Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

UFA still provide compo, we just can't match what is offered
I should have clarified as I meant due to him being UFA it jumps him into an age bracket that inhibits compo. My fault, apologies as I was busy at home. It’s based on age & salary. His salary will not be high imo as clubs will be hesitant when it comes to injury. And he’s 30 in December. It’s not second round pick if that’s what people think. It’ll be nothing or virtually nothing.

I suspect his goalkicking is what's punishing him. Around the ground he plays his role well but misses far too many gettable shots for an experienced key forward. I've already said I think we should try to trade him to ease our salary cap -would rather hang on to the young guys like McLean with a lot of upside. I doubt Reid has more than another season in him.

Could be the best mark, fastest runner, and craziest endurance athlete, but if you can't kick a set shot you can't be a forward.

Sam's a good family man who has put a lot of sweat and tears into this club. If this is the end, I hope he will be treated respectfully by the club and its supporters.

He has also been, over the journey, a very solid player.

Well said, some supporters really enjoy sticking the boot in. Guy helped us win a Premiership. If his time is up so be it. A little bit of respect and a thank you is all that’s needed.

The goal he kicked in the 2012 granny was absolute champagne footy.

Simply never got back to that high half forward role, playing on the run.

I honestly reckon he just gets inside his own head. Every single time he takes a mark you can see it on his face, just paralyzed about what to do with it. When he's playing fluid footy he's at his best.

Just way to many injuries to his body to reach any sort of potential he might of had, i dont know how he is still playing or even how he gets out of bed tbh.

The amount of dedication it must take to get himself up for a game is a feat in itself.

163 games over 12yrs is a fair effort.

Serious question - has anyone ever been on a list for more years while never being top 10 in the B&F?

That is really going to stretch the research room's capacity so before I spend time on it I thought I'd ask.

I'm gonna have a stab and say check the research room for David Mackay

Did the work for you swansfan51 and it was looking really good, but then he snuck into 10th place in 2019 :mad:

Fun fact: if Sam Reid kicked one goal for every post in this thread, he'd have kicked more goals than the combined totals of Franklin, Ablett Sr, Doug Wade and Jesse White.

IMO, he can still make his way into the team. All I want is form to be rewarded, and if he has a few crackers in the reserves and Mclean or Melican have a 1-2 down games I see no reason why he won't be back playing.
I also feel that there is more confidence playing when you've fought your way back into a side, makes a player feel worthy of the role that they are given.

With only one round left before finals it’s difficult to see the return opportunity. If those selected to play this week have stinkers then there is that possibility but it could be a dress rehearsal of sorts this week. Would be a sad way for his Swans career to end if that is the way but that’s football. Personally hoping he is selected for the first final but probably only an outside chance.
