Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

Like you I am hoping that by the time this lot reach that middle age bracket, there will be more talent and we'll actually get that bang for our buck. I have said that any one of Heeney, Blakey, Rowbottom, Florent, Mills, Dawson and Aliir could be elite and I hope they prove me right. (Imagine if they all did!)

I think Heeney, Blakey, Mills, and Dawson are the guys from that group who I would say have relatively solid chances of being "elite" - which I'm choosing to define as making more than one AA (any definitions of elite are pretty faulty imo but that's kinda how I think about it in my head). Making one AA is like having one great season but then not replicating it - to me you need sustained excellence to be considered "elite".

Rowbottom, Florent and Aliir I think will certainly go on to be very good players but I think will eventually fall beneath that upper echelon in their positions.

All guessing games really, all I listed have got elite attributes but also weaknesses that, if they become too prevalent in their games, will stop them from becoming elite. This is where I really hope Horse and co know what they are doing and get it done, because we haven't had a group with as much natural ability as this before with Horse at the club, so it's a real test for him.

So Horse got us to 3 GFs and played finals every year but one despite never having a playing group with as much natural ability as this one ? It should be a cinch then.

Good timing. Good to see Melican, Franklin and Ronke may also be in the mix.

Reid throws his large body into contests with plenty of tackle inside 50 and one percenters. Watch the Newman goal in the last 2 mins of rd9 2017. Reid's shepherd gives Newman the space to work.

Ive defended Reid for a while now, but even I cant deny that hes pretty cooked. Will be shocked if he is around next year. But it should be his ‘on’ year.. haha yeah pass

I look forward to another one of his 'on' years that produce a whopping 31 goals

Injured again delist him asap waste of a list spot
Presume will/should pull the pin at years end

I have a gripe about posters getting stuck into a scapegoat. Like a lot did to Reg for a while... Teddy too... IMO Reidy cops ridiculous criticism & deserves a defence against what I think are unwarrented attacks based on false premises.

Stats can be misleading, sure. But based on the above he missed 2010, 2016 & 2018 seasons. 2010 as a rookie (so not really "missed") + 2016 & 18 through injury.

That is an avg games of almost 16 games a season even despite "all his injuries"... Taking out the 1 game first/rookie season, he averages 17.75 games. Not bad given how apparently "injury prone" he is.

If you bother to check this avg out against some other players you may note that this isn't actually all that bad.

Further, without writing off 2018/16 he has averaged approx 20 games a season & been a regular inclusion. He was unlucky he copped two significant injury interrupted seasons. Two. Not constantly injured throughout. Not in then out then in then out... Two (out of 10) seasons he was out completely. This impacts a career avg & allows ppl to point at as him being "constantly injured"... Based on the 20 game avg outside of 2 seasons I'd argue this is a false or exagerrated premise.

As for goals/game... where has he been played most of his career? In what role? ... what was that? Swingman? Bit of ruckwork too you say? Oh... I see. 30 goals "in a good season" ... as a part time forward who chops out at ruck &/or swings back to defence? Sharing a forward line (when there) with 2 other pretty key talls in Buddy & Tippett... Goodesy up there too at times. So that goal avg, given these facts, is pretty impressive to me too. What is the problem here? He didn't play exclusively as a fwd & when he did he was 3rd or 4th in line...

So what exactly is the basis again for him being the front of all this criticism?? I just don't get it.

He had some pretty promising early years, so I think many expected a meteoric rise where he was marking everything and kicking 70 goals a season.

Has been a really solid contributor, but if expectations are that high no one will be good enough.

Its also that it feels like he's out whenever we need him, like he times his injuries with the other forwards/back. Obviously this negative bias in our memories.

Its a lot of factors, but why does any player become a scape goat in a team, if they're getting chosen, there's usually a pretty good reason.

- thats actually a fair bit of footy missed, he also played a lot of games where arguably form didnt warrant and also failed to complete many games why are we taking out games, moving goal posts

- he is not paid at a level that fit the stats you think are ok, thats my gripe, he doesnt deliver for the price he costs , he wasnt a swingman most of his career, i think basically you are lowering the bar to the floor so he can clear it

his either is a foil or making space doing nothing, or has not enough help and does nothing

even when playing every game he has never cracked the best and fairest top 10, last year the fact he couldnt do it says it all

he is overpaid and overrated and couldnt even match roughead last year who the hawks pensioned off

he cops stuff all on here too, its mostly praise, theres very few of us with an issue, in fact it's mainly me,

Sam Reid & Clarke are my two favourite players because they piss a few of you off.:tearsofjoy:
Not sure you should be saying the quiet part out loud tbh.

I laughed at that last sentence mate.

Fair enough. I see your points. They make sense. I just disagree.

For any given person involved with the club, when

Lets explain this in another way. If Reid played for any of the other 17 clubs and there was a story that we made a trade offer for him, how would people respond? That gives the answer.
