Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

yeah I remember how rubbish Buddy was at 25
Buddy kicked more goals in 2008 (at the age of 21) than Sam has in his entire career

Oh the messiah has spoken, what relevance does that useless stat actually prove?

Most pro Sam Reid people on here are just saying he will improve our structure and is a better player than Jesse white.

Of course buddy kicked more goals in 08 than Reid has in his career. Buddy is a once in a generation player who spent that whole season at ff in a premiership team. Reid has spent his whole career other than 2011 and 12 as spare parts man or 4th string forward.

Ump free kick. Sliding in the argument. This started out with a comparison between Reid and White . There was an absurd argument that White was as good as Reid. To back that up we now have comparisons of Reid to Rampe and Buddy being put forward. WTF

Reid is better than Richards. Can we at least agree on that. He might not be the best since sliced bread but he's a big in/upgrade for us.

Seriously..... he's a threat in a pack marking situation, name another one of our forwards you'd back in that situation. He's got a good tank, will present all day long and his delivery into the forward line is better than quite a few of our midfielders. What ever your thoughts on him he will distort defensive structures and have to be respected with a good defender.

If you have Buddy and Reid on the move and taking defenders then surely someone has to profit. If we sit a ruck down there at times then I can see Hayward or Dawson making a 'Papley' type impact on our team this year.

Since Jessie was traded to collingwood Reid has never had a better season then White by any possible metric.

Injury prone? wait a sec in the leave Sam alone comments I was told he averages 20 games a season? how much more durable can he be? But then if he is injury riddled then that is a massive issue so if the Reid lovers can let me know which he is that would be great.

He does not touch the ball in a lot of positions so yes on that basis he can play a variety of spots equally effectively I guess.

The rest is just your hope and opinion, I get that, I hope Reid knocks White out of the park as a player but it has not happened yet and up to this point on the Lower salary White is better value.

The age thing, well I hope we do not apply that rule to Dean Towers or he is in trouble.

This is a massive year for the bloke, no excuses he has a full pre season (unless he gets hurt again) a spot to waltz back into and coming into his peak, I cannot wait for him to rip the comp apart
Did you notice he was injured through all of 2016. Prior to that he had a good run.

Are you just being funny or are you genuinely confused ? Try playing the post and not the man. I'm not a 'Reid lover' , though I suggest you've got something against him. I'm realistic in thinking that he can contribute more than he has so far. He was a better player than Jesse in 2015 and still learning the game (4 years younger). Dean Towers is not being discussed here. It's not a rule, it's a fact. Players tend to peak in their late 20s (see recent Brownlow winners). Reid has had a year out in 2016. Prior to that he was showing good form end of 2015. He should have plenty of upside at his age given improvements in 2015.

I am saying his output has not justified his continued selection, but the AFL loves a tall player, he is not the first to be hyped up by any club.

It is an opinion, so are you saying anyone who has an opinion on here that is contrary to what seems to be the clubs view then they are claiming to be the almighty?

I think the fact that with this key member playing 0 games we made a grand final says it all.

But as I said time will tell.

Let me pose is this way if he plays every game this year matching his exact current average output for the year would that be a good result?

'Says it all' ? This 'key member' played almost all of 2012. We made a GF and guess what ? We won. Uniformed posts like this won't have people thinking you're the Almighty, quite the opposite.

I will help you. Jesse would have dropped this or punched it through for a behind. Sam's future is probably in defence.

I remember that well. Sitting right nearby and thinking "How can this not go through ?" when Reid threw out those long arms and took that huge mark. I've never suffered such a mixture of relief and frustration at the same time. Here was a hero in a team of goats. We lost what when should have won but drew when we should have lost.

Last time I seen Reid play one on one in defence was against McCarthy in the pre season and he got beaten

Played on westoff at AO and didn't do to bad but his one on one body work is average at best

Rampe is 7cm shorter and would mop the floor with Reid
So far you've compared Reid with a bunch of the AFL's best forwards then against an All-Australian. No-one's claiming Reid is a champion of the game. Besides, Rampe would mop the floor with just about anyone.

What 'dumb' stuff does Reid do? He's had some fairly crucial involvements at the back end of tight games over the years that a 'dumb' footballer wouldn't be capable of. There's a reason he is rated so highly within the four walls of the club, and also a reason that Jesse White found himself playing a fair chunk of reserves footy for a bottom 6 team with an American import playing ahead of him, both of these reasons go deeper than a stats sheet.
Agree with you. White was a bullocking idiot who had a few good games, covered himself in tatts then had his ego pumped by a few deluded fans as the next white Goodes. Meanwhile he ran in all the wrong directions (including onto the field when he wasn't supposed to be), got lost in the change rooms and gave away frees every chance he got.

Apart from Punts and I Sam Reid does not suffer from any of that he is the super duper all australian worthy premiership winning centre half forward who is as young as a newborn and ready to explode, can play any position and tore the comp apart before his recent injury

In other words....

Disagree. http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/...pid2=3381&fid1=P&fopt1=2015&fid2=P&fopt2=2015

In summary, many of us think Reid is better than White, has even more potential and will add to our team this year. A couple think he's shit because he's not as good as Buddy or some of the very best forwards in the comp and could be beaten by an All-Australian defender.

Lol a bullocking idiot with eerily similar output to Reid, not much hope for Sam if that is the case

I think people are forgetting that Reid did other things than that one mark on the goal line. An upgrade on Richards or White is debateable, I havent forgotten lead upon lead up to the wing that Reid would drop a simple chest mark. He's an attacking momentum killer. Rather Hayward if he's almost ready to play.

Bad comparison mate!

I think Sam Reid seems to be becoming a worse player by the day simply because he hasn't played for ages.

The boy can play, not up to the standard of Buddy true, but name anyone that can.

Comparing output per talent

Buddy had already become a great

I agree Reid has the tools to be a very good player but he was no where near his level at the same age

Anyway its become Reid bashing

I am just tired of the hype and the excuses

If he was at another club people would be bagging him out

He is out overrated tall player as it stands
Hope I am wrong but i suspect he wont do much more
