Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

If he maintains that standard he'll kick 130 goals in a season! Tonight was one out of the bag but he's quite good every week IMO, just that some on here aren't satisfied unless he on track for that 130.

Building a side that is very strong in the air, just need more class in the midfield, pity pick 1 has now gone south, to the Crows!

They weren’t mediocre. His critics are simply ignorant.
I Like sam reid when he is taking pack marks, kicking snags, and confident enough to banana from the pocket. Tonight he was fantastic.

Not providing versatility, creating space, etc. He needs to kick goals to justify his wage and contract
Ignoring nearly 130 games worth of data for one performance is ignorant

Agreed on your first point as Ronke is certainly testimony supporting it..

Regarding 2nd point there have been plenty of quotes on this forum writing Sam off and wishing he never gets chosen to play in 1sts again. It would be desirable for more consistency with Sam and injuries have certainly played their part throughout his career. He was out of touch earlier this season however has been building nicely over the past few weeks.

I think we all share your wishes for point 3 in that Sam backs up tonights performance with a few more dominant games. He was brilliant tonight and shows what he can bring to the team both forward and in the ruck when Sinclair was being dominated by Grundy.
Absolutely mate, not here to start a fight!
Just think it's too early for anyone to begin questioning those critical of reid for years

I don’t mind criticism mate. The incessant bagging of Reid in recent times has gone well beyond criticism and there’s been an absolute refusal by some to even acknowledge that he makes any sort of contribution. Even when you reference for them the passages of play.

So I say if you’re going to be so mean spirited as to mount a negative campaign against one of your own from behind the protection of anonymity you get what’s coming when your target has a night out.

Is he, or is Ronke just out of form? I’ll go with form. You’re spot on with the rest in my opinion!

Reid's stats compare pretty well with Tom Lynch this year. Not quite as many goals but more contribution around the ground on all fronts. This year he's our best contested mark (8th in the comp just behind Tom Lynch), taken our most marks inside 50 or 2nd most marks inside 50 per game, 2nd best hitouts/game & total hitouts, Equal 2nd most goals, most tackles inside 50.

Reid's far more versatile too. He's a solid defender, a competent ruck, a reliable release mark out of defence, a very good user of the ball, a solid contested mark, our number 2 forward target & draws the number one defender when Buddy's not playing. He crashes packs, he brings the ball to ground and he makes it easier for the youger forwards to learn their stuff. Of course Tom Lynch is a year younger but he also gets paid twice as much. Reid has been unlucky with injury but he can play and consistently gives plenty around the ground, whether he's kicking big scores or not. Most of his possessions and most of his marks are contested yet he's running at 76% DE this year. Against the Pies he took more marks inside 50 than the rest of our team put together.

Most of us don't feel the need to pour s**t on one of our own. It could be that some have a genuine lack of understanding of the game and maybe others are just sheep bleating along to the same tune. Either way it makes the poster look ignorant.

Spot on Bungee. A lot of poorly thought through rubbish written. Some on here just like the sound of their own endless say nothing posts. Having large numbers of posts doesn't elevate your stature, it often means you're saying little of substance.

As for Sam, forget about the contract he's on, that's the club's domain what they pay him. Sam like most players mixes form a little but he's one of our most important players and has been for some time and the club expects him to play multiple roles every week, which he does quite well despite what a small number of posters on here spout.

Reid is nowhere near as consistent as Lynch, Reid has a game or two in a season where he kicks 5 or 6 goals then does nothing for the rest of the season.

He isn't expected to kick 6 everyweek obviously but needs to hit the scoreboard regularly.
Being fair to Reidy it is hard to kick goals from defence though.

Just be here next week when he gets 8 touches and does nothing

One can only go on current form. This year he has been consistently outperforming Lynch in every aspect except a goal a game. Lynch is a pure forward but in almost every other stat Reid is ahead, from inside 50s to hitouts, rebound 50s to tackles in forward 50s. In score involvements they are almost equal. Kicking 6 when Buddy's down in form is exactly what he needs to do. If he backs that up with a goalless game where he does a lot of other work that contributes across the ground then that's fine too. Reid often pops up when no-one else is firing.

Buddy drawing the best defender and doing a lot of unrewarded work made life easier for Reid deserves enormous credit for that

Howe had no chance
Until they moved the best defender onto Reid but Buddy couldn't capitalise. Reid has been pulling the best defender while Buddy's out. That's helped McCartin et al but you give him no credit for that

Hurley took mccartin the week so not really
What Reid didn't have a defender that match ? It takes all our forwards keeping their defender busy or they can get across and affect other contests. If they all play well we win games, even if not all get on the scoreboard. That Collingwood moved their best defender off Buddy and onto Reid speaks volumes.
