Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Premierships are not the measure of a player. They're a function of timing and luck, being at the right club at the right time while being of AFL standard.

Even the greatest forward in history, Gary Ablett Snr, can't win a premiership on his own. It makes him no less of a player, just as Mooney is no better for having been at the same club at a better time.

I'm sorry but that is complete garbage. Sure, they are not the sole measure of a player, but a player doesn't play in a flag if he's no good, and he certainly doesn't hold the sole key position forward post in a Premiership win if he's no good.

That also makes good sense! You're actually making the same argument, yet creating one while you're at it!

I didn't say he was no good, you're deliberately misrepresenting it to suit your argument. It sure as hell doesn't make him better than the key forward in the losing side (Franklin/Roughead) and it doesn't make him better than the key forward in the team that won the wooden spoon that year (Jeremy Cameron).

Not every player in a premiership side is a star - they were in the best fit 22 at their club at the time. No more, no less.

Reid is so underrated on here. If he played for another club people would say he is star with bad luck on the injury front I bet!

'Don't necessarily agree Ted but As usual you have responded to a fellow poster with a reply of Decorum. Maybe those who continuously reply with " That is rubbish" or "That is garbage " should take a leaf out of your book. Maybe these people are the ones who clearly have no idea when they try to prove a point with such responses instead of accusing others of not having a clue. I'm no angel as I can give as good as I get when needed but I never start out that way. Opening a post with that is garbage or rubbish is weak as piss.

Well give us a break, I'm having the same argument with 5 different people in 5 different ways.

You've changed a comparison with Jesse White to a comparison with Franklin/Roughead/Cameron.

What he said was garbage especially in the context of the previous posts. Don't get offended, Swansfan51 and I get on fine. I highly doubt that he is offended at my calling a post of his garbage.

I'm still a big fan of Sammy and if he was fit, would walk straight back into the 22, no question. Although Towers and Richards have done what's been asked of them, Reid would be a big upgrade on either of them in both roles (link-up wingman or leading forward, respectively). Plus he has a habit of taking strong defensive marks at the end of quarters.

He won't play in 2016, but he'll be back next year and will prove all the haters to be fools.

If you believe any poster on here who dares critique Reid on his output actually hates him or any Swans Player for that matter if the cap fits put it firmly on your head because that would make you the fool. Different opinions don't make people haters or fools, they just don't satisfy your thoughts. Reid is an over payed under achieving injury prone disappointment for the ability he possesses. Get Over It.

Not that you give a flying **** Bruce but I quite enjoy reading your posts because you make a lot of sense but it is a shit opening to a post and an can be taken as if the person you are replying to is a dill. Your a better poster than that. Precious on my behalf ? Maybe but until I get pricked I try and be as respectful as I can when replying to a poster outside of my weekend meltdowns about player or team. Each to their own though I suppose.

Reid was not the man in that forward line

Mate plenty of ordinary/rubbish players have won flags

Aaron Keating
Paul Bevan

I stand by it. The argument was garbage. The statement I was responding to was "Premierships are not the measure of a player." When I referred to "Premierships" I was referring to the comparison between Reid and White. Swansfan51 is not in any sense a garbage poster. It wasn't personal in any way. But you can't simply look at a Reid v White comparison where Reid wins then point out Gary Ablett Senior.

Sorry. I've reworded my last sentence for you from:

He won't play in 2016, but he'll be back next year and will prove all the haters to be fools.

To:

In my completely unqualified opinion as someone with a keen interest in the team, but no insight into the inner workings of the club's coaching and recruiting staff, I think that he won't play in 2016, but will be kept on the list and make it back into the 22 next year and will provide enough evidence to his detractors on this board to sway them towards an opinion similar to mine that he is very good and very important member of our team.

Better? Not as concise, sure, but I think you're right that it is much less confrontational. Although, let's be honest, "haters" and "fools" aren't particularly biting comments. I'm not sure I'm the one that needs to get over it ...

Fwiw Reid is a better footballer than White hands down and I'm not having 2 bob each way here so I will say Reid is still a disappointment imo.

