Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft

Yeah played 2 great games v rubbish, looked ok in final and got hurt

This discussion came from this idea he is a vital missing cog, I just dont see it, shit id love to be wrong

Undeniably gives us something structurally.

Not a world beater, but definitely improves team as a whole when fit and playing a role

Structurally we could have used a player of his type this year at times, ie when Heeney started getting shut out of games.

I'd take him over Towers personally, rate his footy smarts much higher.

We could use a player of the potential Reid has shown I would agree

I have liked Towers form though and feel like he and rohan are working well , so right now i wouldnt put reid in

XR has done his job also

A player whose attributes and contribution play a greater than normal role in our team's success.

I agree

But no one way in hell is that Sam Reid in my view, that is a guy like Buddy , Tippett, Kennedy, Rampe, Ablett, Fyfe, Danger

Replace the Richards boys have been doing with Reid and you'll see. Then imagine the opposition is Hawthorn on Grand Final Day.

If he comes here and proves me wrong ill be happy as larry

But i suspect hawthorn would see no difference between XR and Reid really

Reid harrasses. He chases. He keeps his feet. If he doesn't mark he brings the ball to his feet or to the advantage of runners. He is a reasonably accurate field kick and kick for goal. He gets back and helps in defence, taking marks in the last line. He gets across the ground forcing the break up of the opposition defence.

We could really use his contested marking ability up forward right now. Would be straight into the side for XR.
Is he out of contract at the end of this year? If so then it is a bit of a conundrum because he is not worth 300K a year because of his body but you could see some other clubs throwing money at him. I'm almost leaning towards the idea of trading him just because it's difficult to build a team around a KPF who never plays.

You watching the same guy, last ill say on it because its just bashing him, but i have seen him miss from the goal square ffs and go games barely touching it. He rarely goes into defence

The guys gets credit for a few moments and people ignore the games where he may as well not show up

He is a good mark when on, but often mis reads the ball

He just has never been that good, glimpses of what he could be sure, but either hurt or missing, its annoying

I think Reid is the great unknown. He looked so promising in 11 and 12, however the recruitment of Tippett and Franklin coupled with Goodes continuing to play as a permanent forward really stagnated his career. The irony is that this could have been his year he would have played full forward all season with buddy further up the ground and tippo spending the majority of the time in the ruck.

I doubt we'll see him again this year. He's taking up 500k in salary cap next season, is he worth keeping or trade him and free up cap space for Mitchell? We'd likely only get a second rounder for him. Or theres plan B where we keep him for another year, probably lose Mitchell, hope he's injury free and kicks 50 goals as a permanent forward which he is capable of. He is then of course a free agent and may leave anyway.

A few weeks ago we had a forward line consisting of Ted Richards, Dean Towers, cooked McGlynn and Callum Sinclair, and people are seriously suggesting Sam Reid wouldnt improve that lineup?

Dunno about that personally
But not like we have seen his form either way

If all were fit id bring laidler and tippett in for nankervis and xr
Laidler is a defender who was replaced by Aliir. Not sure why bring in Laidler for XR who is playing forward?
Unless your suggesting Laidler plays as a tall forward option? Can't say I've seen his form as a tall forward. I think you pick players to play their position.
Alternatively if your suggesting Laidler replace Nankervis as the second ruck that makes sense.

I'm still a big fan of Sammy and if he was fit, would walk straight back into the 22, no question. Although Towers and Richards have done what's been asked of them, Reid would be a big upgrade on either of them in both roles (link-up wingman or leading forward, respectively). Plus he has a habit of taking strong defensive marks at the end of quarters.

He won't play in 2016, but he'll be back next year and will prove all the haters to be fools.

Which defender are you axing? Aliir, Smith, Mills, Grundy, Rampe or McVeigh? Laidler was dropped after the Dogs game in round 15 so his form has been average.

This is unrelated to the Reid thread, but Laidler comes in for Harry Cunningham. Underrated player is young Jeremy.

Reid a gun lols

Seriously like saying white was a gun when he played for us

He is no better than Jessie
Gotta disagree with you there Punts. White was dropping regulation chest marks and missing easy shots at goal. Reid was clunking heavily contested marks...and then missing easy shots at goal. ;) Just kidding.

Reid hit excellent form at the end of last season before he was injured. He wasn't impacting the scoreboard as much as he should but his lead up work on the wing was always so valuable for us. Imagine if we had him dragging a tall defender out and marking then turning for the forward 50 entry, Buddy roaming the 50 arc and Tippett leading up out of the square. That would be awesome.

With Tippett going into the ruck and Goodes retiring, Reid was finally going to find a place in the team other than being a swingman. At the ripe old age of 24. Hopefully he gets a full pre season coming up. Prefer him with us than against us.
