Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Reid gets too much criticism. He is tracking slightly ahead Jesse White despite being 4 years younger

So we can ship him off to Collingwood lol

Really unfair on the last quarter performance.

Had a few contests where despite being outnumbered kept the ball in while the cavalry came. I thought he was pretty clean off the ground too late.

Cooney got him one on one once when a good kick to the advantage side came in - most defenders one on one would be in trouble with a kick like that. For context remember Smith to Tippett in the last quarter when it was kicked to the advantage side and despite being mauled, because of the kick, Tippett was able to mark and eventually goal after the blood rule thingy with Ted.

That is the art of delivery which we lack on so many occasions. I can't burn him on that. Reid was excellent in the last quarter. As for the first three quarters you can burn 3/4's of the team even Parker who got hands on it but butchered the thing so often.
Reid was outworked by Cooney, he was just lucky Cooney dropped an easy mark then tried to initiate high contact.

I was never so happy seeing a player traded as when we got rid of him (though I'd admit I was over the moon when Barlow was shipped). And he hasn't let me down one bit since going to the Pies. Sucked in Eddie, still two seasons to go.

Vezpremi must have been close and to think we could have had Rioli...just grrrrrrr

Oh please don't, I was having a nice day until now...

Nothing a tequilla won't fix!

White was a shocker though, pity as everything is there, it is all up in the brain with him.

And the heart I suspect...

Unfortunately not the first or the last player. Every side has this really talented player that just seems to coast along doing 'enough' as he would put it

Bruest? Who did we get instead of him?

To be fair no one expected Bruest to be that good. Blind Freddy knew Rioli was the most talented kid to come out of NT for years.

Rioli had question marks over his ability to adjust

Besides we luckily got veszpremi

Well yeah it was a blunder. No point harping on it though, it is in the past.

Have you seen some of the players that we've given up over the years, or passed up? In the grand scheme of things it didn't really matter. The club has built itself a successful longevity model and ensures that there's always a competitive team playing, without ever having to make up the numbers. Go back 10 years and no one gave the Swans a chance, even Demetriou had a crack, and to his credit he had a point because we were awful in some of those games.

How things have changed. 4 grand finals, 2 wins, finals series every year except 2009, a bunch of semis and 1 prelim. Only Geelong and Hawthorn have been better in the same time. But then again, we can become the best team of the lot this year if we win the GF (3 from 5 compared to Hawks 3 from 5 and Cats 3 from 4, but more finals success).

Yep won more finals than hawthorn and equal with the cats

Equalise the flags and ill go claim we are better on the main board, cant wait

Got a guy called Goodes with a throw away junk pick as well.

Swings and roundabouts and all that. Kid called Parker at 40 odd (I think) looking ok.

Can't win them all unfortunately. Think of how good Richmond potentially could have been with a few picks here or there done differently or even that basket case Roos is getting paid a squillion to fix.

Had we won the last GF we'd have been on top of Hawks as the most successful team of the last decade. Just one game separates us & Hawks over the last 10 years and, as has been said, we still have more finals in the bag.

Back on Reid, based on his output he is gifted games and sometimes I don't like it but I can see the reasoning. The future of our team will depend to a great extent on developing depth to cover our tall forwards and backs. If that depth can also fill as 2nd ruck, all the better. With the trading ban in place we couldn't cover the positions we might have so we're stuck with this gamble. He's a very big gamble though. We'd better hope it pays off
