Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

Kennedy is more important to a football, so I could see why you'd pick him ahead of Swallow, but Swallow's the better footy player.

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

Swallow ahead of Kennedy?

JK is a better footballer and the type of player you build around. I'd still take Murphy, Kennedy and Bower. I would only change our Edwards selection by drafting Swallow.

Not only is Swallow a better footballer than Josh kennedy (although hard to compare because they are completely different players) he has captain material written all over him. He is the sort of bloke you can build footy clubs around.

Two best and fairests and twice All Australian top 40 are pretty good achievements to date anyhow.

Bower? FFS, give up on him, he's no good. Isn't he on the table and no one wants him?

Jones is way too high. He'll be delisted by Melbourne within 2 years. Varcoe is better than Jones - even IF Varcoe has more help than Jones.

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

Ryder is a far better player than Goldstien

Goldstien wouldn't get a look in our best 21.

Just thought I'd bring this one up. Was said at the start of the year.

Goldstein is going to be one of the best big guys in the league.

Suggest otherwise, and you'll soon look like this guy above.

This year was argubly Jones' best year to date.. I reckon he may breakthrough next year and become a very good player.

Varcoe meanwhile is an extremely average footballer being carried by what is the greatest side of all time.

I'd still take Ryder but he'd easily be in our 21. Hille is finished but Goldstein has already shown more as a ruckman than Hille has his entire career (in terms of consistency, Hille can dominate games like Cox and Sandilands and Goldstein as yet can't).

Ryder is far more versatile. As a pure ruckman, Goldstein, as a footballer, Ryder.

Just my opinion. No need for anyone to get their knickers in a knot.

Jones has to give more because he probably knows he has to work harder to stay in the team. I think Jones has well and truly hit his peak and he'll be too slow for his type of footballer within a couple of years. I actually wanted him in last year's trade week as an inside/outside mid but I've changed my mind, disposal is poor and speed is average - love his G and T though.

Varcoe went up another level this year imho. Still not quite at Andrew Lovett's level (Geelong wanted him a couple years ago IIRC) but he's still very good at his trade.

No where near Andrew Lovett's level. *

From what I saw this year I thought Varcoe was average. His stats say he had about an on par or better year than 2010 but i would disagree.. i think he has gone backwards in terms of his overall skill and efficiency.

You'd still take Ryder over a guy who made the AA squad, best tap ruckman in the league, and is considered highly to be in the top 30 players in the league? Oh god, bias much.

I know it's my team that has Goldtsein, but Goldstein is light years ahead of Ryder in development.

I don't really care for AA that much, Dustin Fletcher would be in the AA team every year if it were accurate.

There were very few decent ruckman who played the full season or could've been considered AA in 2011. Ryder played SFA in the ruck really in 2011. Also, I think ruckmen in the pure sense are overrated.

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

3 Of the players who finished ahead of him didn't make AA, it's a different judgement system.

I rate Goldstein as a good AFL Player - Still early in his career and should develop into a very good player.

Spent all season reading that Goldstein is already a GUN - But yet he finished 7th in the B and F.

What does where someone finishes in a best and fairest award (a midfielders award) have to do with how good someone is? Patty Ryder finished 9th in Essendons best and fairest, does that mean he's Essendons 9th best player? No.

Goldstein acrued the 2nd most hitouts ever in a year, with the the 3rd most effective hitouts in the league.

Disposals - Goldstein > Ryder
Tap Outs - Goldstein > Ryder
Taps to advantage - Goldstein > Ryder
1%'ers - Goldstein > Ryder
Marks - Ryder > Goldstein
Tackles - Goldstein > Ryder
Goals - Ryder > Goldstein
Clearances - Goldstein > Ryder
Contested possesions - Goldstein > Ryder

Anyway, not sure why I'm even arguing with you or any Essendon supporters. About 90% of people would agree that Goldstein shits on Ryder, and the other 10% are Essendon supporters ;)

I certainly would not say that there is daylight between those top 5 players, and Birchall. Is one of the best HBF in the league. Was named in the AA 40, and finished 3rd in Hawthorn BnF.

I agree that he is 6, but I think he is comfortably the 6th best.

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

1 (1) Marc Murphy
2 (5) Scott Pendlebury
3 (2) Dale Thomas
4 (12) Nathan Jones
5 (13) Shannon Hurn
6 (7) Patrick Ryder
7 (42) Robert Warnock
8 (11) Shaun Higgins
9 (14) Grant Birchall
10 (15) Travis Varcore
11 (43) Andrew Swallow (4)
12 (61) Matthew Stokes
13 (33) Sam Gilbert
14 (60) Clint Bartram
15 (9) Mitch Clark
16 (4) Josh Kennedy
17 (3) Xavier Ellis
18 (36) Jake Edwards
19 (10) Marcus Drum
20 (41) Rhan Hooper

Found it alot harder then i thought it would be but if you dont see it being right make your own i know a few Hawthorn supporters will fine this interesting

Good work on the list. I don't think many would disagree with the top 3. But I think Swallow at 46 or so deserves to be top 5. Also Garrick Ibbotson on late form deserves to be 15 or so. I think Varcoe should be 3 spots higher, Higgins hasn't impressed as much.

True I was exaggerating a bit ;). He is a quality player

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

Thomas is a superior player to Swallow.

It's like comparing a S Class Mercedes to a Ford V8.

Thomas can do things & has that are beyond Swallow. He is also an All Australian, a Premiership player and a player that has played 3 great Grand Finals.
