking about him. Pity his magnet off the whiteboard doesn't ******* go missing as often as he does. The armchair ride he gets from Longmire is embarrassing.

Yer Membrey and co must of been shaking their hands at how much opportunity Reid got compared to him.

We need a tall option in the backline, and he's the best on offer. Would you rather XR or Aliir, who we know are not ready? He had some bad turnovers today but he'll get roasted on the game review for them, and he'll improve.

He's fine, just give him time to settle in. He's still young and if he gets the injury-free season he needs, could still be the player we all hoped he could.

Reid needs the Pyke memo forwarded to him. Don't kick, just look to handball it to the nearest player. Just some shocking exit kicks for an AFL level player.

Didn't mind him playing on Cameron, he got schooled on how a forward should actually play. Hope he took some notes.

Spot on. Maybe a simple approach to it but Membrey probably finds himself at a club that is and will be in the mire for the next few years because of the armchair ride Reid has had.
Drop Reid and give Membrey 4-5 weeks to show his wares and all of a sudden career flourishes with his natural talent being helped along by playing in a good team with good players.
Now at St Kilda where list is young and developing and as a whole very weak team can only see his career stagnate imo.

Yes, Reid has been a costly investment so far all things being equal. Simple way to look at it but never the less should not be dismissed.

How anyone can put headlines together and come up with a player's salary is beyond me. Can't recall any direct quotes attributing the salary component of his current contract.

Like any young AFL player with inconsistent skills but with the physical attributes of a KPP, he would be paid market rate.

I for one am not saying he is on an inflated salary but he does have a long contract that from a salary aspect all adds up. Actually I don't know why I posted what I posted last or why I am responding to your post with due respect. After stating I was sick of talking about Reid I am still ranting so I will bale out now. Not worth losing any more of my wig over.

Point is i will be scared if we have Reid making decisions from the backline, i think his confidence after today will be even lower :/

You've watched Leo Barry, Tadgh Kennelly, Marty Mattner, Reg Grundy, Andrew Dunkley, Lewis Roberts Thompson, Rhys Shaw all these years and you're scared of Reid's disposal?

I was making a general point about references to his contract $ throughout this thread (and elsewhere), apologies if you thought I was responding specifically to yours.

The 5 year term of his contract, which is public knowledge, is IMO a reflection on the coaching staff's recognition that he will need that time to fulfill his potential as a KPP. Maybe they aren't now sure if it will be forward or back, or even both, but my reasoning stands. I would also state his one percenters have been more consistent than the rest of his game during his injury plagued career so far. But the Swans game plan should be able to absorb that.

Our salary cap/list management is as good as anyone and I trust those in the know not to be pissing our money up the wall. Reid's contract, IMO, would have been a very calculated, long term, decision. We don't offer 5 year deals to many 19 year olds (at the time). Heeney will probably be the next.

I am certainly an outlier here.

I thought he was fine through the NAB. Last game did some good things. Grundy'ed up a few things. Got beat by a gun forward one out a couple of times, failed to combine with Laidler on a gun forward on another.

All learning experiences.

Having been jonesing (pun intended) for some footy I have watched a lot last years games and while he seemed a bit between a quasi midfielder and forward of last resort on occasions he was lost a bit on the field but did some really good stuff, some of it exceptional. It was as if the coaches seemed to be unsure of what he supposed to do so never really told him and he was making it up as he went along.

Far from a lost cause, but maybe a luxury or surplus to needs in the forward line, I reckon he is earning his pay because big guys just get paid more and if he is given a defined role back or forward, or simply told he will be the swingman, he will go a lot better.

I agree.
With an aging back line, Reid is the man to take us forward and has the attributes to be a great success. I would put him back as the third tall at Laidlers expense.

Our Achilles heel last year were 4 talls up front. Reid can play back and let Towers and Rohan carve the forward line up.

Reid has a lot of potential as a key player & has the ability to play in many positions.

That's why the swans love him and want to keep him. The swans have a few 'older' players on there list and when (for example) Goodes retires then Reid will be able to work as a power forward. If Grundy retires, Sydney can use Reid as a tall defender. If Pyke retires, swans can turn Reid into a ruckman.

The swans won't lock him into a position until he is really needed. At the moment swans have depth in all positions, hence Reid will not be used as a key position player. Because of his talent and ability he can still be played around ground. His time as a key position player will come, but until then he will continue to play his current role.

OK. Just to make things absolutely clear, we welcome ALL opinions on this board, whether they involve criticism or not. If you disagree with Reid's current role in the team, that's your right, but if you prefer to back Horse's judgement, that's your right too.

You will see that some posts have been deleted, not because the opinions that they expressed were right or wrong, but because they could be seen as bagging other posters. Now let's return to topic, and if you have any questions, please feel free to take them up with us via PM, NOT here.

Reid has not shown he could adequately cover any of those positions.

I believe in reids talent and physical abilities however i think he lacks mongrel. He just doesnt have any aggression about him. He is big enough to hold his own against any player klin the league, yet consistantly gets pushed around by smaller players.

If he had mglynn's heart he would be one hell of a player

Reid is obviously seen as a long term project. The potential payoff is huge but it involves developing him to play both both ends. For better or worse the money is a sunk cost. It's now just a matter of waiting. Worst nightmare would be we develop him for 5 years and he comes good in his 6th with another club.

There's a big question mark on Kurt Tippett's fitness, so Sam is cover for KT.

Tomahawk always knew he was going to be at FF. Does Sam know what position he'll play from week to week. It can't help.

But if he needs to go back to the ressies then he should go, otherwise it's really bad for team morale.
