Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

Sounds like he had an alright game, but if his set shot kicking continues to be poor it will really effect him/us. A few games toward the end of 2015 he got off to a good start, but didn't take advantage and we struggled because of it.

Always been a problem for him though.

IIRC he got his rising star nomination in a game where he kicked 2.5.

Hopefully it was a heat thing today. /excuses

Ive always found it strange cause he has a reasonably good kicking technique, he just seems to aim them badly. Its not like he shanks like travis cloke or levi casboult

Start in the neafl then?

You might not like it but he is a critical part of things if we are going to get better than last year!

Just as AJ would be if he was fit!

The AFL team lists are littered with players that haven't been able to get on the park.

I agree, Reid always had his yips but his presence on the field makes us a better team. As long as he can stay on the park he can improve. He can take a mark, contested or otherwise, better than most, and often they're crucial ones.

I think that XR was definitely professional enough to prepare and play as best he could. It certainly wasn't his fault that the midfield went to shit in the 2nd half, we were sacrificed by the shocking poor umpiring and overrun.

He did some ok things and he did some shitty things, like having the distinct inability to look like a professional footballer in the first quarter.

I don't know what Reid would have done other than stretch the defence, but with Richards playing with wet soap and Franklin hobbled from the outset, perhaps his inclusion should have happened.

Lets not forget the elephant in the room - McVeigh

I just want to see Reid play a whole season, injury free and backed up with a full pre-season. If the coaches can sort out the positioning for Reid, Buddy, Tippet and have the right guys barking at their feet then I think Reid will make a nice contribution. He's a mobile big man who should cause problems, let alone for anyone thinking to zone off him to contain Buddy.

Having Jones, Mills and Heeney going through the midfield, covers Mitchell's loss and frees up Kizza to play forward. KJ's dangerous inside 50 and will add some leadership and organisation forward. Get the structures right and fit players on the park and we are looking good.

Reid will also play his 100th game this week alongside Rampe.

Hopefully we get more of what he produced last match this week!

Or without Rampe as now seems likely. It feels like he's taken much longer than Dane to get to the milestone though!
