Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

Sam never complained, never sort a trade, never invoked that mysterious go home factor that inflicts so many AFL players. He has played whatever role asked of him over the 14 season journey (and there have been many), has never had a hint of an off field scandal, and always diligently rehabbed to get back time after time despite so many setbacks.
Never complained? Based on his early participation in a flag team + an affection from Horse, he was placed on a GIGANTIC contract that contributed* to an salary cap squeeze. All the while only playing every odd season due to being made of balsa wood.

Never complained lol.

Yes never complained. A lot of highly paid players have complained over all sorts of things over the course of their career. And Sam has never complained - not when he had a long contract, and also not when he had no contract and had to wait until after the trade period of 2021 ended to be offered one. Never complained!!!

And the gigantic contract (that was more long than gigantic) you speak of was signed well before he was a flag player, making your point above non-sensical dribble…And I feel tinged with nastiness too.

tell me more about non-sensical dribble?

View attachment 1684638

That link is to his four contract signed in 2017. It was an ad on and pay cut to his actual “gigantic” SIX year contract signed in 2011

To refer to a four year contract as gigantic and ignore the higher six year contract entirely is more nonsensical dribble

Will have played 83 games in his last 8 seasons .He admitted Raper had got him to train harder in the off season and attributed his form and absence of calf and soft tissue injuries to working harder.

Had some good games for us but was unreliable health wise and in front of goal.
He made Heeney look like Plugger.

His role in playing in the GF must have been significant. I will never forget that.

The swans have looked after Reid throughout his career and hes been paid well for his services so I don't feel we owe him anything. If anything he'd be wanting to repay the swans investment / faith in him.

He has never been able to hit top form for an extended period due to his injury set backs. He looked to have finally turned the corner last year, but yet again, his body let him down. There hasn't been a point in his career where he hasn't hit form, gotten injured, took time to hit form again, maintain good form for a short period before getting injured again.

There are arguments for keeping him on the list (buddy retiring, tall stocks being low, having the year and a pre season to get back to playing etc.) But I can only see it happening if he's rookied or signs a budget contract (and he'd be crazy not to accept unless he has a more lucrative job offer or another team has cap space to splash on a speculative target).

I think with the profile of our list and our position on the ladder, I can't see any real value in retaining Reid given age and his injury history. And I gave him huge raps last year and was happy to see him in top form and contributing around the ground. It's just time to face facts.

Look I don’t want to go back and forward on this with you, but I’m assuming English isn’t your first language?

That does seem like the type of thing you would assume

Back to Sammy, he signed a six year contract in December 2011 and it ran until end of 2017. He was already signed for the 2012 season but the contract gave him am upgrade on 2012. So a six year contract

Longmire, Reid re-commit to Swans - AFL NSW / ACT

He was still 19 when he signed it not 20 as you quote above. Fox media gets a lot of things wrong and so do you

So... his contract is up at the end of the season and he's just been ruled out for the year through injury.

What happens now? Retire? 1 year extension?
Give him a year I think. When fit, is still a very important player and would be preferred to Amartey or McLean.

I don't tend to buy into the narrative of players "owing" a club. Can't blame guy for signing the contracts put in front of him. It isn't his fault his body hasn't held up. Similarly, the club has done right by him to this point so it becomes a simple business decision here.

That bomb to start the '12 GF was pretty special for a kid to knock through so easily on the biggest stage. What could have been...

I reckon the decision will happen at the end of the trade period... like it did 2 years ago.
Think the decision is up in the air until then
Basically, the Swans need to re-sign Amartey + McLean and find replacements for at least three of Buddy, Paddy, Hickey and Reid
Can we attract players like Himmelberg and TDK and ???
Will the MSD intake work?

He is done

Why bother anyway, been paid a lot , got a premiership medal, what is his motivation to keep running his body into the ground.

Honestly the way our talls are going we're damned either way.

Give him an extra year and he stays injured, waste.
Cut him and all our other talls get injured again, lose games because Heeney is our tallest forward.

I think if we're honest with him and offer him literal bottom dollar + match payments it's worth keeping him on the list juuuust in case

Yeah I kinda agree. I really (sadly) think he's done but he's pretty much gone year on, year off so fingers crossed he's up for another year - he's so damned valuable when he's fit!

2024 is a even year so Reid will play ~20 games its fine!

Not sure the club will be able to give him the year

How can you chance 3 KPP ( both McCartins) that might not play again and that’s not taking into amertys injury history

Its a really bad having so many KPP on the LTI list.

Tommy is signed to 2027!!! potentially disastrous.

Its Sunday evening and im in a shit mood

If Tommy can't go on, everyone will be civilised, we'll come to a settlement with him and get him off the list and reduce the hit to our cap. If he chooses to retire, then we won't have to pay him.

Given that six delistings were announced today and that Sam Reid wasn't one of them, it's beginning to look like he might stay on.

As things stand (and if all the expected deals go through), we've 10 players going out and six coming in, leaving 4 list spots open* to be filled via the ND/RD, which seems feasible but wouldn't be surprised if we free up another spot. If Reid gets delisted too, then there will be another spot available. Alternatively, two other spots that are unclear are the spots currently occupied by Magor and Edwards. I wonder whether they will be retained? I think Magor will. At least they have survived the first cull.

*Incidentally, for those who are wondering how I'm counting:

Ten outs: Buddy, Paddy, Hick, Stephens + the six announced today (Clarke, Gould, Rankin, Sheather, Owen & HHK)
Six ins: Arnold, Buller, Grundy, Jordon, Adams, Hamling

No way he is going imo

wouldn't let a premiership player go to no fanfare etc , he must want to stay and they must be waiting on cap room etc to determine the deal?

Yep. Wicks will stay for sure. Two years ago Reid was the last contract tabled and it looks as if history might be repeated. Edwards is definitely worth another year and Magor has had some development invested into him.
Looks like a pretty quiet draft.

So assuming Sam gets another contract what sort of provisos do you think it should include?

IMO it should be minimum chips with match payments (seniors and Ressies) to determine the bulk of the package. Thoughts on other stipulations? Successful set shots for goal should also feature, with financial penalties for misses inside 30 metres.

Not sure why we would put extra pressure on him. I doubt any manager would be accepting penalties like that in a contract anyway.

Just give him a basic 1 year contract on below average money. No triggers or penalties or rewards.
