Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

If Amartey can keep playing in the seniors and Reid comes back through the twos hard to see Reid get much of a chance to put his hand up for another contract.
At his best last year he was matching up well with established ruckmen let alone backups and was a reliable mark in the fifty. Looked as mobile as I have remember him playing. Goalkicking was his only real weakness.
Be sad if it ends via injury.

Is it the same injury he brought to the Grand Final? If so, it's been 8 months now, with another two predicted after the bye.

I rate Reid as one of our 10 most valuable players when he's fit and in form. But at this point, I think almost regardless of what he does over the rest of the season we have to cut him and use the salary cap on someone who's body is more reliable.

My waters tell me we are going to figure more prominently in the trade market this off-season.

The news from the Club remains grim.

IMO he may have played his last game for us.

Sam has never come back from injury without delay - please no GF jokes. In this case 7 months on there has been no stated progress.

Is it time to call it and place him on the LTI List? This would allow us entry into the mid season draft.

I think they will wait until the last possible moment. But Mid-season draft picks do have to be given 18 month contracts. There might not be anyone we want to have for next year

Oof used to be 6-18

He's on the wrong side of 30 but he ain't a pensioner just yet. Surgery, year off, properly prepped preseason and he might have one last potentially massive hoorah left in him.
Makes a mockery of the rookie list concept, but it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that he ends up on it.

I was just going to say that myself. Certainly his preparedness to get surgery on an injury that more often than not heals without an operation indicates he hasn't given up yet.

Considering that buddy is done and how young we are

If we don’t get a decent tall in the 25 - 28 age group

We will keep him

Even if we find a tall we might still keep him another year

We have the spare cash and he is a valuable player when fit

If this is it for Sam, and even if it’s not, he deserves a lot more respect and gratitude from the Swans faithful than he’s been getting around here.

Sammy has been a courageous and loyal servant to the Swans ever since he was drafted in 2009. The longest current serving player on the list and the last remnant (along with Parker) of our last great era.

A premiership full forward in just his third year, he has stuck fat with us, even as we then recruited Tippet and Franklin in successive trade periods following the flag - thus pushing him out as the main man in the forward line to the third wheel.

Sam never complained, never sort a trade, never invoked that mysterious go home factor that inflicts so many AFL players. He has played whatever role asked of him over the 14 season journey (and there have been many), has never had a hint of an off field scandal, and always diligently rehabbed to get back time after time despite so many setbacks.

Every soft tissue injury has deflated and frustrated the fan base so much …imagine how it’s been for poor Sam living it each and every time. His body failed him often, and also at the most inopportune times (pies prelim 2022 and freo qualifying final 2015 too brutal egs)

He is the last starting (non-sub) premiership player on our list and if this is the end it’s a deeply sad time to go this way. I was always hoping Sam and Parks to be the LRT, ROK, Jude and Goodsey that bridged the great era’s together with a flag in each. I hope he is rookie listed back and smashes it next year all the way to our 2024 flag but who would know.

Sam is a True Blood and deserves to acknowledged as such