And I completely stand by the argument that Premierships are not and never will be the measure of a player. If Sam Reid had played for us at any time between 1934 and 2004 then he would not be a Premiership player, and if Hawthorn had some mediocre forward in last year's GF instead of Jarryd Roughead then that player would be a Premiership player just like Ryan Schoenmakers.

You can't rate Sam Reid higher because he was at the Swans in 2012 instead of 2002. If you want to argue his merits against Jesse White then I have absolutely no problem with that, but don't attempt to do so with the statement that one has a premiership and one doesn't.

That's a good point, and I guess I was treating the comparison between the two with the contempt I considered it deserved.

That said, it's chicken and egg. I don't believe we could have made the Grand Final, let alone win it, in 2012 without Reid (or if we had had White in Reid's place). But of course we'd have been better placed with a Brereton, Ablett, or a Lockett.

And by the same token, I consider that we would be better placed with Reid this year then either of the Richards boys, although I'm pleased to see XR come on this season.

I highly doubt Hawthorn would have won last year without Roughead.

No doubt I am certainly guilty of spur of the moment frustration & hit the "Post Reply" button with too much blood having rushed to my head, instead of chilling out before doing such an idiotic thing. At the end of the day we all love the Swans in our own way. I prefer to not write people off as I've said before. It just feels good if & when they come through.

I just don't like to over complicate things. Worry about what can be done as we stand now.
We have a certain amount of players on our list in 2016. We had the same amount of players in 2015 & will have the same amount in 2017 but the make up is different every year. A percentage of that list will not play senior AFL football in any one year. Some because of injury & others because they aren't quite ready or simply just aren't good enough in our system. So every year we have a portion of players that many (not I) crudely consider list cloggers!
In 2015 Harry Marsh could have been considered such a player. So he was delisted only then to be picked up as a rookie. Lo & behold, we have a problem with our depth defensively so he gets an upgrade & then gets a game & does his job, because he has been taught our system.

Now in 2016, Sam Reid has fallen into that percentage of players that might not play due to injury. Right now, there isn't too much we can do about it other than hopefully rehabilitate his body to a point where he can a) get on the ground & then b)stay injury free while playing the role his coaches ask of him.
There are 4 rounds to go & 4 weeks of finals should we need them to go all the way. Much can happen between now & GF day.
We need every player on our list no matter what their capacity is because even if Reid isn't right to go until Prelim Final, we may need to call on him.

What happens next year is actually irrelevant right now. We are a good club & we would never burn off a player such as Reid if we have a role for him.
Should he wish to be traded in 2017 like others before him, then we would do our best to get the right deal for both parties.
Potential is why we have persevered with him through injury & potential is what will get a trade done should he wish to move on but I don't think that we would get a lot for him which is why I say we just keep him a Swan if he so wishes.

I really hope Sammy can get back on the park and have a big say in the finals as he will be our X factor. But if not, we have just blooded another player (Xav Richards) with a similar skill set who I think will be pretty hard to match up on in the finals. I'm talking about his height, pace, agility and very good lead up marking ability. Sure, he probably won't take too many big contested grabs in a pack but we don't want to bomb it in anyway. I reckon he'd be ideal on the wing (good outlet from defence) or high forward. Due to lack of senior experience we don't know whether he'll fire in the finals, but one things for sure....................He only needs half as many chances as Reid to impact the scoreboard because he's a much better kick for goal. Have been impressed by him since he came into the side.

Structurally we are so much better when we play three tall forwards and that third tall plays as a swingman further up the ground. Allows Buddy and the resting ruckman to play closer to goal.

X Richards has shown a bit playing that role, but we would be far more dangerous and capable of winning a premiership this year if Reid was fit and playing that role now.

On another note I can recall Reid saving atlesst two games by either marking or spoiling in defence late in games, what might have been if he was playing in either the dogs or Hawks games this year.

It was all in your imagination & I suggest you keep such things quiet around here so as not to stir up unwanted trouble!;)
