Draft Review 2006 - Redo the 2006 Draft

I wouldn't say a "great" year personally. Has bullied the non-finals teams.

Now you would always expect someone to perform better against lesser teams, but his goal averages as an example more than halves when playing top 8 teams. 1.8 against finalists and 4 against non-finalists.

That is a fair discrepancy. That isn't to say he had a poor year, just that I don't think merely stating stats is definitive to say he is having a "great" year.

Comparing any key position, it is largely subjective.

As an example, I think McPharlin has been the stand-out key defender this year (and stand-out key position player as well) - yet read the press and he rarely makes the midway AA sides.

I always hate this argument. Of course he is doing better against the worst teams - they will cough up more opportunities and most likely have a lower quality defence.

Averaging 2 goals against the best teams is a great average - it would mean if Richmond played top 8 teams every week all the way through the finals he'd kick 50 goals. Assuming he splits the matches roughly 50/50 between top 8 and bottom 10 teams, he'll be on track to kick 75 goals and win the Coleman. How could that be seen as anything other than "great"?

Of course you perform better against weak sides, I stated as much, so you aren't coming up with something new. It's the disparity between the two that is telling. It's not Drew Petrie levels of flat track bullying, but it's not starring against the best either
He averages 1.8...

Last years Walker averaged ~3.2 and Franklin ~3.5 goals against top 8 teams (and through the finals)

That is almost double Riewoldt's output against the best teams.

So no, I don't think it's a "great" year. It clearly isn't poor either.

It's now probably time to take Lachie Hansen seriously. I think it's fair to say that over the last 8 weeks, since moving into defence, he's been our best player.

The GC downpour aside, he's averaging 11.4 marks per game in defence. A fair chunk of them are intercepts and/or contested. Makes you wonder why he's spent so much of his career in the forward line.

North supporters say this all the time. Hansen has a good month or two up forward, and it's 'hallelujah, why the hell was he being wasted in defence'. Then, he stagnates up forward, has a good month or two after a couple of weeks battling and it's 'hallelujah, why the hell was he being wasted up forward'.

Lets see him put together a season of good, consistent, injury free footy before he comes close to justifying his #3 price tag, or even a first rounder.

definitely hasn't justified his pick 3 price tag yet but the last 2 months certainly shows why he was highly touted as a junior. One of the best markers of the ball in the AFL. looks very comfortable down back. Keep it up Lachie!

Oh don't get me wrong, he hasn't justified the pick 3 but this is by far his best form to date.

Frawley regularly beats the league's best KPP, and does so despite our abysmal midfield. I'm pretty sure a team's #1 forward hasn't kicked more than 3 on him this year. Buddy and J Riewoldt kicked three against us but at least those of those were from free kicks against other players, or when Chip was on the bench.

Also provides a lot of our rebound footy. Mad not to have him in the top 10.

Kennedy and Darling kicked 10 between them against Melbourne.

What i will say is there aren't many jobs in the AFL harder than playing Full Back at Melbourne.

We may have stuffed up a fair few drafts, but I'm happy that we have our two KPB from this draft (Frawley & Garland)

Good draft for Key Defenders, West Coast managed to grab Mackenzie,Schofield and Mitch Brown.

True, other than Reid though it looks like WCE & Melbourne got them all

North were the winners of the draft Lachy Hansen aside, if he was around pick 15 no one would care. Obviously we took him really high, but counter that with getting Thomas and Goldstein as steals and it's counterbalanced into a really nice draft by North.

Collingwoods draft picks for 2006
Ben Reid pick 8
Nathan Brown pick 10
Chris Dawes pick 28 traded to Melb for pick 20 - Tim Broomhead
Brad Dick pick 44 at West coast
Tyson Goldsack pick 63

Preseason
Chris Bryan pick 8 delisted

Rookie
Sharrod Wellingham pick 10 traded to West coast for pick 17 - Brody Grundy
Brent Maccaffer pick 26
Marty Clarke pick 40

Only Chris bryan not playing AFL anymore is a great draft.

Boak, gray, Westhoff and Stewart are a better bunch imo.

Gray struggles to get on the park Lindsay Thomas much better, Westoff comparable to Lachy Hansen, Westhoff probably had better career but I feel like they're both about the same player right now, Stewart I rate as a decent player but gets dropped and is in and out of the team, which leaves Goldstein and Boak. I think if you went around the competition and asked teams if they'd rather have a star ruckmen or a star midfielder they'd say a ruckmen, they're much harder to find and take way longer to develop.

Essendon lost then...and lost badly...Gumby and Jetta on very thin ice....leaving only Davey who's on slightly, just slightly, thicker ice. But Hislop, Reimers and Houli all gone from our 6 picks in the top 50.
