20 years to the day people! and what a better way to celebrate it by having a premiership this year making everything feel good atm.

Collingwood 13.11.89
Essendon 5.11.41

6th October 1990
Attendance 98,944

Who went to it?
What did you do after?
I'm sure you all partied harder while some of you were in your prime :p
Is the 2010 premiership a better feeling? :)
etc.

Post some memories of that famous day

I was 9, I went to the game with my old man.

My old man actually played for Essendon in the 70's (2 games) but remained a rapid Pies fan. He got his tix from the Bombers and we sat with a bunch of other Bombers ex players etc. Both of us in Black & White.

I remember after the game, standing in a queue a mile long for the payphone. When we got to the front, Dad rang my Mum to come and get me.

I asked: "Dad, why are you getting Mum to come and pick me up?"

Dad: "Because I'm not going to be home til Tuesday at the earliest son!"

I looked back at the queue and it was full of blokes with their kids, getting someone to come and pick them up so they could celebrate!

Loving the fact that we have more AFL flags than Carlton now.. ;)
1990 was great as a youngen, 2010 was great as an adult! Hoping for some more great ones in years to come

Wrapped up the celebrations on the Monday afternoon. I think i just got over my hangover this afternoon. The ol' victory cigar was an absolute treat at the end of the day. Great times.

Best weekend in all my time.

Was only ten, but was pretty stoked. Obviously didn't really understand how long 32 years was back then, or imagine that another 20 could be so long. Loved the guys from that team - got The Age commemorative booklet they put out the following weekend with pictures, Tony Shaw's finals diary, and short biogs of all the players and must have read it 100 times.

I was lucky enough to be there Front row.

I remember the Collingwood crowd refused to believe we'd won til Doug Barwick snapped a goal midway through the last. Then a really slow version of 'Good Old Collingwood Forever' started to ring out around the ground til the final siren. Spine tingling.

I was 16 at the time and my main memories of that day were the crazy scenes on Johnston St that night. The traffic was blocked for hours, people were trapped in their cars as Collingwood supporters just went mental.

There was certainly no thoughts of the official Grand final parties being 'Dry' back in 1990.

Cars could not move forwards or back, and supporters were climbing all over the cars jumping up and down on them, singing, caving in the roofs and bonnets. I'll always remember the people in side the cars holding up magpie scarves against the windows hoping that they would be left alone but it didn't help much. Later the crowd turned on a big police van or armourguard truck ( forget which) and tried to rock it on to its side. Went very close until the police broke it up.

It seemed to go all night and into the next day at Vic park. The partying was certainly a lot more crazy than this time around, but the drought had been 32 years with 8 GF losses in between so people were pretty excited to say the least.

There is a small example on youtube below but really doesn't capture the full mania.

i was lucky enough to be in the back row, top deck - of the essendon section.

lucky cos i got a ticket.

as far as partying - wanted to, desperately wanted to, but the day was just so exhausting mentally that i decided to go home, rest up, and go the next day to party.

bugger me.

slept for 16 hours and missed the whole thing. oh well.

yesterday i sms'd or emailed every essendon supporter i know with the words SGT PEPPER SAYS HI

yes they figured it out. and i got the reactions i wanted hehehehehe.

this is probably stupid and a bit anal retentive...but it really annoyed me that many media outlets went with the headline '20 years...and one week'...when most pies fans (and any journalist/sub-editor with half a brain) would have known the 1990 premiership happened a week into october...

as i said...stupid...but it annoyed me...the stupidity of people who get paid to be intelligent in regards to football annoys me in general (such as radio hosts asking about the trade value of certain players, only for them to be told by callers that they'd retired 2 days earlier!)
