Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

I don't think we could have possibly done better than what we did with this draft. Call me biased but a few years down the track Ellis will be absolute top notch and the same with Birchall

Birchall was a great pick, but you stuffed up badly picking Dowler. There are also plenty of onballers who have showed more than Ellis, although Ellis was pretty good this weekend, I'll give him that.

Two who haven't been mentioned, but are looking very good pickups are Simon Buckley from Melbourne and Sam Lonergan from Essendon.

Yep, agree that Dowler wasn't the correct choice at #6, in hindsight. However, I haven't completely given up on him yet. Last weekend he had 25 possessions, 3 goals, and 8 inside 50s - his best outing at VFL level. With Franklin and Roughead owning an iron grip on Hawthorn's FF and CHF positions, Dowler hasn't been able to get the senior gametime that he might really need to take the next step in his development. Time will tell.

Ellis is blooming later than blokes like Murphy and Jones, but has continued to make big strides this year. I'm reserving judgement on him until his improvement curve plateaus.

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

Ibbotson, like Ellis, is blooming late. Warnock was from that draft too. Our 2nd(Ibbo) and 3rd (Warnock) rounders are doing better than our 1st rounder (Drum).

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

M Murphy
S Pendlebury
D Thomas
N Jones
P Ryder
G Birschall
S Hurn
C Batram
A Swallow
M Stokes
S Higgins
S Gilbert
J Kennedy
M Drum
X Ellis

Who's Batram? Is he Batman's cousin or something? Or just a weird hybrid creature...:p

Nice to see there's a lot of unbiased opinions in some of these posts.

Although many have Jonesy from Melbourne in the top 5, i'd have to say it would look like this,

1. Murphy
2. Pendlebury
3. Higgins
4. Thomas
5. Birchall
6. Ryder
7. Jones
etc...

agree on both!:)

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

Interesting to see who got it right and who got it wrong. I think there would be a fair shake up in the order if the whole 2005 draft was redone today.

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

Evaluating human beings is far from an exact science so drafting players will always be hit and miss. There are always extraneous issues that affect someone’s performance - injury, family, illness, things you could never anticipate.

Yep.

I also think that, in general, the "upside" of just about everyone drafted in the first round is very similar. The difference is top 5s "rarely" miss. Carlton took Murphy not because he was streets ahead of everyone else in the draft, but because there was almost no way he wouldn't turn into at least a "good" AFL player.

And I note that a few years on, he's still just about a unanimous #1.

Higgins has shown a lot of skill and hardness, was watchin a lot of him last year and looked in top nik in the preseason.

Came back through willy last week and notched up 32 touches.

Class player.

Oh and in my opinion Vince Jones and Higgins all > Thomas.

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done
