2004 Draft

CZ if you don't think Roughead is a proven player, then you must not think many Richmond players are proven either, which seems strange considering the positive light you like to shine on our list.

But you missed Roughead, Franklin and Lewis - 2008 Premiership players!
You will never live that draft down! Stuffed up more then Fiora ahead of Pavlich.

Its well known we were going to take Roughead with Pick 4. You took him at Pick 2 so thats not our fault.

Franklin killed us, would have been nice, but we didnt take the risk and we are paying the price. Still, you got lucky.

Lewis is a thug, hasnt got anything on Deledio or Foley. Cotchin is better skilled too. :thumbsu:

lol, your funny. i do think he is a proven player but he is yet to be proven as the no.1 forward. although i think he can make it as the no1 forward i was pointing out that he hasnt been proven as a no.1 forward. and saying that i would go deledio over roughead.

Such semantics. By that definition Bradshaw isn't a proven no.1 forward.

bloody hell, that is not the point. so we just let a troll come on our board and say we stuffed up the draft. i would rather deledio than roughead and lewis. but saying that i would still want roughead to be at richmond. i hope he shows he is a strong ff that gets the ball kicked to him 80% of the time when they take the footy forward and kicks a ton of goals.

Well he is right. We did very badly from the 2004 draft considering the picks we had. I'm not going to rip him simply because he is not a Richmond supporter. Hawthorn completely wiped the floor compared to us in the 2004 draft.

I would go Deledio first in that draft too. 100%

BUT, what your saying about Roughy is incorrect im afraid.

Considering hes kicked 70+ goals WITH Williams and Franklin stealing his goals, thats a tremendous effort. In a side without those two, he could potentially kick more.

Probably set us back a couple of years, along with the JON pick. Theres nothing we can do about it now, it all seemed sensible at the time. They just havent payed off and thats not entirely our fault. Although we should have drafted KPP first.

Apart from Deledio, our 2004 draft was pretty poor. It hurts in hindsight definatley. :thumbsu:

and as i said in a post below i was saying that i would take deledio before roughead. i do agree he is a good player and has proven himself to be able to play at afl. and buddy and williams are proply taking goals off of him.

Thing is Beave, if we were arguing over whether or not a 200 odd game Richmond player had had a good career, you would definitely find a way to argue against it.

Ie...

Greg Tivendale played 185 games. Discuss.

I think Tivendale did bloody good to play 185 games. He should have been moved on earlier, but I'd call his career a success overall.

I disagree. Tambling at his best can control the game by himself - see first quarter against W.C early in 2007. If he can play consistantly at that calibre he is better than Buddy. I don't regret 2004. Hawthorn couldn't have won the premiership with Buddy in the forward line - he may win games off his own boot but he loses as many as he wins. Notice that in the Grand Final he was playing up the field more, opening up the forwardline. All I'm saying is that Buddy is overrated and Bling isn't yet up to his full potential. These are my thoughts:

ELITE
Deledio, Foley

GOOD WITH POTENTIAL

Thursfield, Tambling, McGuane, Morton

GOOD
Patto

POOR WITH POTENTIAL

Thomson (big improver in 2009 my bet, never heard of him before that though), Meyer, Polo

DUDS
Limbach

How many times have we seen Tambling at his best? When you compare him to Deledio its just an absolute pasting. The best ive seen of Tambling is that NAB game against Collingwood. 4 years on, and he hasnt done anything of that calibre since. Hes been thrown all over the place and still cant put together a good season. When does it stop? Do we hang onto him for another 5 years saying that he still has potential?

I think almost all of us privatley regret not picking up Buddy. However, he is still a much better player than Tambling is at the moment, and considering the well known fact that KPP take longer to develop that midfielders, its even worse. I think your assessment of Franklin is incorrect as well. He is by no means overrated, hes easily in the Top 10 players playing right now, and hes only going to improve. If he converted half of the behinds he kicked this year into goals, he'd have almost kicked 150 goals. :thumbsu:

What I am curious about is whether Franklin was doing this type of stuff as a juniour. Was he unstoppable at times.

Did he gain size in the last four years that he didnt have as a junior.

Always wondered what our recruiting team had to work with when they made a decision that I have to admit is still killing me.

Does anybody know what Franklin was offering up to our recruitment gurus as a suggestion that he would be what he is today?

Franklin just wasn't overlooked by us. 3 clubs overlooked Franklin.
Richmond, Hawthorn and Footscray. In fact any club could've had him if they wanted him. They just had to trade a great player for a top 4 pick.
P.S. Anyone know what happened to Kyle Archibald? He was taken in '03 Draft. I think him and Craig Ednie attended a footy clinic in Yarrawonga late in 2006 and haven't been spotted since!!!!!
