Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

He's still our best marking option inside 50 but he's being played all over the ground.

still spent almost 70% of his game time in the forward 50 this year, 22 goals in 16 games , 16 in 15.

He is what he is, durable this year at least,

A good foil for Buddy is what he should be but with Buddy out, Reid is not going to be your star forward.

He's marking the ball but missed a few gettable goals.

Yes he missed some gettable goals, but overall he's been better than expected.

be sad if he is too high seen as his stats basically match roughead this year and hawks are pensioning him off

Ok then, when you compare the averages for the stats which player is which and is The King's claim therefore that outlandish?

Reid is on the left and has significantly more contested marks.

But the reason it’s bullshit is more than that. When Roughead is Forward he stays deep. If Reid stayed deep he’d probably average 3 goals per game. But that isn’t his go. He does long leads up the flanks and wings, dragging tall backs with him. Many of Papley’s goals, for instance, are scored from the vacuum created by Reid’s lead. Blakey too for that matter. And Hayward if he could kick straight.

Roughead’s a great player on the way out because he can no longer cover the ground like ke could or take contested marks like he could. Reid does both and has been exceptional at both, given the way we play, this year.

Moreover, comparing 7 games to 18 games is silly.

Reid has played some decent games this year, with the Pies game the standout. Early part of the year he was slow to get going with missing all of last year a possible impact. However he has improved and worked well with Buddy as the season progressed.

Had quieter games like last week but if the ball is delivered to his feet it’s hard.

Overall can’t deny his efforts not sure he’ll make the top 10 but should be top 15.

It really doesn't matter.
He is our player & hopefully can stay fit & be part of our improving system going forward.
Roughead has nothing to do with us & is part of a team that more recently has gone out in straight sets in consecutive seasons & can't break into a team that sits outside the 8 with 4 rounds to go & that still has some 8 to 10 ageing p'ship players in it & some high rated recruits.

The stats are similar. Still Reid has been more versatile and plays a different role. Roughead is a champ in sharp decline. Reid is a solid B grade player.

Roughead plays forward
Pinch hits in ruck

And even popped into defence

Which is different

Cassboult goes to defence more than Reid so less goals but had a better year

Not even bagging Sam but he is an average player

So a high best and fairest place says a lot about our list really , maybe more about injuries if he passes a few. That’s a big tick for Sammy durability has been his best feature this year

Exactly though Roughead can’t even get a game at that shitty team yet even at his advanced age is matching Reid

Yep very true.
So what do you want the club to do with Reid.
Delist him?

I'm not actually sure what the people on here that bag & compare how "poor" our players are, want from the club. Do you want these players dumped & for us to go back to the draft lottery & find the next hidden star or do you want the club to beg forgiveness for having a crack & getting EVERYTHING wrong?

No one ever wants to leave a big Vic club & every disgruntled player from an interstate team wants to go to a Vic team for even less because they get to "play on the big stage in front of big crowds" or go home. Clarko & Hawthorn don't have to work too hard in player management because they get in the ears of contracted players from other clubs who may have an issue there, be it mental, laziness, or discipline & whisper sweet things to them.

Sam Reid plays for us & John Longmire is our coach for the next 3 or 4 years.
Roughead has been spat out by Clarko yet a team boasting the Brownlow medallist & 10 p'ship players should not have gone out in straight sets two years running, so for all our issues/problems/list mismanagement, we are still at a different stage to the Hawks.
Sam Reid hasn't asked to be compared to Roughy, he is just playing the role asked of him by his club. Doesn't matter what you or I think.

This is the key point and why I think he'll do quite well in the Bob Skilton Medal.

The voting isn't the old "3 lots of 5-1" like in the good old days. 5 coaches are allocated 50 odd votes to distribute amongst the players according to certain criteria which includes how well they played the role set for them.

Many supporters benchmark Reid against Wayne Carey and label him "no good".

And it's true that under the 5-1 system, he probably wouldn't poll well.

But it's not the 5-1 system and to the extent that I am able to watch him, I can see what he is doing and it looks to me that he is playing to instructions. Long hard leads. If he's seen early enough the kick goes to him. If not, there is space behind him for Blakey or Papley to run into. If it's a long bomb to the top of the square, he'll often hold back and allow a Blakey or McCartin or Hayward to take a "less contested" mark in front.

My assessment of Reid is that he more often than not, far more often than not, makes the right decision in his play, and works hard enough in his play to enable the TEAM to have a goal scoring opportunity.
