Draft Review 2005 - Redo the 2005 Draft

I wouldn't really call having an opinion pathetic, your obsession on the other hand...
I agree, Essendon were the worst team in the AFL after round 11, before it they were one of the best.
Shit happens.
One of the best? Your ignorance is cute. Off the back of the easiest first 10 weeks in the AFL you did little to be considered one of the best teams. But what ever delusions gets you through the off season. Maybe do a 2005 draft list instead if clogging this thread up with tears.

Yes, one of the best.
No tears here sweety, just enjoying watching your obsession, it's borderline freaky.

Your mate Browne Eye did.

Mufassa, the issue here is not that you don't agree with me that Melbourne is incredibly poor.
It's that you just love any chance to bag Essendon.
Feel free, but don't use my comments to hide behind that fact.

You'd really take any of the Top 3 - hard to split. 4, 5, 8, 9, 10 aren't too far away from each other either - nor are 6 and 7. Really just a matter of personal opinion IMO.
Disagree Pendlebury has been consistently better than Murphy over time and Kennedy hasn't really set the world on fire yet. I don't think he deserves to be anywhere near top 3. He has had a few games where he has kicked a bag, but hasn't put it together for a full season yet.

East Freo are one of the great non AFL clubs.
B: Jacob Brennan, Luke McPharlin, Kyle Hardingham
HB: David Swallow, Harry Taylor, Kane Lucas
C: Andrew Swallow, Dom Cassisi, Koby Stevens
HF: Rhys Palmer, Mitch Clark, Chris Masten
F: Jamie Cripps, Josh Kennedy, Alex Fasolo
R: Aaron Sandilands, Simon Black, Daniel Kerr
Int: Patrick Ryder, Josh Simpson, Garrick Ibbotson, Brad Sheppard

I'd tip them to beat most AFL sides

Nah. I don't agree with this. I'd rate Pendles as No.1 now, but up until 2010 I'd have taken Murphy; can't see much argument for Pendles having been consistently better to that point ... unless you'd care to mount one. From 2010 to now though, Pendles really stepped up his game with what were perceived as weaknesses, in goal kicking, marking and at times, hardness at the ball and has shot ahead. Wouldn't surprise me if Murphy slipped passed him again though.

EFA.

A very good top ten from this draft.

I think the clearest thing from this draft was the inspired choices of Pendlebury and Swallow.

Pendlebury wasn't even mentioned in alot of top 10 predictions. Collingwood were tipped to pick Thomas and Ellis. I remember thinking where did this Pendlebury fellow come from. Collingwood really wanted Murphy and I would be very happy to have him at Collingwood.

Thomas, Murphy and Pendlebury have been excellent for their teams and fans.

But Swallow takes the cake. How could he get through to pick 41? Can anyone shed some light on this? Maybe an injury. Great drafting.

Injury has ruined Ellis. Heaps of skill and I thought after 2008 he was worthy of the 3rd draft pick however unfortunately, his body let him down. A real pity.

Pick 43, and there was more than a little luck involved.

2005 was in the era when footskills were giving an extremely high priority and Spittas kicking was deemed a concern. In fairness he was only an average kick when he arrived at the club but worked hard and now I would rate him as good. He always had the pace, hands and inside grunt.

Spittas drafting has a couple of fortuitous circumstances as far as North are concerned. Firstly, we ended up with pick 43 and Jade Rawlings after trading pick 46 to the Bulldogs (remember the controversial Hawthorn/Bulldogs Rawlings/Veale trade when Jade wanted to come to North?).

Secondly, Dean Laidley was insistent on taking Kasey Green at pick 43, and had to be overruled to head recruiter Neville Stibbard, as Port were going to pounce at pick 44. Port chose Carlisle at 44 and Green was taken with Norths next pick at 45 and the rest is history. Laidley never had the controlling vote at a North draft table ever again.

We got Swallow who has turned out to be a gun and the Bulldogs got Travis Baird who played 5 games of AFL football and was delisted at the end of 2007.

Wasn't Swallow eligible to be drafted in 2004 and was overlooked by every club? Hard to find a bigger contrast than him and his brother

I think he was, but don't have money on that.

He was a pretty accomplished junior. He captained the WA U/18 state side. The bloke has made every club recruiter look silly, including us, as we took Matt Riggio at pick 28 ahead of him.

Why? Foot skills. I am so glad that the "Lonie era" has ended.

It was a very serendipitous event that he fell in to our arms in the way it happened. We got lucky.

No he was 17 when drafted in 2005. Some other brothers with big contrasts at the draft table!!

Joel went 7 Adam Selwood 53.
Chris went 12 Brad Scott went 60.
Luke went at 2 Matthew Ball taken as a rookie.
Adam went at 43 when he was 17 Brett Goodes was rookied at 29.
Darren went at 1 Damien Gasper went at 86
Shane went 18 Brent Harvey was taken at 47
Cale went at 4 Jarryd Morton was taken at 33.
Daniel went at 8 Steven Motlop was taken at 39
Brad went at 2 Luke Ottens was taken at 50

The Harveys really stick out there, in terms of the lower picked one outstripping the higher.

S.Harvey, one of all the time greats for both Essendon and North!

We had Aaron Davey on our rookie list and was set to up grade him - changed at the last minute and took Harvey. Like the Hawks and Essendon having the joy of watching Paul Salmon so to the Roos and Essendon with Harvey.

It is pretty remarkable to look at the last 10 picks in 2005, the absolute last guys taken at the very back end of the rookie draft.

Sam Rowe (rookie pick 60) - about to play his 3rd AFL game, looks like he will get quite a few more
Adam Prior (rookie pick 59) - 0 games
Ed Barlow (rookie pick 58) - 34 AFL games, 22 goals
Kieren Jack (rookie pick 57) - 118 AFL games, 82 goals, 31 Brownlow votes
Ben McGlynn (rookie pick 55) - 108 AFL games, 118 goals, 20 Brownlow votes
Simon Phillips (rookie pick 54) - 14 AFL games, 9 goals
Sam Elliot (rookie pick 53) - 0 games
Tom Logan (rookie pick 52) - 104 AFL games, 22 goals
Andre Gianfagna (rookie pick 51) - 0 games
Cheynee Stiller (rookie pick 49) - 100 AFL games, 21 goals

4 100+ gamers already, much higher picks in the draft struggle to hit that sort of strike rate

Mate, this whole page has been you talking rot. We never had Aaron Davey on our rookie list. He played at Port Melbourne when they were our affiliates. We were allegedly going to draft him, but never did.

Andrew Swallow was eligible for the 2004 draft, and was overlooked entirely.

Pendles ................. Daylight .............. Front runner Murphy

Yeo/Paparone/Duffy over Simpson every day of the week.
No Hooker?

Murphy is not a front runner. But I get it; it's just soooo easy to pull out stupid cliches when you have nothing genuine to add. And yes, Pendles has been the better player this last two years. Not sure why you've bothered quoting me though, as nothing I said was wrong. It wasn't a prediction of the future, it was a call of the past and present as it stood at that time. Overall  post!
