Was just looking at the carltonfc.com webpage, and in particular the club's leading goalkickers for 2006. There were 60 goals or so separating Fev with the next goal kicker in Betts. Then we had Waite, Whitnall and Kouta topping off the top 5.

This is appauling and must improve this year if we are to move ahead with our development.

We cannot rely solely on Fevola to win our games and to keep our score within competition of other teams. It is not good enough. Our forward line really needs structure badly, based on teh two NAB cup games - we are still Fev orientated.

My questions are
1. where are our goals going to come from this year
2. will it be a closer margain this year, and will more players kick 20 or so goals?

I bloody hope so :)

Would be closer this year, I would think. Remember, last year our second and third avenues to goal were out for quite a long time.

I expect:
Fev: 70+
Kennedy: 15-25
Whitnall: 30
Fisher: 20
Betts: 20

What you say is very true & is still cause for concern. It is why Waite must play at CHB so Lance can play forward all season. Lance kicked 15 goals last season yet played the majority of the season at CHB. In 2005 he kicked 24 goals (including 4 against Essendon, 5 against Sydney & 4 against Brisbane), yet moved to defence in the second half of the season. If Lance is able to play all 22 games up forward he will kick 35-40 goals, taking a lot of the pressure off Fev.

Fisher. About time he stood up and gave us a 35-40 goal season (if not injured)

I'd have Fisher slightly lower than that, and say about 30 goals for the year. If Lance can do roughly the same, then there certainly wont be the reliance on Fev to kick to majority of our goals.

I think that Whitnall being played more in the forward line this year will provide more goals. Kennedy will also provide some goals. Although I expect the maturing midfield unit to have more of a say in the goal tally for the year. Players like Simpson, Murph, n Stevens to name a few will be kicking more goals as the midfield begins to command more of the play.

Yeah, I definately think Murph could well kick around 20 goals this year. Simpson and Stevens both also look like goal kicking midfielder types although they are both currently way to innaccurate for my liking. If the coaches work with them on their accuracy they could probably also both kick around 20 goals.

Hopefully the coaching staff are instructing player that if they run inside 50 and have a reasonable shot at goal they should go for it. It really irritates me, (last week in particular), how are players had a clear shot at goal but would opt to stuff around with handballs until they no longer had a shot.

I agree mate:) . Kicking it to Fev too much will not move us forward. The problem is our other forwards are not nailing their chances. Especially in the Bombers game. Our ball carriers then go back to kicking to Fev when they see the misses. Vicious cycle.

We really need to make those defenders who zone off to help out with Fev more accountable by spotting up our players who should be free. They then need to nail their shots. At the same time this should help Fev as they well then have to respect their own opponent rather than helpout. It must be dispiriting at times for our other forwards when their leads aren't honoured.

As has been mentioned the mids really need to get forward and kick a few as well.

We'll just see how it pans out once the proper stuff gets underway
I'm really looking forward to this season:thumbsu: Not because I think we will win a lot of games, but just to see how these kids come on:)

We need more goals from our midfielders

Absolutely BG. i Think gilly said in a previous post that we rely too much on kick-mark goals, instead of running goals from our mids.

Let's hope our mids can really stand up and add some pressure to the scoreboard.

Looking forward to this dance thing that Gibbs has planned after his first goal. :p

Hey, i hope you don't mind me posting here. Was just reading the thread and thought id throw in my 5c.
Personally i dont think your leading scorer having a big gap over the rest of the team is too much of a worry as long as its not a riduclous amount. Youd need to improve on last year obviously but your full forward having say 20-30 goal lead on the rest is much of a worry. as long as the midfield gets the ball to Fev he will take care of your goal scoring. He's a star as long as he's got his head screwed on. some input from the rest of the team obviously won't go astray.
I can see Carlton around middle of the bottom 8 this year and then start making a steady climb over the next couple of years. especially with your off field woes seemingly starting to sort themselves out, you can finally start concentrating on winning some games.
Keep your chins up. i dont think it will be long before we see the BIG 4 battling it out in the Finals like the good ol' days!

we should try and look at it as which positions will score the goals rahter than which players

IMO this is what we need to be targeting and achieving for 2007

FP = 1
FF = 4
FP = 2
HFF = 2
CHF = 2
HFF = 1
ruck = 1
mids = 4
resting ruck = 1
bench = 2

Did you guys ever look at the ratio to Fev stats last year. Sure he is a gun. But when you go to one player 75 percent of the time, he should be the leading goal kicker. With greater midfield(yes midfield) depth, we will bring other forwards into play by the ball being used better through the midfield. The speed with which we can punch, and counter punch out of defence determins the quality of the ball coming into the forward line.

Fev, Clokey, Eddie, JK, Whitnall, Fish etc.

Murph, Scotty, BeeGee, Stevo, Carrotts, Walks etc. Clubs will have alot more to focus on in season 2007.

Not just shutting down Stevo and Fev. And don't we BLOODY love it!

Good post AWG, I've been saying this since half way through last year. Our forward line is in deep trouble. People have been raving on about it as if it was our best asset yet clearly it is in deep trouble. Fev, Fish, Waite, Kennedy were all the talk. Now we are seeing people caling for fish to be put in the magoos ( I agree) and Waite has finally been moved back, and Kennedy, although not under performing at all, is not living up to the huge expectations placed on him and the others in the forward line.

Our backline was put under the pump so severely last season due to complete failures in the forward line, it was like the back half were kicking against a wall, it just came straight back every time. No wonder people were blaming them.

There have been glimpses of greatness with Fev and whitnall playing together up forward, but also complete failures.

So where to ? It needs to be looked at urgently or we are in trouble.

Ackland and Cloak have done well, Whitnal has not.

I would like to see Wiggins play his role from the west Coast Eagles game, Edwards, and Gibbs given a run delivering the ball into the forward line. Hartlett should also be given a shot.

The most important thing has been said, our mids need to put in.

handy when your ruckman can go down forward and kick goals brings back memories of justin madden when he did that occasionaly send clike downf orward even if we had ackland not all the time just every now and then not needed if were too far in front in last quarter ;)
