Draft Review 2005 - Redo the 2005 Draft

Well this was a few months ago, but anyway Petrie played in the back line for a large chunk of his career and also spent some time in the ruck, im surprised someone with over 18k posts would make this comparison....
Try reading all of my post, and the post I replied to.
Not too many more words. Not really *that* tricky to grasp what I was after.

Strong draft on reflection.

Pendlebury, Murphy are both elite midfielders.

Swallow, Kennedy, Jones, Thomas, Priddis, Birchall all A grade midfielders

Ryder and Clark are key talls.

Jack, Hurn, Varcoe, Vince, Douglas all good footballers.

Jack is well beyond the "good footballer" group and belongs firmly in the A grade midfielder group. 1st inside 50s, 1st in Goal Assists this year. B&F winner and will probably win again this year.

My mistake, didn't realise had won a B&F. Very good footballer.

We can all agree on 1 thing - Sydney smashed this draft with their 3 picks:

51. Matthew Laidlaw
54. Kristin Thornton
59. Ryan Brabazon

Dont think i have time to read all your BS.... ill post what i feel like... but thanks for the advice
For the remedial English students out there -

I was pointing out, that using Teff's "logic" - (he's only kicked X bags in Y games therefore he's not a quality key forward) Petrie isn't a quality key forward.
And I can't imagine Teff saying that. Thus his/her logic is flawed.

To think Laidley wanted to take Kasey Green at 43, not Swallow, and basically had to be physically forced to accept we were taking the bloke who is now captain and a dual B+F.

The Laidley years make for scary reading on drafting.

We have done well out of the rookie draft over the years picking up Leigh Adams, Scott McMahon, Nathan Grima, Josh Gibson (Haw), Michael Firrito, Leigh Harding,

1) Carlton: Marc Murphy (1)
2) Collingwood: Scott Pendlebury (5)
3) Hawthorn: Andrew Swallow (43)
4) Carlton: Josh Kennedy (4)
5) Collingwood: Dale Thomas (2)
6) Hawthorn: Paddy Ryder (7)
7) Essendon: Matthew Priddis (ROOK)
8) Richmond: Shaun Higgins (11)
9) Brisbane: Xavier Ellis (3)
10) Fremantle: Bernie Vince (32)
11) Western Bulldogs: Nathan Jones (12)
12) Melbourne: Shannon Hurn (13)
13) West Coast: Mitch Clarke (9)

Edit: Just discovered Jack was a rookie draft pick in 2006, he'd fit in there somewhere

Good list - Jones, Clark and Hurn should be above Higgins and Ellis.

Good list - Jones and Clark are the two I would bump.

No love for Eddie Betts? Picked in the AA squad for the last 2 seasons. Has a career goal tally of 263. I think he would comfortably go ahead of those you have selected from 20-29, as well as being ahead of Hocking, Guerra & maybe one or two others in your Top 19.

He'd be ahead of Hocking, Guerra, Mcglynn, Dempsey and Stokes in the top 20, possibly others as well.

I assumed we were considering drafts post 2005 season. Eddie Betts was taken pre 2005 so I did not include him.

Kieren Jack has really come from nowhere. Had a relatively uninspiring first couple of years but his 2012 season was an astonishing two-way midfield effort. 1st in goal assists and 2nd in inside 50s, plus kicking 27 goals himself.

Are those Sydney stats or league stats?
Either way he's really been a surprise packet and an absolute gun.

League stats - was also 4th in tackles. The thing that is often overlooked is his kicking, very reliable shot on goal in particular. Has been my favourite player for years, he's very different to Kennedy who gets all the applause.

If his brother was half as good we'd be laughing

Far out. Wonder why he doesn't poll better?
He's a personal favourite of mine, he's just got so many offensive and defensive attributes.

I stand corrected. Even though he was taken in 2004, the AFL Record Season Guide refer to it as being the 2005 Pre-season Draft.

Yep, that's correct. Perhaps at that point they were conducting the PSD later than they do now.
I would have placed Betts between 9 and 14 in this draft.

A bit deceiving as he played 25 games. Better of speaking in averages when using stats like that.
