Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

Not at all, he is too talented to be the guy making space for buddy

Whoa so you actually do rate him then? Mind blown.

I don't think there's necessarily anything wrong with being the guy making space for Buddy, it's a team game after all, if you're fortunate enough to have one of the all time greats in your forward line and he's firing, you give the guy some space so he doesn't have to beat 3 opponents. Reid will still have days where he kicks bags of 3-4 goals like he did against Port.

Done to death, but realistically, should Reid just head down back and shore up the defence? The guy is a really good mark, decent speed, not the best kick at goal, but generally a good kick around the ground. IMO I think he would benefit from having a set position rather than being thrown here, there and everywhere.

He has talent and has not performed to that talent, people around here overrate his output and he seems to be the one player we dont question on the board or you are a hater.

I disagree with that being a role sorry, and i cannot see how that is fulfilling. I think he is making space is just a cop out for a poor game too often when it comes to Reid.

He's a good forward. Would much rather we just keep him there but he is handy to swing in defense when needed

Sammy rates #1 for Sydney as unfulfilled potential.

Or maybe his potential is fulfilled and what we see of him physically and performance wise every 8th game, is a big tease...
Constantly re-assuring ourselves that this was his breakout game, a prelude to greater performance to come..

And then... the following week he goes missing. He is listed on the team sheet, and we catch occasional camera glimpses of him, yet the question is asked "where was Sammy Reid?"

Perhaps there could be some Swans themed books along the lines of 'Where's Wally'.

Can you find Sammy on the field? Where is he hiding? Is he in the stands eating a pie? Or on the wing taking some selfies with supporters?

I wouldn't go as far to say he's been fantastic, but he was good in the first two rounds
Too bad our midfield are so buddy centric that they dont look for other options

Do yourself a favour and watch just how often he stays involved in contests and effects outcomes in those contests favourable to the Swans. Too often he is judged by the classic mark/goal criteria. I'd like him to take more marks too, but there are very few who do take the big marks consistently who also affect contests like Reid on the ground. He's a gem and I wish they'd get him signed.

Article on afl.com suggesting tigers and pies interested. Could attract an offer of 800k per season! Surely we cant match that if it happens.

$800k? Jesus christ!

That's probably enough to get us Band 1 lol.

Oh please make it so. If he is to go Band 1 nice

If he goes it won't be disastrous. He's good to have he's playing that mark-up target on the wing/HHF and, as has been discussed, creating space for Buddy.

But IMO we aren't any better when he's doing all of those things. Buddy kicked over 80 goals last year, we averaged over 100 points, and made a GF all in a year without Reid. He is not the be all that ends all. If he goes, we'll hardly notice his absence. If he stays and performs, it's a good thing to have. If he stays and continues to underperform, he's taking a spot in the 22.

You're right but the problem is, he's quite literally our only contested marking option. We are already terrible in that area. Granted he's not elite in contested marking but he's still better than anyone else on the list.

Tippett is supposed to be the other one but we all know how he goes in that regard.

If we lowered our eyes more often instead of these lofty kicks that go 5k's in the air and take 30530241425.02 seconds to reach the target, the need for a contested mark would not be so crucial.

I try not to buy into any media reports of 'offers' and 'done deals'. Most are rubbish or rumours from people who know people who know people.

Especially this early in the season.

I'd be disappointed to see him go, as I think he is an important cog in the team. But if he's going to be offered something around the $800k mark per season by a Melbourne club, I don't think the Swans would try to match that. And if he gets that, good on him!

That being said, I'm not convinced that 2017 is over for us yet, so having him fit and firing is essential.

Would it be facetious to point out that we made and won a GF with Reid and not Buddy in the team?
