Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

he didn’t look hugely fir last year.

I think his body looked pretty shot most of last year, too, tbh.

he’s still getting up and down the ground and taking marks on the lead. What’s been really noticeable recently is how easily he’s been losing one-on-one contests. Felt like previously he would halve them.
CD keep that stat, but i don’t know if it’s publicly available

Earlier in his career he had vice like hands when given space to jump at the ball. It doesn’t seem like he can do that much anymore, lost a bit of agility?

We have won a couple of matches since reid come back so I think he still offers the young side a big body and some leadership if nothing else. I wouldn’t consider dropping him now buds gone

I agree. I don't see anyone else being effective in the role. Reid's still had more scoring shots than anyone else against Freo but his goal sense is off. He needs a bag to lift his confidence. The lack of coordination in our forward line has been noticeable. Our forwards need to get out of each other's way. They're too static and bunched together. I think Reid needs to find some voice and tell the other forwards where to go to. Trouble is he's had a career as the 2nd tall.

What a mess of a forward line we have. It's as if Stevie J is the forwards coach, "Just kick the chaos balls to a clump of forwards and let them somehow kick the miracle goals from tight pockets" says Stevie, imparting his experience to our young forwards "Maybe try some bicycle kicks".

Seriously Stevie, sort it out. Reid had 3 or 4 Port defenders on him for most of that game but we kept landing it right on his head. At least give him a chance to run and jump at it. And while you're at it why don't you ask the other forwards to clear the F... out, or maybe even lead ? At least get them to take their man away from the contest so we can get some one on one s, or create other opportunities. Do they even know they're allowed to move around ?

Is Plugger still fit ? Sign him up.

Reid’s second goal was on his own

Watching the replay opposition barely care he is there

reading this thread you would think he had countless defenders dragging him down

he’s done Sadly he is still contracted , but will be injured soon enough anyway

Watch the Port v Sydney game 2020, it was on this Saturday just gone.

Even the commentators talked about it so you couldn't have missed it. At one stage Reid was trying to mark against 4 defenders. How is that allowed to happen ?

Watch that play though, everyone from the half back line was basically in space. Was training drill stuff. Was possibly the easiest goal of Reid's life

its gotten to the point where teams are playing their best KPD on mccartin than on reid

if he cant even be fodder to give mccartin an easier matchup then it isnt worth persiting with reid as a fwd

i dont think delist, he can play in the back 6

So Sammy becomes a life member of the Swans this weekend hey?
Any of you other life members care to share what the benefits are? 😂😂😂

If nothing else, it has been a pleasure to witness the chagrin you’ve inspired here.

Congrats

He's been a good servant for the club but his career has been blighted by injury. Rampe debuted three years later and has played 170 games.

Because he's tall and athletic with a big mark people expect him to be the next power forward but he's not that. Given his kicking for goal, just as well. He's a handy player who can play anywhere and though he's taken a couple of game-saving marked and kicked a few clutch goals has never been a big impact player. His stats show he's average in just about every category, which I guess sums up his career.

Congratulations on his milestone. He's only 28 so he's probably got a couple of seasons left.

Except contested marks where he's ranked 15th in the comp in 2020. He was 6th in 2011 and 10th in 2017. Besides being handy down back and in the ruck Sammy is a big presence inside 50 who throws himself into contests. No surprise then that he was ranked 8th in the AFL for tackles inside 50 in 2019 but also no surprise that as a tall he's had a few injuries.

Comparing Reid (a tall forward) with Rampe (a medium defender) is comparing apples and grapes. For a start, Rampe's 12cm shorter than Reid.

The Reid misses games fable is just that. Of the ten tall and medium talls on our list he ranks 4th best for games played of possible games since debut. In other words, he's missed the 4th fewest games.

Player Height % of games missed

Blakey 195cm 11%
Franklin 199cm 14%
McCartin 193cm 15%
Reid 197cm 36.5%
Sinclair 200cm 37.5%
-------------------------------
Aliir 195cm 42%
Melican 195cm 47%
Brand 198cm 55%
Mclean 197cm 64%
Naismith 206cm 78%

Well done Sammy on 150 games. I hope you play on for 4 or 5 more years and retire a Swans legend, a 250 gamer and 4 time premiership player (2012,2022,2023,2024). Sad that you might miss the Swans 2025 Premiership win, the first played in Beijing.

Sam will be 30 at the end of this year. If he doesn't pick up his form he'll be lucky to get a new contract.

For this I was surprised we didn't sign McCartin. If McCartin joins our reserves team that'll be the writing on the wall IMO
18 clubs passed on P McCartin in last years draft. As lack lustre as Reid’s last few seasons have been I doubt he will be knocked off the perch because of P McCartin.

My point was more, Reid has done himself no favours in getting a new contract. If McCartin is signed for the reserves to me that indicates the Swans are already planning a Reid departure

I hope that we sign Paddy into the East Coast team to give him a chance to prove himself and get match fit. There are plenty of chances to upgrade him if he performs well. If we don't we will be short handed once Reid is delisted or retires. These big guys mainly mature later. Assuming Tom stays at CHB we will only have McLean and McDonald. Not enough.
I would not read (pun intended) too much into it if we sign McCartin the elder.
