Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

I know most people are thrilled with his game v hawks. I thought he dropped plenty of marks. The number of times the commentators said "Reid did well" after dropping marks I lost count of. I dont rate him still.
May drop a mark but if he brings it to ground and makes it somewhat of a contest that leads to a stoppage or us getting clear, or at least stops their momentum, he is doing a good job. Wish he kicked that goal still though. Also took 9 marks

Reids a confidence player, at present the guys confidence is back..i am worried when he loses as everything falls apart.

So good to see him perform this way though.

All those uncontested marks that he dropped? Cuz it was such a low pressure game against poor opposition?

Sure he dropped some marks, but it was a hot game and he did many other good things.

He took a few very good ones as well.

Bump...

Have noticed Reid copping it a bit on the board, and I can't help but think perceptions of him suffer from recency bias. He played in a premiership side as a 20-year-old CHF, and you can't say that about anyone else in our current squad. He has what it takes, though he has been inconsistent since 2012. I do get the criticism of his big contract, but perhaps that was more to scare off rival clubs, as well as the fact that he plays in a position where our depth is relatively weak, so he is worth more to us (remember, value is a relative concept).

Agree. I love watching reid play. His only obstacle is his confidence himself, physically has all the tools and i believe last year was his best at afl level and became a very important player

Bit of a victim of circumstance.

Was grooming to be a true CHF and probably the #1 forward for the Swans. Then gets replaced twice in two years while also being injured, and with no clear idea on what Reid's role would be.

Funnily enough I think Reid and Tippett was one of our best forward combinations in a long time at the end of last year.

Very much this

Whenever he looked to click or get the ball rolling so to speak, he got injured.

This year could be make or break sadly.

Assuming he's fit, to have someone with the ability to play both forward and back depending on match-ups is potentially a huge advantage. IF Buddy plays more up the ground and Talia can hold a spot in the backline then Tippett/Reid is a combination we might see more of. Still a lot of hypotheticals though.

Far to injury prone , what's he averaged a year since debuting ?

19 games a season (excluding debut season where he only played round 23)

His injuries have coincided with the pointy end of the year 2 out of the past 3, the other him and few mates didn't turn up on GF day.

This year he has a few position obstacles out of the way with exiting players. His body will be the only excuse. When he is on he is a gun, just got to be more consistent and there when it counts.

16.33

But consider

2010 - 1 game (debut came in the last game of his first season on the list)
2011 - 23 games (late withdrawal with "soreness" in Rd24, played the first final the next week)
2012 - 22 games (missed Rd 19 & 20 with a knee injury and held out of Rd23 with a "glute", played the first final the next week)
2013 - 10 games (missed 4 games with a quad injury come back and re-injured the same quad and missed the rest of the season only long term injury to date)
2014 - 20 games (missed Rd 3,4 & 5 with an Achilles injury, was named as the Emergency in Round 6 and was a late withdrawal in Rd 22 with a hip, played the next week)
2015 - 22 games (was a late withdrawal in Round 5 with a "calf" played the next week and missed the Semi Final due to a Hamstring)

So I wouldn't say he is as injury prone as he is made out to be. 2013 was the worst year due to his quad, but other than that we have got at least 20 games a year out of him except for his first year when he didn't debut until the last round

That hole finals campaign he didn't get near it
Freo , north , gf

Reidy has so much talent but seems pretty soft at times and when he's down on confidence doesnt seem to want the pill at all.
Remember when he went beast mode against Fremantle in round 4?

Or in the port game when he stood up without tippo and franklin with 3 goals?

Looks so good drifting in using his height and his great set of hands @ ~ 1:42

Wish these were the norm. He needs to start really hunting and demanding the ball
