Well with the 2001 footy season nearly over, it's time for reflection. This would have to be the worst footy season I have encountered as a
supporter since 1985 when Don Haddow was coach of South Fremantle. Every single team I followed ended the season on a heart wrenching low.
Over the summer I will be purchasing a book on common superstitions and will not be tempting fate in any way, shape or form.
It wasn't all doom and gloom though. Here is a few of the moments that make it worthg watching footy........
1) Winnie Abrahams tackle in which he does his knee. Less than 3.012224666 seconds on the field from the interchange saw Winnie the Roo launch a
tackle on Hird that is deemed illegal and Hird is given a free kick while Winnie clutches his knee. This all happened in one fluid motion.
2) Sydney host Freo at the SCG and the game is the standard of an under eights match. Whilst not wanting to single out any person in particular as
everyone was to blame, I feel that Shaun McManus' semi underground punt should be recognised.
He delightfully gets a handball whilst running past a pack and then streams like a guided trout towards the forward line. With the barest of glimpses at his leading target he drops the ball lovingly onto his boot but unfortunately his foot gets distracted and the ball hits the ground.
Realising that it should be kicking the ball, his foot tries to make up for lost ground and fails dismally. The ball is now making it's way back heavenward as his boot sinks into soft Sydney turf. Even in error he exudes an air of hard-done-byness.
3) Tony Liberatore leaping into the arms of his fellow Bulldogs as they celebrate the goal which is then deemed a point.....oh wait a minute that was a few seasons ago but it still makes me laugh, hee hee heee...
