Rioli is the second best small forward behind Betts.

Cotchin isn't close to the best midfielder in the league. So how's he much better?
Since when do elite small forwards have comparable value to great midfielders? Cotchin would be drafted first as the more valuable player.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Emma Quayle's book, The Draft. In-depth look at the lead-up to the 2007 draft including insight into how Hawthorn approached the draft that season and a discussion of a number of the players mentioned in this thread.

Per basic economic theory value is driven by to scarcity of resources; so therefore Cyril (as an elite small forward) is more valuable then Cotchin (a great midfielder).

Yeah, but that comes down to supply and DEMAND.

There is simply a lot more demand for quality mids. While most clubs (not all) would like an elite small forward, ALL clubs would want multiple high quality midfielders.

In an era since Collingwood 2010 where forward pressure has been pivotal to a team's success one could argue all clubs would demand an elite small forward also.

Hawthorn '12-'16 had Cyril and a couple of very good ones in Bruest and Poupolo

Cotchin cops a lot of disrespect here. One good season... really. Been a gun since he started and had a couple of average years due mainly to poor coaching and people say he is just an average footballer. Has been tagged for years, him or Delidio, and taggers are given way to much leeway their way.

Only on bigfooty would Cyril Rioli be considered a better footballer than Cotchin.

Rioli has been great, but please. Rioli would not even make the top 5 of this draft due to his inability to grow into a midfielder.

Very one dimensional footballer

Completely delusional.

1. Rance
2. Dangerfield
3. Cotchin
4. Harry Taylor
5. Taylor Walker
Yet he performs when the pressure is on and has 4 premiership medals

Cotchin is yet to be sighted in a final

In the first final he was good against Carlton.
Second final against Port the entire side was blown out of the water 10 minutes in.
Third final he copped a heavy tag against North and was quiet.... therefore he's no good. He has stood up time and time again.. but yup, a couple of average finals and he's just meat and potatoes.

not meat and potatoes, but not better than Rioli, who is anything but one dimensional

But would they use a top 5/top 10 pick on one though, or use a later pick, or try a different type of player in the role (eg. Puopolo was a defender before being drafted)?

He is a one dimensional footballer that can only play as a small forward . Cannot play as a midfielder cannot play as a defender . Cotchin is a genuine midfielder who can play most positions on the ground . A brow low medalist and a leader .

Not even his Brownlow
And I don't know if I've ever seen Cotchin play forward but I've certainly seen Cyril through the middle.

I don't think Kreuzer has become nearly the player he was expected to be. He's solid but he was being heralded as the next Paul Salmon pre-draft

Injuries did cut him down a bit bit another 4-5 seasons around this years level will see his rating lift quite high. Especially if he is part of any success.

injuries. has played 10+ games in a season 3 times in his career.
Plus was played out of position early. big inside mid - spent a lot of early days off HBF.

On current form hope the Bombers haven't signed him up for longer than this season.

Unfortunately looks like the game has passed him by.
