Was actually my Wedding Day!
From a family of Carlton and Essendon tragics there were transistors and ear pieces scattered through the congregation and plenty of hand gestures signaling two goals up, three goals up!!

Our driver said he’d seen plenty of things take place in the back of a wedding car but never a couple listening to the footy! Can’t say the bride didn’t know what she was getting into!

The blues scarf features in many of the wedding photos and it was proudly flapping out the wedding car window as we made our way down Punt Rd to the reception venue. Every Blues fan driving the other way was on the horn acknowledging in celebration.
Great memories!!

Amazing day, was there. We went fully prepared to lose to them but wanting to fly the flag and be a proud, loyal supporter no matter what. Then as the game went on there became an emerging thought, a growing belief we could actually do this. Then we did....what joy. Was there with wife (a collingwood who sung the song with us) brother and dad, team hug, then phone call to sister in Dublin working, we all teared up sharing a unique moment together. A treasured family memory we regularly retell and embellish.

Back to the Cricketers Arms making friends with everyone!
Happy days.
And shout out to Lance who played out of his skin, best talented suburban footballer ever.

I remember being with my dad and the game not being live on TV (pretty common in those days from memory). Dad insisted we watch the and not listen to it live.
Anyway I went into another room and caught the last part of the game, still remember jumping around like an absolute dill when the siren went. Then watched it all on TV, I'll never forget that tackle..happy days!

'Carlton is into the grand final!'

Was there. What a glorious day.

Old rivals in a true David and Goliath matchup.

* finished atop the ladder, a game clear. We finished home and away in 6th. Then go on to lose first week of finals by 73 points to Brisbane. We didn't deserve to even make the prelim, let alone win it.

* should have wrapped this one up early, but couldn't kick straight in front of goal. They smashed us in Q3 and looked ready to run away with the game.

Then Kouta happened. It was like there were 2 or 3 of him on the field. Big marks up forward (that one on the goal line!), a couple of goals, then some massive D50 grabs. He did it all.

We retook the lead but it felt only a matter of time before * ran over us. Lance kicked a huge goal, I thought it was over when Mercuri dribbled the ball towards goal. The last two min were just repeat * forward entries. We were in front but I felt we were going to lose somehow.

Wallis gets the ball in the middle and it appears are hopes are dashed. In comes with Fraser Brown with the tackle of the century. 30 seconds later we achieve the unthinkable.

Siren goes, I jump out of my seat. Screaming, hugging anyone withing reach.

There is a reason we all still talk about this 20 years later. What an upset, what a game, what a quarter by Kouta. 1 point, 1 fricken point.... Just football perfection.

Not only a famous victory for Carlton, but we also denied * what seemed like a guaranteed flag. I think of this match more often than 95 GF. That's how special this game was. I almost still can't believe we won. Amazing.

My favourite football memory. Can't wait for the current team to relegate it to 2nd place, maybe even third....

Other than the 95 grand final, this was my favourite game I've ever been to.
After we won, I remember me and my four mates from Cricket found ourselves in a group outside the Essendon change rooms shouting "Get ****ed Essendon, get ****ed" over and over for what seemed like an hour!

Not very mature looking back, but I suppose being in my 20's with a skin full allows for these situations to occur. 😆

The thing is my mates and I were all from in and around Moonee Ponds/Ascot Vale, the heart of Bombers territory and as Carlton supporters, we copped our fair share of flack growing up.

The funniest part of the chant was Jo Bailey walking past and being dragged in. She was cracking up laughing and really took it in good spirit! Lol..

Headline in the bottom left of the back page reads, Dean Wallis - “probably should have handballed”.

And probably learnt how to use Microsoft EXCEL as well.

:p

He knows full well......CTRL+A, delete....

This was a game we had no possible way of winning but we did. The fact that we beat a team that was so dominant and were our greatest enemy - sorry Collingwood you lost that title some time ago - made the win so much more satisfying than any other win that I could ever remember.

I remember thinking and saying at the time that I don't even care whether we win the grand final the next week because the win was so mercurial that it didn't even matter. It was as good as any grand final win - and it meant that our opposition didn't even make it to the grand final that EVERYONE was sure had already been won by them because they were such a sure thing. Seems crazy to have been thinking that way but at the time it was the way I was thinking.

Best game of footy I have been to, and I was there. Even have the ticket at home to prove it
I sat up top of Ponsford stand with my son who was 4 years old then.

Son told his Mum," Dad was high 5ing all these people at the end of game and he didn't even know them."

Glad Murphy did not take shot after siren.

To beat Essendon by 1 point, nothing more sweet

Love the memories, love the recollections and it's a wonderful day...

But lets bury it and move on now. Time to create a new watershed moment.
we could win the next 3 flags, that game ain't going nowhere.......

It needs to. Enjoy it, recall it fondly, but we need to stop talking about it.
we don't actually - it hasn't made us weaker - it has had little affect on our drive to succeed - I'll wager it does more to stoke the fires of animosity toward * than 68 - it's not considered our greatest achievement and doesn't come close to 95 - it wasn't supposed to happen and no-one thought it would, myself included, but it did and plenty of people there and watching and listening around the country said it was the best, most exciting game they'd ever experienced - so take your 'cast' whatever that is and learn to read a room - I for one will be talking about it as long as I live.

As amazing as it was, it is a bit like St Kilda celebrating the streak. Ultimately it all counted for nothing as the team was comfortably beaten the next week.
we all know what happened the following week - you do understand the concept of anniversaries?
