every competition needs rep games. international rules is not that game. besides, the players seem to be starting to take this concept even less seriously than state of origin.

id love to see it back. the best footballers on the paddock playing OUR game.

watch the racists come out in droves to heckle the AAS team though

total package leading the cheer squad

I tihnk it's almost a bit racist to even HAVE an abo's only team. Are we trying to speerate them from the rest of us average white Aussies? Are they better than us or something? Or just different because of their skin?

why bother, how about we put the abo players in the states they're born in? Makes more sense for State of Origin.

It isn't SKIN of Origin, or Country of Ancewstor's origin. it's state.

Couldn't agree more
& some here are calling international rules a pointless exercise.

How many here would be prepared to lose a player for a season due to a State of Origin game....eg Riewoldt does his knee representing the Allies.
The use by date past decades ago - let it go.

That is the whole problem. Attitudes like this.

I suggest people go and do research into how many players suffered injuries representing their states and come back showing how long they were aout for.

Outside of Tony Hall in 1989, which Hawthorn easily covered the gap of anyway, there wouldn't be too many.

tarrant/walker aboriginal?????

darryl white, leon davis, graham johncock, dion woods, roger hayden, troy cook

They are.

Tarrant isn't. He's just a country bumpkin from mildura (an overrated one at that). He's trying to blame his idiocy and drunkenness on being aboriginal.

another two that may not have been mentioned were davey and whelan.

Once we get a true national comp with an even spread of teams throughout Australia, where young blokes can play for the teams in their state that they have grown up supporting then we may have SOO every week.

Im hoping the AFL do hold a SOO carnival in 2008 to celebrate the the 150th year of our great Aussie game.
The first official game game of Australian Football played was organised by Thomas Wills and was between Melbourne Grammar and Scotch College in 1858 near to where the current MCG is.

Wearing the big 'V' used to be the benchmark of whether you were a good league player or not. It used to symbolise being the best and having a super team of Locketts, Abletts, Lyons, Buddha Hocking's and Archers etc.

IMO wearing the Australian jumper at the end of year doesn'y mean a pinch of sh**. There are not representing Ausssie Rules and the game.

My highlight growing up was seeing my team's idols Granty and Smithy running around with Glenn Archer, Stevo and the other guys mentioned and playing against a top line S.A outfit.

The game is all about dollars and cents and scheduling and surgery. It's not about personal achievement of which origin is the pinicle.

If the players had respect for themselves and what it meant to represent us vic's or the bloody crow eaters then origin would be back. If the had respect for the history of the game and our icons like knuckles and EJ then they would. And if they had respect for the fans who want to see a pure game of aussie rules fought out between super teams then i'd have my highlight back. But i'm not holding my breath, although nothing would be better than 100,000 vic's in the MCG cheering on the big 'V' against SA.

Fair point. SOO is football quality at its purest. SA would have Pavlich and Tredrea up forward with O'Loughlin on a flank, Ricciuto in the middle .... Vics would have a plethora of quality players to pick from aswell. Makes your mouth water really.

On a different note, I watched a SOO game in the early 90's where Carey dominated for SA and we won, it was fantastic. The SOO rules changed after that, so Carey had to play for the Allies. Strange, as the rules were deemed ok when Dunstall was able to play for the VICS alongside Lockett.

Someone should start a separate thread putting some 'theoretical' SOO teams together.

The carnival needs to happen and if it means we have 2 divisions, then so be it.

Initially the program would have a promotion/relegation system, where the bottom state of Division 1 and the Winner of Division 2 would swap for the next carnival.

Here's how I'd go with it:

Division 1:

Victoria
South Australia
Western Australia
Tasmania

Division 2:

New South Wales/ACT
Queensland/NT
Australian Amateurs

I like this idea but would have Tasmania in Div2 and no Amatuers
Though the Div 2 teams would struggle to get a side purely from AFL clubs but I don't think it matters it is good for the lesser likes in emerging areas to play along side some of the greats.

have each team play the other 2 teams in their div once with one at home and one away, that should take 3 weeks with the highest aggragate scoring team to play at home against the 2nd highest aggragate scoring team in the 4th week.

No divisions, bring it back as it was, VIC, SA, WA and the Allies. It worked well that way. I'd love to see it come back.

I know this isn't really a state of origin game... but an 'all-star' type game where one team is made up of players from Vic sides, and the other team is from the interstate teams' players.

Its probably hard to get the players passionate about it - but it is a chance to shine on the field where only the best players are invited. And the teams would be loaded with talent.

Quick teams of the top of my head (probably biased :) ):
Non-Vic team:
F Voss Brown Akermanis
HF Hall Tredrea Embley
C Mcleod Cousins Judd
HB Lappin McPharlin Cornes
B Wirrpunda Michael Johnson
R Cox, Black, Ricciuto
Interchange (6): Pavlich, Hasleby, Fletcher, Power, O'loughlin, Wanganeen

Vic-based team:
F Johnson Lloyd Gehrig
HF Tarrant Reiwoldt Hird
C Dal Santo West Crawford
HB Yze Grant Colbert
B Archer Scarlett Fletcher
R Everitt, Harvey, Buckley
Interchange (6): Fevola, Bruce, Ling, Darcy, Ball, Brown

Would be good to watch...

I'd love to see SoO return.. With EJ going around in the car.. that is one of my favourite footy memories.

Sadly the only way you will see the Big V go around will be when we thrash the Croweaters on May 21 at Port Melbourne.
