Not sure Cypher. He played at the U15 Championships in 2003 and now plays at South Freo but I have not come across him in any tapes or squads in the last 2 years at underage levels.

I wonder what happened to him?

Getting Gumbleton/Riewoldt, Kennedy and a second round pick who is lightning quick would be a terrible draft for the Hawks. :

Other players who I think have a bit of talent (not comprehensive)

Nathan Djerrkura from the Northern Territory. 19/9/88 and 176cms and 69kgs. Speed and skill. Is playing TAC this year.

Nick Smith from Oakleigh Chargers. 181cms and 76kgs 12/6/88.

Djerrkura is bigger then 69kgs. He would be pushing 80+ at the moment. He is massive and has a bucket-load of talent. however APS committments may intervene with TAC Cup.

I was going to ask you about Smithy.
What do you think about him? He is a very natural footballer and i think will be drafted. What do yo think? Again APS (school) commitments will stop him from playing Oakleigh too much.

Keen eye there mojo, most blokes haven't spotted Dwyer yet (more like 186 now). I think by Championships time he'll be well up your list. Spoke to a Melb based recruiter yesterday who was wishfully thinking he stays low key. Doesn't happen anymore.

Scott Dwyer is a very natural talented footballer. Has the ability to really turn it on and turn a game off his own boot. This is his first full pre season and from all reports he is flying. Along with daniel hayes i think you will see both of them picked up very very early providing they both have any injury free season.

23) Gavin Urquhart

Midfielder

Morningside (Qld)

Impressive for Qld at the U18s and was named All Australian there. Very hard and physical player who is at his best in contested situations. Seems to have a case of the ‘white line fevers’. Prone to losing the plot a little and can be niggled and lose concentration at times.
Will put his head over the ball and enjoys contested situations where he performs at his best. Still capable of running with the bell and linking up. Can turn the ball over in pressure situations a little too much but given time and space is a very good kick. Plenty of distance and penetration with his disposal.

Gets the ball, runs to dangerous positions and uses it. Hard and tough and can clear the ball from congestion. Effective rather than classy but can play all over the ground.
Not overly quick but has enough pace for it not to be a concern. Good strong tackler and a good inside midfield prospect. Has everything for that role and is not classy but hard and effective. Goodish skills and can play. Very good tank and runs all day.

Good size already at 181 and 80kgs and is physically developed. Used this to advantage in the U18 Championships last year. Not sure there is too much physical improvement in him left but do like what I have seen of him.

He really impressed me in the Challenge Cup, Carnival etc. Lots of ability there.

Yeah, Guess he is a bit big boned. But if you can run out four quaters on the ball in the territory your fit in my books. He should come close to winning Waratah's B and F in A grade this year which is a fair effort from someone who is currently 17?

FYI... He won the Best and Fairest last night for Waratahs...

Have to agree totally,he is my personal favorite like mcentee from last year urquart looks to be a real gun in the making, predicting he will go around the 10 mark. but its early days anyone that gets urquart gets a tough hard A grade mid who will spend all day at the stopages getting the ball out to his teammates.

4) Mitchell Thorp

Key position player

25/12/88
193cms and 84kgs.
Northern Bombers, Tasmania

Explosive key position player from Tasmania. Fast and very mobile and has agility and running ability. Played all over the place and shown himself to be versatile and basically up to all the roles he has been given.
That includes being switched from full back to full forward in an U18 Championships game and having the poise and temprement to handle it.

Takes a big mark in pack situations and also in 1 on 1. Really athletic explosive player in the Luke McPharlin class. Good kick for goal and in general play and has fine skills. No real weaknesses in his game and could develop in any of the 4 key positions down the spine.
Reads the play well and is not often caught being out of position. An athlete who has football smarts and skill. Therefore is the complete package.

We are talking about Chris Tarrant levels of athleticism when considering Thorp. Add to that a far superior kick and especially for goal and likely extra height, versatility and barely 17 and we have a huge prospect.



5) James Sellar

Ruck/Key forward

195cms and 86kgs
24/3/89
Glenelg

South Australian player who was named best player at the U16 Championships.
Very smooth and moves like a key position player. Very high work rate and involves himself in the play. Contests well around the ground and is capable of playing a key position up forward. Good skills and does not any of the awkwardness of most ruckmen in dropping the ball from hand to foot.
Plays like a ruck but moves like a key position. Athletic and is in good in contested situations. Has a fine touch by hand in directing the ball down in the ruck and a good awareness of how to use his body and where to deliver to his midfielders.

Wiry frame, not bulky but quite strong and should not have problems putting on weight. Big leap, good speed and a natural athlete. Does not lack aggression and hardness at the ball. Pretty reasonable below his feet. The complete package.

The worry will be his height. Will he grow the 3 or 4 cms he needs to be a full time ruck at AFL level or stay at that in between size he is now. If he does grow a lot then he moves right up onto number 1 contention. He could make it as a key position forward if he does not as he is athletic enough but prefer him in the ruck roaming around the ground. The new ruck rules seem to be favouring the giants and has to be a question mark on Sellar that will not be resolved until draft camp and official testing.

If he does grow to close to 2 meters then Sellar is looking at a more physical and athletic version of Josh Fraser. Better in contested situations and a more robust body and having more speed. Likely be able to handle the rigours of AFL better than Fraser has so far in his career.

I made a comparison in style at this early stage. Sellar I think will have a more robust and strong body and be even more athletic than Josh.

I thought I made it pretty clear what my thoughts were.

Matt Austin 30/3/89, 186 and 72 kgs. Athletic and skillful and classy.
North Ballarat.

Rhyce Prismall 6/4/89, 188 and 79kgs. Quick and skilled but a bit "outside" and 1 sided. Takes a good mark and a half forward flank/wing at this stage with a long kick but with growth he might turn into a tall forward. Western Jets.

As we know these things are difficult and time consuming to do and no two people see things the same way. I certainly appreciate those that take the time and have the eye to see the things most of us don't see. It's a pretty thankless task too as after the draft, it is all held up to ridicule and Mojo, Footyman, Weaver, Wiseby, Goalden Hawk and co would all testify to this.

For now, kudos to mojo and I can't wait to see your stuff too jet. You seem to have some ideas and hopefully you would have the top ranked profiles in your head and only have to get it down on to paper (or keyboard as the case may be).

I find it hard to believe the AFL recruiting department have ranked the players at this stage. They would have an idea bout the AIS kids of course but its not there job to rank them but to develop them and supervise the programs for the kids who are scholarship holders.

So anytime you want to post a link about the "AFL recruiting departemnst rankings" then that would be very interesting.

Whoa! Down boy.

Firstly, this is mojo31's opinion which would differ to others. Doesn't mean he's wrong, I never said that.

Secondly, yes Sellar is rated No.1 by the AFL recruiting dep. (at this very EARLY stage)

Thirdly, others rate him lower - 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc.

It's just a matter of opinion and I think you are reading into my post too much. I never "ridiculed" him but rather just gave a differing opinion.

Ahh yes. The same club recruiters who say they are "happy with who they got" and "can't believe he slipped down that far" and "we took who we thought was number 1".

That would mean about 10 numbers 1s after Murphy was picked if you beleive club recruiters. I doubt they are going to say "we are shattered we missed him...." and destroy who the player they did gets confidence.
