From what I have heard, Essendon plays in Brisbane in Round 1, and in Round 7 and 22 are both the WA and SA derbies.

Round 22 sounds smart. SA & WA derbies, Bris v Sydney, and the melbourne teams amongst themselves. No one can complain about travel before the finals then.

Yeah, that's exactly why, so the WA and SA clubs don't have to travel the week prior to the finals starting.

We should have a thread where everyone tries to predict what their club's draw is, and then see who gets closest. I don't think it would be that difficult actually.

Can we plese for gods sake play Collingwood twice next season as we're being robbed of a win by only playing them once!! :D

The last time we played Collingwood twice in a season was back in 1995.

Go Cats!!

Except either Brisbane or Sydney...

Sydney will have 3 home games at Stade de Oz next season - against Essendon, Carlton & Collingwood. They'll also have an away game against the Bulldogs at the SCG, but no Kangaroos home game against the Swans in Sydney next year.
Anzac Day will be a Friday next season, and as well as the Essendon v Collingwood game at the MCG during the day, there will also be a Sydney v Melbourne game at the SCG that night.
The draw will be released next Saturday.

I'd rather that Port play one of their Melbourne games in Round 22 than a Showdown, preferably at the MCG. Good finals warm up, and not as likely to be a complete drain before the real stuff.

You're confident.

What reason would I have to not be confident of making the finals next year?

Demetriou pledges fan-friendly fixture

AFL football operations manager Andrew Demetriou has declared that the 2003 AFL draw will be dedicated to the fans.

Speaking at an AFL lunch at the MCG before the grand final, Demetriou said that the fixture, which is likely to be released within the next seven days, will contain “significant changes”.

“The 2003 program will focus on driving attendances, while simultaneously maximising television and radio audiences. We have learnt a lot from the first year of our new broadcast agreement, and what we have learnt will be applied to season 2003,” he said.

The thrust of the fixture will be to draw fans to the big games, while continuing to work towards maximising TV ratings, which Demetriou admitted is a “delicate mix.”

He said the season will open with a series of large-drawing games that will allow clubs to maximise their memberships, and every club will have a home game in rounds one or two.

Later in April will come Anzac Day, which he said, “we have linked Anzac Day – on Friday next year – with derbies to create a round five weekend in which we’ll be shooting for record attendances, while respecting the values that have made Anzac Day such a sacred time in the Australian calendar.”

“For the first time we have programmed a match in Sydney on Anzac Day – a night match against Melbourne at the Sydney Cricket Ground, and on this weekend you’ll see matches in all AFL cities, showdowns in Perth and Adelaide, and clashes between clubs with a great recent rivalry, like Brisbane and the Western Bulldogs.”

“I am sure this will be one of the great weekends in sport,” he said.

Another innovation will be Foundation Weekend, in round 19, in which the origins and history of the game will be celebrated. “I have always believed that to make appropriate decisions about the future, you need to understand where you came from.”

“The Foundation round is an initiative of the Melbourne Football Club, and will start with a match between Scotch College and Melbourne Grammar as a curtain-raiser to the Melbourne – Geelong game at the MCG.”

“This round may include clubs playing in their foundation strips, a concept that was so successful in the Centenary Year of 1996. Perhaps we’ll see Brisbane in the famous maroon and blue of one its parent clubs – Fitzroy – in what, coincidentally, will be a round 19 replay of today’s match against Collingwood,” he said.

There will also be a weekend devoted to linking the game’s elite level with the grass roots in round 11, and a round for community charities in round 15.

Demetriou also announced an initiative in January, in which all clubs will conduct a week-long training camp at a regional location outside their home base, allowing children, their parents and volunteers to interact with the stars of the game.

“This engagement with the supporters of our game, and our clubs, will also form a significant plank in the new set of negotiations we are about to begin with the AFL Players Association,” he said.

In regards to the Foundation Weekend - does this mean that Brisbane will wear the Fitzroy jumper and Port can wear the prsion bar strip? If so how do the Port & Roy fans feel about this, if it occurs?

This is round 5, so the return derby/showdown games would be in round 20 rather than round 22 - unless the return games are being played out of sequence.

Port wearing the prison bar strip, even if only for one game would be great for the supporters, most of whom are from the SANFL Magpies background.

yes, demetriou has also come out and said that the games of round 16 through to round 22 won't necessarily be played in the same order as those from round 1 to round 7. not sure if that means whole rounds will be moved as one though.

I heard the winner gets four premiership points. Same as every other game.

Again, Collingwood will have their first half of the season without leaving melbourne.
It's funny how since channel9/fat Eddie McChins came on board that the Pies made the GF.
