Draft Review 2005 - Redo the 2005 Draft

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

how do you compare a talls worth to a mids. or a defenders to a mids or forward to a mids.

clearly the best player from the 2005 draft is pendulbury. but how do we even rate a mids worth.
guys like priddis, jones, swallow, who may lack a bit of polish but have few peers when it comes to getting their hands on the ball both inside and out. all of em have great defensive games as well.
where do you place a bloke like heath hocking whos primary job is to defend a player and then get the ball. he does both really well.

where do you place dale thomas. until two seasons a go and a dodgy ankle he was right up there do we allow for injury.

one or two more points. give or take a player as im not 100% whos been cut this yr. there is only 27 players of 66 live nd picks remaining on lists from this draft.
this draft after 8 yrs is running at 40% retention rate.
the rookie draft after 8 yrs is running at 14.5% retention rate or roughly just one in 7 making it.

for me
best mid - pendulbury
best kpf - kennedy
best sml/med forward- betts
best ruckman - warnock
best kpd - carlisle
best running defender - birchall
best defensive mid - hocking.

Warnock has potential but Ryder is currently far and away the better player. Yes he's inconsistent but he regularly steps up in last quarters and his taps are some of the best in the league.

my issue with ryder is i keep on asking myself is he a kpp or a ruckman.
hes okay at both roles but master of none. yes hes done real well at times in the ruck against certain types but then he goes missing in games and for weeks on end.
as a pure ruckman i think warnock has been better in the role against all comers and will only get better with age and opportunity.

im an east freo supporter so ive seen a lot of paddy right thru his career. i still believe he would have made a fantastic chb if developed there.

Ryder will never be as good as expected, but at the same time he is a valuable contributor. His tapwork - hits to ad antage is close to the best in the AFL.

I strongly disagree. Ryder is labeled as inconsistent not because he doesn't regularly impact matches but because given his level of talent he should be a much better player. This makes people overlook the good player he actually is.

If you were actually re-doing the 2005 draft then Harry Taylor would go in the top 5. The fact no club had the sense to draft him doesn't change the fact he was available.

But he was not in the Draft, Well you could also Count Kurt Tippett then in this Draft

Birchall's been an average-good player in a very good team.

Take Birchall out of the Hawks and put him in the midfield of a mid-table team for six years and tell me how he goes.

Anti-Carlton bias is part of the fabric of BigFooty, but remember trolling doesn't work if it's too obvious.

I don't think it was trolling its just that running defenders seem to be overrated now more than ever imo.

I agree Murphy is a clear no.2 from this draft IMO but I think your underating Birchall massively to say he is an average to good player. He isn't a midfielder so he probably wouldn't thrive in your scenario. However he is arguably the best rebounding defender in the competition.

Birchall ain't a gun mid but he is just about the best HBF in the game and much better than a good-average player. One of the first picked at Hawthorn, just look at his best and fairests results the past 3 years. Last year he still came 6th or so after missing about 8 games. He is a gun.

Welcome (back) to the world of people calling your players "good-average players in a good team" - the year after winning a premiership.

Birchall is a gun, any team would have him. The best Back Flank in the league behind Enright.

Yes for sure, would love him at the crows

Birchall is the best half-back in the league for mine.

My bias aside though he's clearly in the top few for his position, which I can't comprehend how this would be up for discussion, though I think the few plonkers that disagree are entitled to be wrong. Free country and all that.

He'd be dual AA had he not been struck down by injury last season, yet still finished high in our B&F. He is so important to how we play, and especially with how we transition from defense to attack.
