I wouldn't say a "great" year personally. Has bullied the non-finals teams.
Now you would always expect someone to perform better against lesser teams, but his goal averages as an example more than halves when playing top 8 teams. 1.8 against finalists and 4 against non-finalists.
That is a fair discrepancy. That isn't to say he had a poor year, just that I don't think merely stating stats is definitive to say he is having a "great" year.
Comparing any key position, it is largely subjective.
As an example, I think McPharlin has been the stand-out key defender this year (and stand-out key position player as well) - yet read the press and he rarely makes the midway AA sides.
I always hate this argument. Of course he is doing better against the worst teams - they will cough up more opportunities and most likely have a lower quality defence.
Averaging 2 goals against the best teams is a great average - it would mean if Richmond played top 8 teams every week all the way through the finals he'd kick 50 goals. Assuming he splits the matches roughly 50/50 between top 8 and bottom 10 teams, he'll be on track to kick 75 goals and win the Coleman. How could that be seen as anything other than "great"?
