Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

I like him, yes we all want him to become a truly dominant key forward but he is still an important player. We missed him at times last year.

One of the best key position players below the knees as well. He is very good at trapping or picking the ball up off the ground for his height.
He's one of a handful of players in our team who seem to get judged on supporter expectations rather than his actual output. People need to let go of the idea of him ever becoming a dominant forward and just accept him as a valuable role player. He's a great mark, fantastic below his knees and at releasing the ball by hand. And unlike some other big men he puts in some great 2nd and 3rd efforts and isn't completely useless once the ball hits the ground. How anyone could complain about his game yesterday is beyond me.

Wasnt the worst today, But was pretty much ineffective. Wait a few more games and he will be due a good game. Just hope he times them nicely and turns up in a final. Dont want him dropped. But hes not the star people seem to make out him to be, Solid enough role player
And he is not as bad as some make him out to be. I thought he had an effective game yesterday.

Tell you what: Buddy or Riewoldt or Cameron or Kennedy or whoever aren't flying over the back of a pack in our defensive 50 and punching that ball over the boundary with a minute left.

And he still had his 2 goals (and should've had at least 3 with the chances he gave himself)

And he took the mark and made the right call to pass to Kennedy in the 4th.

Apart from Buddy, we don't have any other AFL standard key forwards and none of our rucks are clunking marks or kicking goals.

Reid is a must keep.

If he hasn't resigned at this point I'd say we should all expect him to leave. Someone will give him a big offer and we won't be able to match unless we can somehow trade Tippett. Either way I'm not sure we should match. Reid has one elite talent (marking) but even then it's too easy to stop.

No, if he hasn't re-signed within two weeks of the new player payment agreement being released then I will assume he's gone, and I'll be devastated. I believe Reid is one of our most valuable players and would be a walk up start in ANY other team in the comp.

You must have missed the memo about Tippet have re-signed until 2020...AFL standard key forward as much as Reid is

Or maybe that was why we re-signed Tippett until 2020...knowing Reid would be leaving

Well, Sammy has played 2 good games in a row

Usually that does him for the next 4-6 weeks and he shuts up shop, greases up his mitts with butter and changes shoes for a slow jogging comfy pair of Crocs.

It's times like these it's difficult to know if he is playing forward or back or if he is on the field

I am hoping, hoping hard, I am wrong about my mate Sammy R. I am hoping that this week he bucks the trend and takes 10 contested marks and lays some tackles and kicks some goals and gain 400 metres.
I am hoping, but not expecting...

Tippett is struggling to have an impact in the NEAFL (when he is not injured). Reid is a must keep ....

Huh? The last two rounds in NEAFL:

- 39 hitouts, 20 disposals, 6 marks, 5 tackles, kicked 0.3
- 28 hitouts, 21 disposals, 9 marks, 5 tackles, kicked 3.2

How is that possibly struggling to have an impact?

If I was Horse I'd be looking at that "marks" number and wanting 10 plus. He's very capable of taking contested marks but doesn't present often enough and with enough purpose at senior level. I'm not a basher. I think our best 22 still has him at Full Forward. But too often he seems to find himself betwixt and between the play and that's simply a factor of presentation. He's not the same ground level player that Reid is so he doesn't have the luxury of being able to get credits in that area. If he's not effective in the air, he's not effective.

He gets moved around a lot by Horse

His stats don't reflect his importance

Jack Watts gets moved around a lot at Melbourne.
McGovern gets moved around a lot at West Coast.
Tom Boyd gets moved around a lot at Bulldogs.
Burgoyne, Roughead, Gunston & Breust get moved around a lot by the team I'm not allowed to mention on here.

It's 2017 & the game has changed Blacky & players need to be versatile & able to plug holes when the game asks them to.
Especially if they believe they are worth around 600K plus!

Did you even read what I said?

I said don't look at his stats for his importance. I didn't pass any comments on his or anyone else's versatility.

Horse's first move basically every week is to send him down back. He was Free down there late in Q4 and was important while not hitting the stat sheet

I will take 15 disposals, 10 marks, 2 goals and 4th for 1%s every game for a 2nd/3rd tall. For another 7-8 years.

What do you want! Their last games

J Riewoldt 15D, 8M, 2G
J Darling 14D, 7M, 2G
J Waite 9D, 2M, 1G
B Brown 8D, 4M, 1G
J Bruce 11D, 7M, 2G
N Riewoldt 21D, 11M, 0G
C Dixon 16D, 6M, 1G
T Lynch 10D, 1M, 0G
L Casboult 13D, 8M, 0G
J Stringer 13D, 3M, 0G
J Watts 16D, 6M, 3G
T Walker 18D, 7M, 3G

No perfect players anywhere.
